The staff are fluent in Japanese, which makes you feel at ease. Breakfast is served in the open air, with a view of the pool. The taste is also delicious and familiar to Japanese people. Apparently light noodles are the norm for breakfast in Cambodia.
The fridge in the room is a mini fridge, so the freezer is small and not very tall. However, you can make ice.

Good location just outside the busy area, so it's nice and quiet but still within walking distance of most places. The rooms are decent for the price. Comfortable mattresses and pillows. A nice breakfast includes fresh fruit, eggs, and baguette with jam. The pool is also very nice; surrounded by some trees and greenery. Friendly and helpful staff, round off a good package. Mr Kim and the security guy Teun were particularly helpful.

I was a little concerned about the poor construction, but thanks to the kind owner and staff, I had a comfortable stay. There are restaurants nearby and you can walk to the market. It was a calm inn where you could hear frogs croaking from night to morning.

A little more run down than the photos would suggest but it was clean with a good breakfast, a pool ( much appreciated at the end of a hot day) and nice staff, still good value for what we paid. Maybe worth paying a little extra for the rooms by the pool. Unfortunately the restaurant and bar were not operating when we were there but bought cans of beer for by the pool and good places to eat and drinknearby, not far from pub street but that was a bit bright and busy for our taste, really liked the Khmer Grill for food and Pomme brew pub (own brewed craft beer busy with ex pats) both within a 5 min walk

Really enjoying our stay here, quality for a great price, friendly staff, and lovely cleaners who do a great job. Stunning garden, our room is stunning, and we love it. Great breakfast, prompt service. Very happy. I almost don't want to share because this place is so right for us that we would like to keep it a secret really. No backpackers, lush garden, quiet part of town

Really nice. It was great value and in a very convenient location. Not far from the old market our the main social areas. The staff and the pool are what really make it. They are extremely helpful and the swimming pool is top notch. The breakfast was also really good and set you well up for the Day.

very bad hotel and the boss! the boss (Peter and Virgil) just think of how to make money from you!
at first they gave us a good smile and looked very nice to us. i asked them how much for the tuk tuk for one day tour to Angkor Wat. they said $10. it's the normal price in Siem Reap. you can ask all the tuk tuk drive and they will give you this price. but when i checked out, they said $10 for one person! they never gave me the menu of the price before. and when we checked out, they gave up the menu. everything was much more expensive than outside!! and at first they said they would give us a free dinner by email. when we checked out, they said no dinner then!!! they are not business man. they are cheating customer!! since we could not get the deal with the price, they closed the gate and just wasted our time until we give all the money they wanted! the location is very bad. no tuk tuk will go there. so you can only use their tuk tuk. the road to old market is very bad and not safe! do not go to that hotel!

Response from blue7198, Owner at The Cockatoo Resort & Spa
Responded Mar 17, 2010
The writer of this review unjustly calls us a “very bad hotel” when in fact we could, with absolute justification, call her a “very bad customer.” As one can gather from her review, she seems to be obsessed with money. We should have been forewarned about this by the fact that even before they arrived at the hotel there was an exchange of more than 20 emails between us in which she very insistently haggled about our room rates. We had already given them 20% off our low season rack rates, but she wanted more. When they checked in, the first thing she brought up was again the room rates. And it’s not as if she was bargaining for hundreds or even tens of dollars – it was for just three dollars less per night! But despite all that we went out of our way to be cordial and courteous to her party (she came with two male companions), going to extra lengths to make them comfortable. We gave them travel tips and informed them where to shop for food (they wanted to buy their own beer, snacks, etc.). We told them they may empty the minibars in their rooms and put in their own supplies (we had to say no when she asked if they could cook their own food!). We prepared an Asian-style breakfast just for them, something we had never done before, thinking this might help make them feel more at home. When they booked a sunrise tour we got up at 4am to make sure they left the hotel on time. And, on the very night before they left, we allowed them to use the pool until around midnight and even gave them a free round of beers (what other hotel would do that?). But when it was time to pay the bill, she suddenly became hysterical and abusive. She shouted and yelled, accusing us of cheating, and threatening to write unfavorable reviews that would damage our reputation. It was such an ugly scene that we had to walk away from it. We had never seen anything like it. She questioned everything on the bill, even the one-dollar charge for a tuktuk ride to town. The main bone of contention was our tour charges. She argued that they were higher than the fares she had been told by some tuktuk driver. But, as every traveler knows, hotel prices are never the same as street prices. A tour arranged by a hotel costs more – that’s a basic fact in the tourist industry. A guest cannot expect and demand that a hotel lower its tour rates to equal those bargained on the streets. Neither can a guest insist that the prices of drinks in the room minibar be the same as those in a supermarket! Our tour rates are clearly indicated in our information folder. We did not charge her a penny more than our published rates – in fact, we charged her less. Naturally we told our staff not to let them off the premises until they paid. We hoped she would cool down and regain her senses. But each time she saw us she launched into another tirade. It was only after we, out of sheer exasperation, called the tourist police that she begrudgingly consented to settle the bill.

I had always heard that I should visit Angkor Wat sometime in my lifetime and finally I got the chance. We decided to stay at the Cockatoo but we knew little about it and I did not have a lot of high expectations. We arrived at night and a friendly driver appeared at the airport with my name on a board and he escorted us to the van waiting for our guests. No hassle. After a short drive, the gate was pulled back and we were astounded to see the beautiful hotel. The pool was lit. The lighting around the tropical gardens surrounding our rooms was breathtaking. We were offered a welcome drink on the open veranda and it felt like we were in a really good movie. It was like something out of a dream. For the week we stayed there every detail was arranged meticulously by the gracious staff. We became so attached to our tuk tuk driver who works for the hotel that we all actually cried at the airport when we left. We have traveled to many countries and had so many experiences but the experience of the Cockatoo is really over the top. It's truly the best boutique hotel I have ever stayed at. I loved the rooms by the pool. Also the cottages are perfect for someone wanting to spend a little more time. The open feeling of the resort puts everyone in a relaxed mood. The rooms are large and comfortable. The location is perfect as it is so close to town yet seems to be a world away. The last night the owners prepared a feast that was out of this world. Everything about the resort was perfect. One of my favorite things was looking at the stars at night from the pool. Other "boutique hotels" in the area were noisy and much more cramped with smaller rooms. I can really say it is the nicest place I have stayed at in memory and I can't wait to go again every year and hopefully bring groups of people in the future. It would be perfect for a retreat or special event. Who knew you had family in Cambodia? It's turns out you do at the Cockatoo Resort. Thank you so much!

The Cockatoo is a micro-resort with less than a down rooms which is great for vacation and a quiet escape. The hosts Peter and Virgil was very accommodating and pretty much arranged everything for us including airport transfer and private tour to Angkor Wat. They even hosted dinners for us guests. The resort is near enough to Pub Street and they have their own tuk tuk to drive you to the nearby restaurants. Will definitely come back.

Hi,
I returned to the peace and tranquility of the beautiful town called Siem Reap after having a bad experience in Phnom Penn. I chose to stay with Peter and Virgil of the famed Cockatoo resort.
Cockatoo resort and the owners have had tremendous bad luck with the severe floods of last year and they are just getting to grips after a fire forced temporary closure of the premises.
Well, the place is back on the map and looking as nice as ever. Peter and Virgil offering every kind of assistance to all tourists who visit.
These are ideal premises for those who want a hideaway from the crowds of Siem Reap or the tour groups which seem to be in every mainstream hotel.
I wish these guys every success. I am in bungalow 7, it is very spacious with a great bathroom, comfortable bed, table for laptop tea and coffee facilities and great wi fi. They also have a tuk tuk service to take you the short ride to pub street and all its restaurants, bars and cafes. They also can pick you up from the airport wityh their friendly driver ' Tarzan '
Peter is a professional photographer and does exhibitions of his work at a number of premises in Siem Reap including the National museum. He captures the heart of Cambodia and his works are also for sale.
Virgil is a culinary expert, just ask him for most types of meals in advance and he can deliver. This is a resort where you really feel you are on holiday. They treat you as a friend not as a paying guest!
