We came out as a part of a trip to see Montana and spent 4 great nights. We fly fished, hiked, ride horses. The setting is wonderful and the staff are just exemplary. Tons of knowledge, very personable, always willing to help align activities and options. Great experience all around

Never have I felt so welcomed by the owners, staff and even animals! We stayed in a cabin which was clean, comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. The Ruby River Valley is an extraordinary location near pristine trout streams and large open spaces dotted with deer, bison, elk and pronghorn. We saw a variety of birds, hiked, fished and relaxed. Our fishing guides were outstanding. The family atmosphere at meals encourages meeting new people from around the country. A truly unforgettable experience.

Upper Canyon Outfitters and their remarkable staff never disappoint. From the owners to the fishing guides, wranglers, housekeeping and kitchen staff - each go out of their way to make guests comfortable and feel at home. Despite a week of somewhat tough conditions due to considerable late runoff from the surrounding mountains, our guides did everything possible to get our group onto fish - even if we were going out unguided and on our own. (The rain, spring runoff and high water are completely out of UCO's control, after all.) They did their best from the area's smaller creeks to different sections of the Ruby River. Regardless of skill level, whether it's advanced, beginner or intermediate, you simply need to put ego aside and heed their advice and instruction if you want to get into fish. (Something that's hard for some fly-fishers to do, I'm aware.) The Ruby Valley is their territory, and they know what works. And you may learn a new tactic or two to take to your home water and find more success there as a result. I know I have. In fact, I had what is probably the best fishing day of my life during one outing thanks to Fredy's guidance. Fish count isn't something I use to determine a successful day, but we hooked at least 50 big brown and rainbow trout. We couldn't miss. I'll remember it forever. And I'll also remember the big Montana sky, arid mountains and smell of sage, the pronghorn antelope bounding across the hillsides, eagles flying overhead, bison herds grazing, along with sightings of elk, mule deer and other wildlife under colorful sunsets. Set expectations aside and it's impossible to have a bad day. Our cabin was clean and a great respite after a long day on the water, and the cool evenings led to restful and restorative nights. Morning yoga is an added bonus. Evening happy half-hour and community dinner are a great way to meet the other guests and make new friends from across the country. Thursday night's music in the sunroom is a foot-stomping way to cap the week's stay. Activities such as horseback rides, ATV rides, history tours and more are family-friendly and definitely worth it to break up the week of fishing. They are also perfect options to see the expansive country of the Ruby Valley and understand its storied history. It's a special place made even better if you're able to set expectations aside, take a deep breath, and recognize that you're in one of the most extraordinary places anywhere.

I can’t say enough about how wonderful this place is! We took our three adult daughters on a family vacation to Upper Canyon Outfitters. We were greeted warmly by Jose who showed us to our cabin and then offered to give us a tour of the ranch once we got settled. When we went back for our tour we met one of the owners, Donna. She made sure that we knew the history of the ranch and had an understanding of all they offered. We felt very welcome. Throughout our stay we met all of the four generations that live on the ranch. Every one of their employees were amazing and greeted us and knew of our plans for the day. They couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly. They ranch itself is fantastic, but you can tell that they train their staff well and that makes the entire experience top notch. Thank you so much Donna, Jake, Bill, Bernice, Freddy, Cassie, Eli, and Olli for sharing your home with us! Also a huge shoutout to Izzak, Frank, Timber, Hannah, Cathy, Van, Mike, Karla, Page, Jett, Courtney, and Jose for making our family vacation unforgettable. (I’m sorry, I know I did not catch everyone’s names, but you were all awesome!) You will never regret a trip to Tate’s Upper Canyon.

I've stayed at this outfitters several times over the years and I was less than pleased this past visit. Our cabin had no power when we arrived so we had to track down the owner to get it turned on. The bunkhouse we were set up in had dirty floors and the refrigerator was full with leftovers from the previous guests. The food served was just okay. The Wednesday evening meal was reconstructed two days later. It was an okay meal, just not twice within 2 days. The one thing that disturbed me the most and caused me to be uncomfortable was the way the owner interacted with one of the younger employees. During dinner service he asked her to scratch his back and then told her he was going to scratch her back, which he did in front of all the guests, around 17 of us. I felt this was very inappropriate. I did, however, enjoy the activities I participated in which was hosted by an outside person. I will not be returning to this ranch.

Kathy We appreciate your feedback and will take it into account. The food left in the conference room is actually left over food for staff to eat, but we will be sure to clear it out for future quilting trips. We will be sure to share your feedback on meals with our chef. Your cabin's power was off as we did not have guests for a number of days before you arrival, that was an oversight on our part. As for Jake asking an employee to scratch his back, that was his granddaughter, as we are a family run business. We understand how this could be viewed for future guests so that was valuable feedback. After hosting 45 visits (20 years) of positively received quilting retreats it is unfortunate that you did not have a good experience on this last retreat. As the fourth generation preparing to take over this family business, it is misunderstandings like this that make running a business very difficult. While we would have preferred a conversation in person that would have allowed for a reparative experience, we understand that this more public form of feedback such as this is often easier. We are sorry to hear that you will not be returning as we like to maintain our local guests, but we do understand. Cassie

Donna, Jake, and all the staff were very friendly and accomodating. They went to great lengths to make my whole family feel welcome. The area is absolutely beautiful. Cory was the best guide anyone could ask for. The food was delicious. I would highly recommend UCO to anyone and am looking forward to returning.

My husband and I were so impressed how Donna and her staff spoiled us. From the moment we arrived, they made us part of their family. Our guides, Frank, Freddy, and JD respected our fly fishing skills and patiently taught us even more! The staff were friendly, the food was outstanding, and the entire trip was an experience of a lifetime. We are already talking about going back in 2022!
