Hotel's Favorite
This might be my favorite hotel experience to date. Amantaka created a genuinely special space, making us feel like truly valued guests.
The property is located in the heart of the city so it’s easy to see the sights and catch dinner reservations. The hotel has a complimentary tuk tuk, which makes things even easier.
Our suite came with all kinds of perks, including 2 free meals and a complimentary airport transfer (I hate when super expensive hotels charge you for pickup— it seems petty, lol). Amantaka also had the coolest amenity that we’ve ever seen: FREE LAUNDRY! It’s so pragmatic and thoughtful, especially since we’d been traveling for weeks before we arrived to Laos.
We took a sunset cruise on the Amantaka boat, which we highly recommend. It comes with snacks and we ordered some wine from the hotel. Amantaka staffed the whole thing with professionalism. Very fun and very beautiful.
On my husband’s birthday, we ended up going out for dinner instead of staying at the hotel. The Amantaka kitchen actually stayed open late to sing him happy birthday and bring him a dessert upon our return. It was so sweet and considerate. We would never ask anyone to do such a thing, but the fact they went above and beyond was extremely touching.
This is a true 5 star experience. We can’t thank them enough for showing us the beauty of Luang Prabang.

We had a perfect stay at Amantaka in October. The general manager, Tom, and his staff were amazing. They suggested and arranged all of our activities and made them all magical experiences. We did a private sunset cruise with Sanh, our private waiter, a private tour of Luang Prabang and its temples with the most knowledgable personable guide, an excursion to waterfalls with stops at local villages and school, a private Baci ceremony, alms offering and a couples massage. Things were arranged and timed so we weren't with crowds and felt like we had temples and waterfalls to ourselves and also had some real spiritual experiences.
As for food - normally in addition to eating at a resort we like to experience other restaurants in the area. However, because the food and service were so fabulous, we ate at Amantaka every night and had the rotating Laos tasting menu. They did an amazing job catering to my husbands gluten allergy as well - for example one afternoon they came and asked us our plans for the evening because if we were going to be eating there, the chef was going to start preparing some special gluten free items for my husband.
Finally, we were also blown away by how they tended to our beautiful room (with a lovely pool, which they had upgraded us to). Every time we left the room, if only for 5 minutes, we would return to have things refreshed. However, we never once saw the housekeeping staff. We would joke that they were like magical elves.
This was our first stay at an Aman...and now we have booked Amandari, Amankila and Amansara!

I just returned from a full week at Amantaka. Even by the high standards of Aman, it is a gem, reflecting the gracious hospitality and friendliness of the Lao people, and the unspoiled authenticity of Luang Prabang. It is wrong to treat Luang Prabang as an add-on to a trip focusing on Thailand and/or Cambodia. Make it your main destination and go now, before it is discovered by the tourist hordes. Spend enough time to immerse yourself in its unique and quietly compelling culture. You can have no better guides to that culture than your temporary Amantaka family.
Amantaka, as a converted French colonial hospital, feels completely authentic. Its conversion to a hotel injected a bit of Aman’s zen-like simplicity, foregoing the conventional SE Asian hotel decorative scheme for a museum quality collection of 150 black and white photos of Luang Prabang monastic life by the superb Swiss photographer Hans Georg Berger. As is the case with so many Amans, the secret sauce is the people – in this case 60% of whom returned following the long COVID closure, and 40% of whom are new. The new GM has come down from Amankora and was an inspired choice, a Bhutanese deeply understanding and respectful of his Lao colleagues and their culture, and leading by example – a strong presence attentive to every aspect of each guest’s experience, rather like the quietly genial host of a weekend house party. The team is tremendously motivated and joyful, which in turn makes it a joy to be around them.
The culinary team is lead by an exceptionally talented and congenial South African who comes to Lao by way of Australia and a number of other first class properties. When I indicated little interest in ordering from the menu, suggesting that he knew far better than I which ingredients held most promise and which recipes were most exciting – he produced a string of hits over the course of the week, both Laotian and western, including superb smoked fish and dragon fruit ceviche, Laotian fish and mushroom soups, and even his mother’s supremely comforting chicken salad sandwich. The restaurant manager was a consummate host and inspiring captain for his young staff. The spa welcoming, unfussy, warm and talented. Housekeeping perfect – invisible, with worn clothing laundered and returned with astonishing speed. Outside guides and activities were well chosen and supervised.
If you are an Aman fan who somehow missed Luang Prabang, you will fall in love with the brand anew. If you are an Aman novice, I can’t think of a better place to be introduced to the magic.

Amantaka is one of those rare hotels that actually looks far better in person than it does in photos - a beautiful little French colonial style retreat in the perfect location in Luang Prabang. It is really immaculate, and looks especially impressive in the evenings, when the hotel fills the peaceful garden with lanterns. Everything about the hotel is top notch: beautiful rooms, excellent food, and extremely friendly and attentive staff. I was upgraded to a Khan suite (number 8), and I really couldn't ask for anything more: extremely spacious, and beautifully appointed.
My complaints are fairly minor: above all, it would be nice if the pool was heated a few degrees warmer (and the private pools as well), and I felt the pricing for some of the activities was too high (although the room rate I think was justified given how great the hotel is). It was a bit unnecessary to charge a service fee for doing something as straightforward as booking me a train ticket - I would really expect that for free as part of normal concierge service provided by a top tier hotel. But these are small points relative to an overall fantastic experience. I'll absolutely be back. I particularly recommend doing the trip to the Kuang Si Falls and visiting the nearby elephant sanctuary, which was the highlight of my stay.

We stayed in Amantaka for 2 days. Thanks to Tom and the whole team for their great hospitality. The hotel is stunning, in center of town but so peaceful inside. We had a wonderful time using the pool, bikes, tuk tuk, spa and a guided tour to the waterfall. The dinner set up with lighting around the pool is just magic.

We have stayed at a few Aman resorts but this one is the best - perfect. It cannot be faulted, the setting, the attention to detail, the service, food and a host of other things about which other reviewers have commented. Thank you Tom, Brendan and all the staff for an unbeatable 4 days.

My partner and I had a wonderful time at Amantaka in December this year. The whole city has just bounced back from the pandemic so I had a little expectation when coming to Luang Prabang this year. However, everything at the resort was exceptional, from the moment we were greeted at the airport, to when we were warmly greeted by the members of staff as we arrive at the moment, and when we left the resort.
The property was converted from a historic building but was very well maintained. It has a classic and subtle charm and feels very cosy and intimate. Don't forget to use the Bath House that with a private pool, steamed room and sauna.
Thank you Amantaka team for exceptional hospitality and I will be back again!

It doesn’t get better than Amantaka. Set amongst a series of colonial era buildings surrounding a massive garden, the hotel is perfection. Our suite was impeccable, full of easy style, spotless, and supremely comfortable. The kind of room you take pictures of thinking you should build one back home. The spa - based around a bathhouse with hot and cold soaking tubs, steam room and sauna, was perfection after a long day of exploring. And make sure to explore - not just the UNESCO town but further afield - along the Mekong and spend the day with elephants to name two. The hotel organized activities for each day, and each was flawless and without stress. “No rush,” I heard again and again. The food is also excellent, with tables set around the pool each night and the entire garden lit with candles. Magical. Now, for that staff. From the excellent GM new from Bhutan, on down, they are charming and kind and efficient. It was my birthday over our stay, and I must’ve been wished so by 100 staff. Yes, it is expensive. But if you can afford it, DO. It is one of those rare jewels.

From the check in to our departure, the service, grounds, room and food were among the best we’ve ever had in our travels all around the world.
The room had a private pool, very comfortable 4 poster bed, lots of space and storage, a separate sitting room and every amenity you’d want.
The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating without being fussy or subservient.
Fantastic food for breakfast, lunch and dinner- all of which we had on different days in Luang Prabang.
The grounds just ooze beauty and calm.
And… best of all, it’s in a quiet area but just a short walk from the main streets and markets.
We love the Laotian people and the magic of Luang Prabang.

We spent four days at the Amantaka. It was a wonderful place to unwind. Our room was wonderful and the staff was great. The hotel arranged tours for us. There were not many guests but the Coronovirus scare impacted all the hotels in Asia, I think.
I loved the location. Right in the heart of the town.
