My family and I travelled to Croatia for the first time in August. We booked with Jet2 and as per usual they were excellent. We booked Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik as it had great reviews on both Jet2 and Trip Advisor and the location looked stunning. After a short 30 minute private transfer we arrived at the hotel. The hotel is very modern and the views from reception were simply breathtaking. The staff were great and we were allocated a room on the 8th floor. There were 3 of us and although the room was very nice it was very tight for 3 people. The foldable campbed provided for our daughter wasn't very sturdy or comfortable. We had paid extra for a sea view and in my opinion it is essential - the views really are spectacular. The room was cleaned daily and you are provided with shower gel, shampoo, hairdryer (terrible quality), bathrobes, kettle and coffee. There was also a fully stock 'cooler' with the most expensive drinks I have ever seen in a hotel mini bar !! We booked bed & breakfast and the breakfast is superb. Great selection of food and great staff. The pool area and pool are quite small but beds were readily available up to about 10am - no silly people putting towels down at 6am !! Reserving beds is actively discouraged and the hotel provides towels at the pool bar free of charge. Opposite the hotel is a beach area and the hotel reserves an area for guests with free sunbeds and towels. The surrounding areas are good with plenty of restaurants and bars. The drinks in the hotel are extremely expensive and this is why I gave a 4 star review. €3.80 for a small bottle of water, €4.80 for a Coke and €8.20 for a beer is absolutely ridiculous. The exact same bottle of water in the supermarket 3 minutes away is €0.80 and a beer in any of the local bars is €4.50. Downstairs from 5 till 7 is happy hour with 20% off cocktails but this still left a very sub standard Pina Colada costing €10.
Overall this hotel is excellent and we will definitely return - a better campbed and more reasonably priced drinks would make this review 5 stars.

There is a wow moment when you arrive at the Hotel Kompas - a wonderful view across the bay from both the reception area and the adjacent bar. We had a comfortable sea view room on the top floor and I would recommend the extra cost to benefit from both the quality of the room but also the superb views.
Prices within the hotel and in nearby restaurants/bars are high - we were glad that we'd booked half board as we felt that over the week long holiday we had definitely saved money. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. The evening meal was ok but a bit lacking in choice for main courses. The soups and desserts were great. I think the hotel could improve it's greeting to guests who arrive at the Sphere restaurant for the first time - we didn't quite know the system and various members of staff looked confused when we asked what we should do and where we could sit etc.
The pool area is relatively small for the size of the hotel. So guests reserving beds with towels/books etc when not using them causes a big problem. We saw many instances of guests reserving beds early and then disappearing for a leisurely breakfast or stroll and then returning later to their prime location round the pool. We saw quite a few guests struggling to find anywhere to seat themselves near the pool. The hotel seems to think that posting a notice at the entrance to the pool area is all that is needed to resolve the problem but this is a useless way forward if the hotel never takes any action. We saw many examples of bed reserving but nil action from the hotel. Quite simply where sun beds are concerned - use it or lose it in my view. On one occasion we decided to mention the issue to the attendant and we pointed out the unoccupied reserved beds. He seemed completely uninterested and continued to just sit on his stool in the shade and gave the impression that it had nothing to do with him. He literally just shrugged his shoulders!
Previous writers have commented on the decline of the beach area in front of the hotel. We found this area to be very disappointing - it is in decline and not looked after. Close to the hotel are a few very average looking bars and restaurants and nothing in the way of interesting shops/boutiques etc. We recognise that this is not the hotel's fault but the decline of this area reflects badly on the hotel.
Overall this hotel has some very good points but the main reason we wouldn't consider returning is the run down nature of the surrounding area.

Returned from a week’s holiday booked via Tui. Absolutely beautiful hotel, perfect location right on Sunset Beach (pebble) where hotel has free lounger/towels so was perfect to cool off in the sea after the heat of the Old Town. August (34/36 degrees most days) 27/29degrees in evenings. VERY HOT but hotel has plentiful aircon to cool down.
The Kompass sits on promenade where 5/10min walk in either direction you have many restaurants/small bars so plenty of choice to eat. We did eat at the hotel twice one lunch/one dinner and both very nice. Some people did take Half Board option but didn’t see what they ate. Breakfast buffet was plentiful salads/cold cuts/croissants&muffins/breads&toasts/porridge&cereals/weird yoghurts! & chia puddings/hot cooked breakfast (english brekkie) so literally something for everyone.
Staff and very helpful, hotel spotlessly clean.
Rooms very comfortable, my only grump would be the pillows two too high, one too flat and bit squishy/lumpy but didnt stop me sleeping soundly. Quiet aircon in rooms. We had two deluxe sea view rooms and were to side of hotel on floor 9 but perfect views, often too hot to sir outside mind!
Rooms have a fabulous selection of shampoo/conditioner/showergel/handwash/body cream so you don’t really need to bring your own. I have curly hair and the shampoo/conditioner was paraben free 97% natural so perfect even for me!! which is rare with normal harsh shampoos hotel
provides! Tows plentiful and changed each day/evening too if needed.
Didnt use the pool as sea was like bath water but looked nice. Never seemed to be free beds there though, but down by sea we always had a free hotel bed (and umbrella!)
Uber to old town was ÂŁ8-16 depending on time of day and so worth it compared having to walk/queue in blazing sun for a local bus. ÂŁ20 uber to top of Mount Srd. We did pay for the cable car one night ÂŁ120 for 4 of us - absolute waste of money! Just taxi up.

This was our 4th visit to Dubrovnik, after staying just outside the old town 3 previous times we decided to stay in Lapad, an area we have visited for a day on previous trips.
We booked through Jet2 holidays for a 3 night stay in a deluxe double with sea view and balcony. On arrival are rooms weren't ready but the staff stored our cases so we could have a look around. The hotel was immaculate with very tasteful decor and the most amazing views of the bay from panoramic windows in the reception area. We were told the room would be ready for 2pm and true to their word it was. We stayed in room 912 on the 9th floor, the room was immaculately clean and welcoming with a fully stocked bathroom. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand wash and hand cream as well as the usual slippers and bathrobes(which, to be honest looked grubby!)
The beds were 2 singles put together but we're very comfortable. There was plenty of storage space and a safe and tea & coffee facilities. The fully stocked mini bar looked impressive but on looking at the extortionate prices we left it well alone!! Not even complimentary water, which after a long journey would of been welcomed!
The Best feature of our room was our view, this was to die for. The most stunning view of the the whole bay and out to sea, and was the perfect setting to watch the sunset.
We stayed B&B and only went for breakfast on our 1st morning as it wasn't to our taste. The bacon was pure fat and very greasy, the sausages were like hotdogs and omelette were very greasy! There was plenty of fresh fruit and juices, but the pastries were tiny! My husband enjoyed the coffee but the tea I received was absolutely awful! Luke warm water and tea that just didn't brew.
The pool area was lovely and clean with fresh towels available to use and lots of sunbeds. We didn't use any of the bars as the prices were ridiculously high! On offer as cocktail of the week was Gorgans gin & tonic for €9! How is that justified. Other cocktails were priced up to €18.5 and local beer €8 a bottle! The hotel had no evening entertainment on for the whole of our stay which was disappointing as the actual area of Lapad was deadly quiet with most bars and restaurants being empty which was a shame as on previous visits it's been quiet bustling area. The local restaurants have increased their prices quiet considerably since our previous visit for both food & drinks. The beach area was all closed down so no sunloungers or beach bar/restaurant. Overall, we had a nice time, visited Gruz, the old town and surrounding area of Lapad. Unfortunately, we will not be returning as we feel that the change to the Euro has killed Dubrovnik, which is a shame. We have lovely memories of Dubrovnik to remember forever. On a 3 night stay without paying to visit tourist attractions as we've already done them we spent over £1000 on food and drink which wasn't at the most expensive restaurants & bars!!!
Tip - Go to Tommy Supermarket for your snacks & drinks, just a short work from the hotel.

From the point of arrival to our departure, nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff at this hotel. The location is stunning, only 20 mins from Old Town by bus and the views from the 10th floor reception and the Sphere Bar we never tired of seeing. The welcome we received was warm and upon checking in our luggage was transported to our room, unlike other hotels where weve had to drag it across a huge complex ourselves. Our room was spacious enough, clean and a bright modern, designer feel to it. Again we were glad we got a room with a sea view and we often sat on the balcony with a pre-dinner drink before going out. The housekeeping staff were excellent, always coming whilst we were out and changing the towels twice a day and the complimentary daily chocolates were a nice touch. Food in the restaurant was excellent, buffet style but with a good choice each night and we were offered a la carte when there were not enough guests to warrant the buffett. Drinks prices were reasonable and comparable to outside prices. We were half board and If we ate out at night we only had to let them know and we could switch and have lunch instead. We used the spa and had an excellent massage. Only criticism was the spa pool was very cold and the steam room not very hot, but we swam in the sea most days anyway. All in a great stay and would definately recommend this hotel.

Pros: the hotel is spotlessly clean, modern and contemporary and the staff are nice. The hotel bar on the 10th floor is a real selling point as you can watch the sunset on an evening with a lovely drink overlooking Lapad beach. The location is fab as it’s in Lapad which is a 10 min Uber journey (€6) from Dubrovnik but Lapad itself has good restaurants and is quieter than Dubrovnik with a beautiful beach and cave bar nearby. We told the staff it was our anniversary before visiting and when we arrived at our room, we had a lovely written letter and bottle of Prosecco. The pool is an infinity style, again, overlooking the beautiful Lapad beach and there are plenty of sun beds meaning you don’t have to fight for a bed and 1 beach towel is provided on each bed to deter people from using their own towels to reserve beds. You can collect fresh hotel beach towels from a basket near the pool as often as you wish. There is also an ATM machine on the hotel complex and a small gym which has air-con and enough machines / free weights to facilitate a good holiday workout.

Cons: the only con we had was the breakfast selection. The bread was tiny and stale slices - there were baguettes as well which you could slice but for normal toast the only option was the small stale slices. There was yoghurt but it was all very runny and tasteless - no thick Greek style / natural yoghurt like you usually get at hotel breakfasts. There were some tiny mini pancakes but it would have been better if there was a chef on hand making fresh pancakes of normal size. There were no good vegetarian options either - I.e. no veggie sausages or meat alternative, only beans or egg available. However, the service was great with staff on hand to fill up coffees and clear plates attentively.

Overall, we had an amazing stay at Hotel Kompas and would stay again. We’d only hope that if we were to revisit, the breakfast might have improved.

If you are reading this review, thinking of booking a holiday at Hotel Kompas, then stop reading and book NOW!! This place is absolutely stunning. If I could give it six stars out of five then I would.

The check in was simple, easy and quick which was great as our flight had been delayed. Our room was amazing with a stunning view of the bay. You have to pay extra for a sea view but we would highly recommend this. Our room has everything you’d need including a minbar and was serviced every day. You also get a visit each evening with a delivery of chocolates and clean towels if you need them. This was a really nice touch.

We stayed bed and breakfast. The breakfast was fantastic. Served from 6:30-10:30am there is a choice of hot food, cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurts and an endless supply of tea and coffee. You never have to wait to be seated and the service is fantastic.

The pool area is great. There are plenty of sun beds and towels are provided. They do frown on reserving sun beds and will remove towels if you do this. We usually got down about 8:30am but there were often beds available later than that. Food and drinks are served around the pool. Take a water bottle and they will fill it up with water and ice for free as often as you want.

We chose to eat out each night. Within five minutes walk of the hotel there are 15-20 restaurants catering for all your needs. Our top choices were Pull Over, Mamma Mia and Tuttobenne. The Green Garden down by the harbour is about 15 minutes away but well worth a visit. The pizza restaurants do takeaways which we chose one evening. There are also a few good bars with loads of cocktails that have large screens if you want to watch any sports. The Tommy supermarket is about 5 minutes walk away too and has a brilliant little bakery which is really cheap.

There is a bus stop to Dubrovnik about 10 minutes walk away and the journey into Dubrovnik is only around 10 minutes and very straightforward. It’s about £1.50 each way.

The hotel is in a stunning location. It’s immaculately clean and all of the staff are helpful and really friendly. It’s relaxing and quiet and the perfect location for a stunning holiday.

It is impossible to fault this amazing hotel. We arrived at midnight after a lengthy flight delay, so we didn't see the amazing view from the reception area until the next day. We had booked five days earlier through Jet 2, so having booked last minute, at a very reasonable price, we obviously didn't expect to have the best room in the hotel!
I was actually blown away by the size of our 'classic' room (722) as it was far larger than I'd imagined. It didn't have a sea view (we knew this already), but it didn't bother us at all.
What did matter was how clean the hotel was, how amazingly courteous and helpful the staff were, and the facilities, all of which were top-notch. We only had breakfast here, but that was great too, and the outdoor seating area was a wonderful place to start your day.
We didn't use the Zenith Bar on the top floor, but it did look amazing and was obviously popular.
Our room was cleaned impeccably every day, and we loved the chocolates that were there by your bed when you returned in the evening - they were delicious! The products in the bathroom were amazing too.
We didn't use the spa or wellness facilities but spent time on the sunbathing terrace next to the pool, which has fabulous views across the bay. We enjoyed the choice of cocktails and food up there and were able to find a sunbed each day without the need to arrive there very early.
This was our first visit to Lapad, and it really is the perfect location to chill out, but with easy access to all that Dubrovnik old town has to offer. Tip: Try to arrive at the walls for 8am if you want to escape the hordes of cruise ship passengers (and the heat!)
We ate at some great restaurants, our favourites being Bacchus Bistro and El Pulpo fish bar. I'd done some online research before we arrived, and there are lots of very good restaurants to choose from. It is worth booking in advance as it was busy. A thoroughly enjoyable break in a beautiful hotel. Highly recommended, and we would definitely return.

We chose this hotel because it was removed from the crowds around old town Dubrovnik, had glowing reviews, and was a little less expensive than the other hotels in the Adriatic Luxury Hotel Collection Brand. I think we got what we paid for.

We were in Dubrovnik to explore the region - using our time to learn about history and culture. A lot of people were simply at this hotel as a beach break. The only downside of this is that the beach and pool chairs are taken first thing in the morning. If you came back from a tour and wanted to take a dip in the water, chairs are limited. We would grab towels and head to the beach a short walk from the hotel (it was almost 100 degrees F when we were there and we couldn't make the walk to the hotel beach chairs).

We booked two rooms: Premium room and Executive Suite. Both of our rooms were large with a nice view. The sitting area in the Executive Suite was worth the small price difference.

Housekeeping did a decent job, some days crumbs weren't vacuumed and dirty dishes weren't removed...but overall we were satisfied and appreciated the nightly turn down towel refresh and chocolates.

Breakfast was decent for a buffet. One the days we were there when it opened, the buffet was stocked. On the days we slept in, and experienced crowds, the guest were frantically getting food, leaving the buffet empty and the staff overwhelmed.

Dinner had a nice buffet and we also enjoyed ordering from the menu.

The hotel staff were all friendly and attentive. We had a shower head issue in one room and they immediately fixed it.

There are many restaurants and markets nearby. It was easy getting an Uber to pick us up at the main entrance.

From an American perspective, this hotel would be considered a mid-tier brand....along the lines of a JW Marriott and not a Ritz Carlton. If you keep this perspective, your expectations will be met.

Hotel Kompas is easy reachable from the Airport with taxi or uber. We chose the uber option which as around EUR 30 in each direction. Upon our arrival, check-in was quick and efficient and our room was located on the 8th floor. The hotel interior is modern and the rooms are relatively large featuring modern interior, a large bathroom and also a very decently sized balcony. Rooms also had coffee and tea making facilities and a safe deposit box as well as bathroom amenities including slippers and bathrobes. The room was also very clean.

Our booked room-rate came with breakfast which was served in the restaurant located on the ground floor with the option to also sit outside on the terrasse with views of the beach and the promenade. The breakfast was buffet style with warm (full English), fruit and continental options. The food was fresh and of good quality with staff being always attentive.

The hotel is located in Lapad with easy access to sunset beach and the Lapad promenade also featuring many food options. The main touristic sites of Dubrovnik are located in the Pile area which is reachable with bus number 6. The bus station is located at the Post office in Lapad – unfortunately it is a popular route and can get very busy. Alternatively, bus number 5 (towards Palace Hotel) can also be used.

Yes. There’s an entrance just in between the restaurant and the bar which takes you down a corridor to the lifts. You can access the restaurant from the seafront - that may be what you mean by walkway.
