The Crooked River Lodge garners high marks for its impeccably clean accommodations and well-kept grounds, alongside a treasure trove of amenities like kayaks and pools despite occasional letdowns with the hot tubs. Guests rave about the friendly service and the serene, scenic location that's close to local attractions, though some note construction nuisances. While the rooms are lauded for their cleanliness, comfort, and views, the value proposition is questioned by many who cite steep pricing and unexpected fees. The lodge's rustic charm and cozy atmosphere are consistently celebrated by visitors.

We enjoy this hotel because it was on the river. We take our boat and this makes it easy to launch at the nearby sites. They were very helpful getting us downtown reservations and recommending the best viewing locations for the fireworks for the 4th.

My husband and I found this gem online, and will definitely return! The Stafford name is well known in Northern Michigan - and they are a vanguard of hospitality in the area. We especially enjoyed our full breakfast that was included with our room. During this Covid-19 era, the food was served "cafeteria style" with the staff being very careful of cleanliness. We ate outside on a beautiful patio overlooking the river. All rooms have a private balcony situated so you could not see your "neighbor". The beds were very comfortable, and the room was large. Appreciated the refrigerator too. The kayaks (and life jackets) were an unexpected perk as they were also included at no charge to explore the Crooked River. And there is a beautiful walking trail on property. The staff was very conscious of cleanliness! We would definitely visit again. Any season of the year.

The Crooked River Lodge is a hidden gem. Located in the tiny town of Alanson, between Petoskey and Mackinaw City, this hotel has everything you need for an amazing up north getaway!

Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend or an active getaway, this property has so much to offer! There is also a nature trail for hiking the property, kayaks, paddleboat and rowboat for use on the Crooked River right out the back of the property. A huge patio has tables/chairs, gas grills for guests to use and the most amazing fire pit with huge Adirondack chairs to enjoy day or night.

Indoors, there is a lovely fireplace with couches to relax by, an awesome game room with pool table, couches, games and books. And then there is the indoor pool and hot tub, which even has special "adults only" hours, which is perfect for those wanting a more quiet and relaxing experience. The daily breakfasts are wonderful - better than most hotel continental breakfasts. The staff is friendly and helpful, making themselves available for whatever guests may need without being obtrusive.

The location of the lodge is ideal, only a short drive from Petoskey, Harbor Springs or Charlevoix to the south, and Mackinaw City to the north. Just be aware that there is not much in the town of Alanson and few restaurants near by, so plan accordingly.

The only down side we have experienced with this hotel is that the furnishings and decor are a little dated - room carpet, mattresses and furniture have a few years on them. But that aside, you won't regret staying at the Crooked River Lodge; we have been repeat guests over the last 8 years and this has become one of our favorite places to visit.

Came up north with some friends for downhill and XC skiing. True ski lodge ambiance. Very clean, attentive staff and nice hot breakfast each day. Always some type of egg dish with either sausage or bacon - vareis by the day. Great apres ski spot on the mezzanine level and a firepit out the back door overlooking the river.
Especially liked the staff brushing off the snow from all the cars in the parking lot - just turn the key and go.

The staff are great! The hotel was clean and the grounds are beautiful. Plenty of amenities (indoor swimming pool, paddleboat, kayaks, board games, pool table, etc.) included with stay. Loved sitting by the fire pit in the evenings. The kids had fun feeding the fishies in the pond even though the water was dirty and hard to see. Everyone adhered to COVID guidelines and the staff even served us complimentary breakfast.

This is the second year in a row that we have stayed here. I would recommend this location to others. I really liked their cleaning process which was explained to me over the phone. I am one of those individual who believe COVID is real and we need to take precautions. Unfortunately, not everyone believes the same thing. The property is nice. Rooms are comfortable. All rooms overlook the river. There is a breakfast buffet where the staff serve the guests. My only compliant were some of the guests not social distancing and that the guests had to use the toaster to toast their own bread. I feel that the staff should be the only one to use the toaster. Most, but not all, of the guests wore masks as requested in the common areas. Pool has number restrictions, so you had to sign up to go, which I thought was a great idea. There are kayaks for use. Try and get on the third floor because you can hear the people above you walking. I little annoying at 6 am.

The first thing I’d say is how beautiful is this lodge. Upon my entrance, I could see the stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and numerous Christmas decorations, in addition to the always available coffee, tea, water, etc. The pool was of good size, and of interesting design. The game room above the check-in desk was a pleasant surprise with a pool table, large TV, and comfortable sitting all around. The breakfasts were more than adequate with many choices of hot and cold foods with a special treat on Christmas morning. The rooms were sufficient in size with a great view of the river, the shower/stool were in a separate little room, the towels/washcloths were of excellent fluffiness and softness, and in the other room there was a large sink, a refrigerator, and many amenities which the lodge provided. Downsize: the beds are hard (needed a topper), the bath/shower is quite narrow causing me to hit the shower curtain every time I turned around which resulted in some water getting out onto the tiled bathroom floor which made it slippery upon exiting the shower even with the bath towel on the floor. Needed: a curved curtain rod, and a longer curtain plus every shower should have a grab bar for safety. Over the tub, caulking was cracked and in need of paint. The shower head could be replaced with one that doesn’t spray so harshly. Above the sink – the upper wall covering was bubbling, caulking cracked, too much moisture in that area. Beds are hard. And, finally, the clock over the fireplace – the second hand wasn’t working nor was the time correct.
Lastly the staff – we were warmly greeted, the desk staff were very competent, and pleasant to work with, the staff in the breakfast area always monitored the food supplies, they cleaned after each party left the area, and were very friendly. We rented four (4) rooms for two (2) nights, and my family had excellent experiences within the lodge and surrounding area.

Beautiful hotel with lovely amenities and setting. Rooms are over sized and nicely equipped. Lobby, game room, and breakfast room are stunning and comfortable shared spaces. Kids love the pool and the playroom tucked under the stairs. Drink service available 24 hours. Hotel setting is delightful and makes you feel that you are staying in a nature perverse. Location is very convenient a few minutes from cute, downtown Alanson and less than 15 minutes from Boyne Highlands, Nubs Nob, Petoskey and Harbor Springs

This is an awesome hotel. The rooms were large and very clean, the pool area was nice and well maintained, breakfast was really good (they had a system in place to offer the full breakfast safely during the Covid19 Pandemic), Beautiful Back Patio with seating areas and a bonfire pit, large back lawn for kids to run around, and even kayaks you could check out for free. They also have a game room with board games, books, puzzles, pool table, and a TV. Restaurants in the area were very good, and it was only a 25 minute drive from here to Mackinaw City.

The policy seems to be to let 8 people into the pool/hot tub unmasked. This makes sense if 6 people are in the pool and two related people are in the hot tub. But if 4,5,6,7, or 8 want to go into the hot tub and they are unrelated, this is crazy. There was another couple in the hot tub so we waited our turn. Another couple came in and the 2 new people joined the 2 already in the hot tub. We indicated that we were waiting. They replied that masks were not required in the hot tub and 8 people could use it at once. Please, please, please change this policy. The hot tub is too small for any amount of unrelated people to be in the tub without masks. Also there is no reason not to wear masks in the hot tub.

We will not use the hot tub until this policy is changed and we stay at Crooked River in part to use the hot tub after we ski. You could require masks in the hot tub, have a time limit, and a limit of no more than 3 to respect the 6' limit.
