Due to government restrictions in Guatemala, I had to cancel my hotel reservation. With the airport in Guatemala closed to tourists, how was I to get there? It has been almost a month since I received confirmation of my cancellation from the hotel. This cancellation confirmed in writing that the hotel would refund my deposit in full to my credit card. The hotel has still not done so. Still waiting. Visa informed me today that no credit has been issued by the hotel to date. Unconscionable delay is a disappointing feature of a good hotel.

Dear Mrs. Marli H, We really appreciate your kind comments and concern about bank procedures taking so long. According to our conversation earlier this week, the refund process has already been finished and your account should show the credit. We are looking forward for a future stay, and our team will be more than glad to be your hosts on your next visit to Antigua. Stay safe. Warm wishes, Guest Relations Manager

Porta Antigua Hotel is a gorgeous oasis of a hotel located in the incredible city of La Antigua and is about a three-minute walk to the main square of the city. It is a large hotel with many people working there to make sure you have a wonderful time. All of the staff have excellent manners and are helpful and kind: Carlos, Juan, Fernando, Percy, Rosario, Horacio, Alejandro, Diego, Luis, Pedro, Jose Luis, Lorena, Genaro, and Josue (el chef ejecutivo)—and many more people whose names I do not recall but who all made us feel at home. We stayed in the hotel during the coronavirus pandemic for 90 days when the country was on lockdown and the borders were closed—so we had a chance to experience a lot from within the hotel and get to know a lot of people there. The hotel was very careful about the virus: everyone wore a mask immediately (from March), they took our temperatures daily, socially distanced appropriately, gave us lots of hand sanitiser, and sprayed our shoes with bleach anytime we left the hotel and returned to the hotel grounds. Every day everyone was generous and helpful, and treated us with dignity and respect as individuals during a very difficult time when they were away from their own families working for the hotel—since there was a national late afternoon curfew so lots of staff had to stay there overnight, unable to return to their families at the end of the day. The hotel itself features several old-style fancy Antiguan buildings and two swimming pools: one is in a huge lush fantastic garden area, and one is in a courtyard. We used the pool daily, and it made our time there fantastic. There are amazing plants like gigantic birds of paradise, heliconia and philodendron and many others growing on the grounds of the hotel’s extensive garden. They have a large poolside outdoor area for dining as well as a cafe/bar area that is more enclosed when it is cooler or rains. They have two 35-year-old guacamayas who say “hola” when you walk by: Lola and Pepa. There are also many wild birds who sing loud and strong and all day. There are a few interesting fountains on the grounds and many large wooden benches with cushions. on them where you can read, chat, watch the volcanoes or see the sunset. All rooms have fireplaces and someone will come to your room and light a fire upon request when it gets cool during the rainy season. Many rooms have private patios. Over our 90 days there, we stayed in 3 different rooms but our favorites were suites 101 and 103; they were large rooms with beautiful dark tile floors, and everything was comfortable and clean and made well. The hotel features a beautiful, long portico and lots of places to walk around. The hotel reception is wonderful too—a large room with a huge fireplace, a fountain next to it, local paintings, a piano, the concierge desk, a model of the hotel, etc. They also have a big grassy lawn and a playground for children and a workout area and spa for adults. There is also a beautiful large “sala” where you can work or have a party (if not in a pandemic)—it overlooks a huge patio and the weathered baroque church of San Jose el Viejo--it couldn’t be more beautiful. After 90 days there, the staff threw us a surprise party dinner—and it was wonderful! Josue, the amazing chef, prepared all of the delicious specialties that we had been ordering every day and set up a very fancy candlelit table for us—so we had a feast of our favourite items. They also wrote us kind cards. Over the three months we were there, we celebrated a birthday in the family so we had a family party, with special excellent foods, a fun piñata event, swimming, etc. We also had Easter there and a big fun Easter egg hunt. We coloured our own eggs, and they let us do what we wanted in general. The only downside to the experience was that it was very expensive, and even though we were given some discounts, we were charged for absolutely everything, even during a pandemic when we didn’t have much choice in the matter. Overall we are very grateful to the wonderful staff at Porta Antigua that kept us safe during the pandemic, and we felt very happy and lucky to have spent so much time in a such a wonderful place. We have excellent memories of our time at this hotel.

This is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at with incredible staff catering to your every need. I felt like family whilst I was there! I stayed for 3 weeks during the pandemic and was so impressed with all the measures the hotel have put in place to keep everyone safe and well. They give you a box of masks, gloves and a bottle of hand sanitiser upon arrival, all the staff wear masks and gloves and the rooms and everything else are cleaned to the highest standard. Plus the prices they've been offering during this time are incredible value for money! Definitely would recommend and hope to be back once travel reopens. Thank you so much for looking after me so well until I could return home!

Everything about this hotel was awesome. The staff made me feel welcomed from the minute i arrived until the day i departed. The view from the dining area with the mountains in the background was spectacular. The grounds were manicured to perfection with flowering plants in every direction. In the center of the pool / courtyard area was the largest bougainvillea i have ever seen. It was blue and in full bloom. I estimate it was 40 feet plus in height. Fresh flower arrangements in the reception and dining area. The room was well appointed, clean, and comfortable. I travel extensively for business and pleasure. This in one of the best hotels i have ever stayed at, truly an amazing experience. The city of Antigua is beautiful, with a grand plaza, preserved buildings and churches from the time when Antigua was the capitol of Guatemala. If you are traveling to Antigua, do not miss the opportunity to stay at this hotel.
