We recently stayed at the Veranda House for two nights and the experience was absolutely phenomenal. Starting from the moment I booked the reservation, the staff were superb. I had asked for certain accommodations around my bike that I brought to the island, and they were extremely accommodating. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. A full wrap-around patio creates a ton of space for guests to relax and enjoy the day. The staff always keeps some type of beverage available to guests in the lobby, whether it be tea at night, hot coffee in the morning, and iced coffee in the afternoon, it was fresh and a great addition. The hotel was able to continue serving breakfast in the mornings by supplying guests with little lunchboxes filled with fun treats. The rooms were simple and extremely clean and felt high quality. Everything has been updated in the last year and it is very noticeable. We were so impressed with the new management team of Shaun and John, who do an amazing job with service and recommendations and really make you feel like you are staying at the best hotel on the island. The location is perfect walking distance to town and very easy access to get out to any of the beaches on the island. The value of the stay was also impressive. We booked last minute and many other similar luxury hotels on the island were priced near to or over $1,000, the Veranda House was $519. We can not recommend this place enough and we hope to come back again soon!

Pros:
— Really nice bathroom with waterfall shower!
— staff (John) was very kind
— perfect location
— beautiful grounds with firepit
— amazing view of harbor from top floor
— they offer beach chairs and towels
— really good coffee

Cons:
— Main reason we chose this hotel was b/c of the private balcony (we booked the “Veranda Queen Balcony”). So we were pretty disappointed that our room didn’t have a balcony, rather the balcony was public, with the entrance being in the hallway. When I asked about this the woman at front desk said there are no rooms with private balconies. So DON’T pay extra for the balcony because anyone can use it! Other downside of this was that we had to keep shades down because others can see right in.
— WiFi wasn’t usable, at least from our room
— Wasn’t a big deal to us, but service was pretty bad overall. Definitely need one more person at the front desk (the 1 person there was in charge of restocking breakfast, check-in, helping construction people, etc.) Each morning the breakfast food was almost empty, they can replenish if you wait a little bit. No phone in room and front desk often unmanned. Would recommend calling the hotel for help, most of the time call was answered right away. We asked for room to be serviced on our third day but they never came. Robes were not in the room however we were able to obtain them after asking.

Overall we would stay again and just not pay extra for view or balcony. Thank you!!

I stayed here for a long weekend and couldn't have had a better experience. The location is ideal, the room was beautiful, and the entire staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The decor is elegant and cozy at the same time and I absolutely love the Matouk bedding. The hotel was fully booked that weekend but that didn't keep us from getting top tier treatment. In the morning they served these amazing chia seed overnight oats with fresh berries that I could eat every morning, along with yogurt parfaits, bantam bagels, and pastries. Everything was individually proportioned or packaged, so it was convenient and COVID friendly. John, the manager, was incredibly helpful all weekend. He offered suggestions, gave great directions, called us cabs, and even made us reservation at a restaurant. On Sunday night we got back from a very late dinner and my fiance called the front desk for an extra towel. John picked up immediately and brought us fresh towels within minutes. I had to do some work on Monday, so I sat in the reception area for a couple hours and witnessed how helpful John was to every guest and his staff. I also just wished I could have stayed there forever! I'd rather WFH here than in my home office. It was so lovely and I can't wait to book our next stay. We will definitely be coming back.

This place has a clever website showing the rooms and amenities, but don’t expect that upon arrival. The rooms have noisy window air conditioning, which never shows on the website. The staff is mostly young and untrained. At check in no one talked about the facility and what was offered. The website shows a beautiful breakfast, the truth is you get a bag at your door in the morning with a stale donut or muffin and a small piece of cold quiche along with a banana, not talked about on the website or check in. After a day out we came back at 4PM and our room was not made up, upon going to the front desk they told us you have to request maid service due to covid and was handed a few new towels. They never explain this when booking or upon arrival. You have to carry your bags up and down two or three flights of stairs no assistance. Upon asking for a beach bag to use at 10am I was told they were all out, what at 10am. Upon further questioning was told they were being washed, I would think they would do that overnight and be ready for quests in the morning. I could go on and on with the failures of this place. It’s a good location, but AVOID as others nearby are much nicer and their prices are over the top given the total lack of service offered. Never again would I say here.

Booked two rooms with queen beds we got tiny compact room with a full beds. The rooms are sterile, no hair dryer, asked for laundry bag they didn’t have it either, its also so small not even space for any luggage. In my room the air conditioner didn’t work.
The other room my friends shower was broken.
Breakfast was late had many guests waiting, it also wasn’t good, just yogurt juice and coffee yet wasn’t served till after 8:30 which is so late when you hear everything and up for hours. Many of us guests were on the patio waiting for the “breakfast”
The service is worse, no ones ever at the front desk. I wouldn’t stay here. it’s $600 a room and you get cheap beds/pillows rooms tiny rooms. They had one communal pitcher of water that was empty the entire time.
( I loved 21 broad when I stayed there last year.) Stay there, save yourself from this place.

This was my 4th visit to the Veranda house. We had stayed last a few years back prior to covid and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately the hotel has taken a few steps backwards. We were aware that some of the rooms were very small. Unfortunately we got tricked like many others with the room we chose on line. The room was so tight we couldn’t fit out suit cases in an open position. There was no closet. Lastly the shower need needed tightening as water sprayed all over and the shower bar was loose. I was able to hand tighten and used a butter knife to tighten. John was kind enough to allow us to move rooms the following day. This room was bigger and made our stay more enjoyable. That being said, the hotel supplies one ice bucket sized garbage can. House keeping is only upon request. I found myself and others daily taking out their garbage on vacation. I was told the lack of cans is part of the ascetic. Also there are few clothes hooks which in a small space would be helpful. More can be done inexpensively to make the rooms work. Floors are crooked - it is an old Inn, but furniture is not adjusted so draws fly open or dressers rock. Some may find this quaint.. The breakfast really has been reduced to a snack with little choices - yogurt and quiche . Coffee was weak and set up late - on two dates the staff forgot to brew it. Not fun when working in am before family arises. The wine happy hr is gone. On the positive there is free water. The Inn used to have a filtered water bottle fill up but it was broken. The bathroom in the lobby also was out of order for 2 of the days we stayed. Curiously there is a handyman on staff but he didn’t seem too handy. There is a nice fire pit and nice grounds. Location is great and views are nice from high floors. We visit the island at least once a year but for the money will try another place next time or ask better questions before booking. Staff were accommodating and helpful especially Simone.

Hi Craig, Thanks for your review and patronage of The Veranda House. I think it's fair to say that we've all taken a few steps back both during and post-covid, and are really looking to find that sweet spot of service and product given the rapid ramp up and demand we're seeing this season and moving forward. I will definitely be following up with my team regarding the timeliness of our breakfast service, as I agree having fresh brewed coffee available first thing in the morning is crucial for a start to the day. Regarding the bathroom in the lobby - we did have a leak caused by condensation with our HVAC system which required us to tear down some ceilings and walls - a bit of work beyond Larry our Maintenance guy's scope of work. We do have an additional bathroom in Chapman House with a shower - which was offered when I explained to your partner that we could not extend a late check out past 1 pm due to business demand. Thank you for your kind words about Simone - she is truly an angel sent from above and I am so happy that you found her helpful during your stay. Best, JCB

Stayed here for one week. Pros: it’s a very casual bed/breakfast vibe so you can come on and off the property as you please without having to interact with anyone, my friend and I enjoyed long evenings on the deck. Getting a room with a balcony/deck is a must. The property is also very centrally located and it’s a few minutes walking distance to everything.

Cons: the rooms are subpar to what is advertised, they just felt very basic for what you pay for. I agree with the other review that the staff seems untrained to handle the summer rush and especially with all the current restrictions. Rooms are small, furniture feels cheap and there’s a small window AC unit which is disappointing when you’re paying more than $600-700/night.

Overall the property is nice and we enjoyed the stay but there is a lot of room for improvement. For the price of the rooms, I would rather stay at a slightly more expensive hotel for better overall experience and room.

First of all, the location is good. It’s in town, within walking distance of most restaurants and attractions.

That being said…

My stay here was disappointing. We made a reservation in one house and were “upgraded,” without our knowledge or assent, into a smaller room at the top floor of the main house. We had to lug our own bags up three flights of stairs (there’s no elevator)—no one offered to help us.

The room we stayed in was quite small—like second-tier cruise ship small. There was no sitting area, only a single chair, and a single small closet. There were no bathrobes. The Wi-Fi was free, but spotty. There was no room in the bathroom, no counter space, etc.

Breakfast was the exact same every day—salmon (inexplicably, as no one ever ate it), bagels, pastries, vanilla yogurt and fruit, with juice and milk. There was no variety and no creativity in this. I’ve stayed in B&B’s from Maine to Oregon and south to Florida, and I can safely say that this was the most consistently unexciting breakfast I’ve ever seen in any such establishment.

Service was similarly mediocre. The staff seemed unenthusiastic at best, and downright indifferent at worst. They were marginally cheerful and consistently unhelpful. The woman who checked us in admitted that it was her first day at the inn. She didn’t even know where our room was (she went the wrong way the first time, and she knew we were in the building).

I’ve stayed at the Nantucket Inn, about a block from this place, as well as the White Elephant, which is next door. I’d gladly pay a good bit more to stay in one of those places. Both of them are outstanding. This place…isn’t. And for $600 a night, it should be.

The hotel rooms are very small and don’t even have closets or a place to hang up clothing.

The place was advertised a full service hotel but has the same amount of service as a double tree.

The advertised breakfast consists of yogurt and a stale bagel if you happen to get there early enough.

The sheets on the beds were filthy, when asked for clean sheets, we came home to beds with no sheets. When asked for sheets after waiting for an hour for the general manger finally came and put on the sheets while being very disrespectful.

Lastly, we saw several cockroaches in our room.

Hi Dillon, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry that the physical features of the room did not meet your needs and will pass this along to our design team as we look for opportunities to enhance our product. We are taking your feedback on our breakfast program very seriously as we look to refine our service to meet the needs of everyone. Our front desk team is available from 7 am to 11 pm, and all after-hours calls are answered by myself or a member of my management team. It is my sincerest apologies that your sofa bed was not made up prior to your return and it was my pleasure to assist in making that up and applying a $200 credit to your folio for the oversight. Standing in the guest corridor yelling obscene language at 1:30 am while also removing items from our lobby is not acceptable behavior and impacts the experience for our other guests - asking you to please lower your tone was not a sign of disrespect on my part. I have taken your room out-of-order so we may have Ecolab our pest-management vendor complete an inspection and treatment of your room. We wish you all the best, JCB

The Veranda was the perfect boutique hotel, with just about the best service I've ever had. John (I think that was his name) the hotel manager of this small, cozy place goes way above and beyond to ensure guests have everything they need. When our boat was delayed and we had to stay an extra night he could not have been more accommodating. They were super flexible on our checkout time and day, and even had a special, significantly lower-priced, rate for those of us who were stuck overnight due to high winds cancelling boats. Room was very small and might have been uncomfortable for the 2 uf us if we had more than 2 days of clothing with us, but everything else was terrific. Prosecco at the breakfast buffet was a nice touch. Hotel location was perfect. Just a hair out of the center of town, walkable from docks, restaurants and everything.

Hey Gary, Thank you so much for hunkering down with us during what turned out to be a very blustery weekend! Boat delays and cancellations can be stressful enough - so we pride ourselves in making these experiences positive and memorable for all of our guests - this includes extending special "stranded rates" and being flexible with departure/check out time when we have the wiggle room! I am happy to share that we are reconfiguring the room you were in to be more conducive for traveling couples for multiple night stays with more space! We always leave the light on for friends so please keep in touch - we look forward to having you bACK! JCB
