We spent one night in this hotel in the context of an 18-days trip (15 hotels) through the western Balkans. On the positive side: the comfortable rooms (we had a double bed suite), nicely decorated with original items, creating an “at home” feeling; the location, not too far from the city centre, on a quiet side road; the warm welcoming and the friendly attention provided by the reception staff; the very rich breakfast buffet (although we were just two parties in the hotel); closed parking space; low prices. Potential for improvement: No cosmetics in the bathroom, except for two hair shampoo sachets; a shower head close to its technical end-of-life; a very narrow top sheet for the double bed, not enough to cover two people; a huge TV set, but not visible from the bed. All in all a very nice stay.

The staff welcomed us immediately upon our arrival and quickly carried the bags to our room. Their English was excellent and they gladly helped make transit arrangements. The hotel and room were both very clean and the hotel is charming. They have a lovely garden for relaxation with a large fig tree. We enjoyed having the breakfast, too (included in the price). A great deal!

My husband and I stayed in Rose Diplomatique for three nights during our Ex-Yugoslavia trip to the Balkans.
It was our second time in Skopje so we were eager to see how the city changed and planed to do a lot of sightseeing. We chose this hotel because of its excellent reviews on Tripadviser.com since I’ve come to rely mostly on the judgments of the fellow travelers.
The hotel is situated in a quiet residential area but very close to the center, within a 10 minute walking distance, so we had access to everything we required during our short stay in Skopje.
The room we stayed in was very clean, elegantly furnished, with a lot of personal touches that can be found all around the hotel which made it feel less like a hotel and more like staying at someone’s home. The best thing about this hotel is the back yard which is simply lovely and perfect to relax in after a day spent walking around the city.
Another great thing about this hotel are the people working there. The staff could not do enough to facilitate us and make our stay enjoyable. They answered all our questions, and believe me we ask a lot!!! :)
So in a word all thumbs up for Rose Diplomatique! We would definitely stay there again if we came back to Macedonia.

Very nice hotel with a family atmosphere. The reception staff is extremely friendly and happy to share insider tips about Skopje (special thanks to Vlatko an Filip!!) Our room had a nice balcony on the hotel courtyard. Rooms are clean and comfortable, breakfast is more than copious with homemade pastries and Macedonian specialties, and the hotel courtyard invites to reading while having a coffee. The hotel is located in a quiet residential neighborhood but only 10min walk from the city center. Free parking. We will definitely go back to Rose Diplomatique!!

The staff were so kind & helpful nothing was too much trouble from our arrival(minus our luggage) until our departure in the early hours of the morning 5 days later. Our suite was so comfortable & welcoming, the sitting area was home from home& always warm. Every day the suite was cleaned to a very high standard as was the bathroom. All the staff were so friendly all had welcoming smiles & any problems ie:lost luggage, was dealt with quickly & always with a smile. The breakfast was of a very high standard with a variety of food.It was only a short walk to the centre & was easy to locate. We cannot recommend Rose Diplomatique highly enough. Thank you to you all for helping to make our stay in Skopje so special & we hope to return before too long.

This lovely guest house completely saved our trip. I was very ill during my stay and the housekeeping and manager took excellent care of me and were very kind. I couldn't have asked for more. It is in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance from the centre.

Quiet, comfortable, charming hosts. They were helpful with answering questions, history of the area, recommendations for places to visit. We loved the garden patio and great breakfasts. Easy to get to downtown. Rooms were spacious and well-appointed - more like a B&B.

I actually had a booking at the Stone Bridge Hotel which I cancelled a few weeks before I was due to travel after reading the reviews of Rose Diplomatique on tripadvisor, a decision which I later regretted.

The half day tour

The main reason that made me switch was reading that the hotel had its own driver and could arrange easily half day excursions to the Matka Canyon/ Lake, Vodno Mountain cable car and Saint Pantelejmon monastery. One of the reviews describing this also wrote that the cost was 1200 MKD.
This is something I was really keen to do, and since we didn’t have that much time in Skopje, I switched bookings without hesitation. When I emailed the hotel to book this half day tour the Monday I mentioned that it was my birthday and wanted to do something special. The hotel quoted me €30 which is considerably more than the reviews had mentioned but since this is something I really wanted to do I agreed to this (even if I did think that I was slightly being taken advantage of already then).
Lake Matka was stunning and I recommend anyone visiting Skpje to not miss it. But when we got to the monastery and fond it shut the driver said that it was ‘because it was Monday’. He then drove us to the Vodno Mountain cable car which was also shut. At this point I was very disappointed because it was my birthday and I would have liked to spend the time differently rather than driving to places and find them shut – especially as the driver seemed to know exactly the exact opening times of the monastery and the cable car when we asked him whether they were going to be open the next day, which makes me think how could he not have known they were shut on Mondays???

What made me most angry was however the attitude of the hotel reception when we got back to the hotel – I asked them how could they not know that the things they booked us to see were closed. The guy with the longish hair was extremely rude and immediately defensive and he could not have handled the situation in a worse manner if he had tried. He told me he didn’t know because ‘he didn’t run the city’ and when I told him that the I would have liked to not spend my birthday driving to places that were shut he told me that ‘on his birthday a hotel in Italy charged him €5 for breakfast’. I am sorry but a) your breakfast was probably not included in your room rate and b) I don’t care! You are a hotel and you are selling me a service/tour, it was your responsibility to inform me that things you are selling me in your package are going to be closed, ie not sell me the tour on that day– even just in light of a little thing called ‘customer service’ and basic decency – it should be your priority that I, as a customer, have a good experience of the city while I am staying in your hotel. Especially when you are already overcharging me.

To make matters worse, the driver, upon us handing him a €50 note only wanted to give us €10 back instead of €20 as agreed. On the basis of what?? God knows. Since we got back a lot earlier of the half day we had agreed (because everything was shut). We basically had to argue with him to have the correct change back. Eventually he did. Still – not good at all.

The actual hotel

The reservation I had the Stone Bridge Hotel was only €15 more expensive (in total) and I really wish I had stuck with it. It is bang in the middle of town, in between the new and the old part.
At Rose Diplomatique we paid €90 a night for a suite which we didn’t want (I don’t like suites, we like to explore and had no need for the extra room but at the time of booking a simple double was not available although the hotel seemed empty when we were there with very few people staying – but obviously this is only my impression and I could be wrong)

The hotel is a good 15 mins walk to the centre in a very residential area (very deserted at night) that could intimidate some people especially if walking back late at night. We however found Skopje very safe at any time of day and/or night.

What I disliked most about this hotel is the presence of soft rugs everywhere on the floor, especially in the bathroom. I counted three only in there, including one around the actual toilet. This is so unhygienic. It would be unhygienic in your house, let alone in a hotel bathroom!!

Also, there is also SO MUCH TAT everywhere in the room, on every single surface: clocks, artefacts, elephants, wooden ducks, etc etc. I understand some people might like that but in a hotel but this was beyond quaint and homely– it was more like a 90-year-old flat: it was just cluttered beyond belief. I prefer to have some clear spaces to put my things and I don’t like having to worry about dropping or breaking so many things everywhere.
The toilet flush is operated by a flimsy string that came out of place at least three times during the two nights we stayed and my boyfriend had to fiddle with and fix every time in order to be able to flush.
Breakfast is very average: with omelettes just sitting on a hot plate and the coffee on a warm pot was only about lukewarm.

I have to say I would not have found all those things half as annoying had the guy at reception not been so rude and patronising to me. He needs to understand what customer service is and that how helpful a hotel reception is makes or breaks someone’s stay in a city.

Luckily he didn’t manage to ruin by birthday, and we still got to see the things we wanted to see…. The next day. we got a cab to mount Vodno cable car and when we were done the very kind man at a hotel reception up there called us a cab, asking the driver to stop at Pantelejmon monastery – the driver even stopped the meter while we looked around the monastery and dropped us off in town (of course we gave him a good tip) I would do it this way… There is also a bus that goes to Mount Vodno.
Tip about city cabs in Skopje – always ask for the meter to be turned on. You get ripped off if they don’t. Cabs are very cheap.

Sad to have had this experience at Rose Diplomatique – our whole trip around Macedonia was great and Macedonian people in general were very wonderful with a great sense of hospitality.

While we were traveling to Skopje, we booked a suite in the hotel and we loved it! The hotel staff and service is just amazing, and the location is within 15 minute walk to the city center.
Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable with free WiFi.
On top of everything, in the morning there was fresh and home made breakfast cooked by the hotel chef. We will be coming back again, thank you!
