We arrange trips to the San Blas Islands for only 130$ one night all inclusive! Hostel Casa Areka is located in the heart of Panama City close to the vibrant district “Calle Uruguay”. There is a 24hr supermarket opposite of the hostel and two big malls, many restaurants and bars as well as the bus stop (e.g. to the Panama Canal or Casco Viejo) in walking distance. The highlight of our hostel is the amazing pool area surrounded by palm trees with a BBQ area where you can hang out. Inside we have a common room with a pool table and a common kitchen that is equipped with everything you need to cook your own meals (remember there is a 24hr supermarket across the street). We offer private rooms as well as dorms – all with air-conditioning. Breakfast and Internet are included. We also offer laundry service.

Detailed Reviews
Can not fault this place, facilities great, it is a beautiful comfortable outdoor oasis with swimming pool, BBQ, seating area and hammock space, well equipped kitchen, SUPER clean, hot showers, the beds soooo comfortable and the bed linen changed regularly, room cleaned every other day if you want it.
Very tranquil considering it's smack bang in the centre of bustling Panama City, there are quite rooms available if city noise bothers you, so request when booking, they are very accommodating here.
All of the staff are so kind, fun... in a word... AMAZING!!!
It's a wonderful vibe here, exceded our expectations. HIGHLY recommend. 5*

I enjoyed my stay at casa Areka. The staff (Jesús) was really fun and the hostel has everything it needs to have: an outside area, shared bathrooms but also bathrooms in your room, a pool billard, etc. Absolutely recommendable!

I reserved the private room with private bathroom and although the sink and the A/C were not working properly, it was completely fixed 3 days after. Great choice for an area that is known for expensive lodging. Facilities are comfortable and staff is very serviceable. Place only takes cash, just to keep it in mind.

We had the double room which was very simple with old-ish furniture and AC that worked most of the time. Not much insulation so the noise was there - from other guests and from the street mostly. However, it was a great start of our trip in Panama, as it was in a safe rich neighbourhood and had a very welcoming vibe. The breakfast was tasty and a nice experience, given that you have to make it yourself :) It's a bit further from the old town but with Uber everything was a couple of dollars away. And it was very close to Cinta Costera beachwalk.

In the heart of downtown in a very safe area. A large supermarket across the road and plenty of nearby options for lunch and dinner, although has full cooking facilities.
Comfortable dorm rooms, spacious, comfortable beds and good AC. Has a small pool, good for cooling down, plus a nice chill out area.
VERY friendly and nice staff, nice family style atmosphere, two sweet cats.
Panama City, well not much to do there, the old town is just a tourist trap enclave. I recommend a trip to San Blas islands for some adventure.
This hostel, Highly recommended.

When my boyfriend and I arrived at Casa Areka, we were pleased with the accommodations. As time passed, we were less and less impressed. A couple days into our stay, we found bugs in the bathroom. About halfway through our trip, we checked one of our hiding places for "return home" money and I thought some was missing, but I assumed maybe I had miscounted. We double checked how much money we had in our envelope and placed it in our hiding spot so that we had enough money to head home. A couple of odd things started happening. We came in one afternoon to find that our bathroom had been cleaned, but our bed was not made and there were no towels in the room (services that had been previously been a part of our service). Then, our last day, the cleaning lady attempted to enter our room and informed us that she was told today was the day we had left. The last night of our stay, we were packing and pulled out money out. More than HALF of it was missing. Oswald had not given us a number to contact him and no one was working downstairs. I emailed Oswald IMMEDIATELY to inform him of the lost money. He has yet to respond to my email, two days later. Considering his email responses up until this point happened mere HOURS after emailing him, I am severely disappointed. Unfortunately, since what was taken was cash, we have no paper trail to be able to discuss with the police. What a terrible way to end a trip!

My experience overall was good until I realized the day after I left there is $200 missing from my money belt. I called Oswald (the owner) and informed him of the situation. Without giving me the benefit of the doubt he right away accused me of losing the money and that he trusts his housekeeper Veronica who has been working for him for over 2 years. I never mentioned to him that I suspect Veronica. I guess this is a common occurane there and he has a speech prepared for these situations. I would've gone to the police but was already in Colon ready to sail to Colombia. If you stay at this hostel make sure your room is never left unattended with your valuables!

I chose Hostal Casa Areka because it has a pool and Panama is HOT! The pool is small, but refreshing. We enjoyed drinking $1 beers while our 12 yr old son enjoyed cooling off in the pool. The outside patio area can be loud during the day due to constant beeping car horns, but it was quiet at night. The hostel (kitchen area, rooms, pool, patio area) was all very clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. They were always happy and patient with helping me practice Spanish. Family friendly for families traveling on a budget.

Although the place is in a decent enough location in Panama, I couldn't imagine being stuck with some of the rooms. Room #2 I believe on the main floor would be a nightmare right outside the main area where it is loud throughout the night. Only one bathroom has hot water to shower. Our rooms got mixed up and were not what we booked. After being told we could leave our stuff inside our rooms (Good thing we didn't) We came back to realize our room was given to someone else. With no other rooms available we were given the owners room for the night (not kidding it was weird)..... at that point we just left in the middle of the night and went to another hotel. Maybe just bad luck but that was unreal. Never Again. There were other things like bugs and long waits for the one hot water shower.. but honestly we expected that so that would not be considered a negative. We loved Panama so do yourself a favor and pay the extra bit for a proper place and really enjoy your trip.
