If you’re traveling as a couple, think carefully before you book Mamallena. My wife and I stayed here for two nights thinking it would be easier to set up a San Blas tour than somewhere else. We ended up booking with San Blas dreams (based in el machico hostel) so it didn’t make a difference where we stayed.

For $30 plus tax a night, you get a tiny, hot room with a lumpy bed and shared bathrooms. The room and bathrooms were clean. The hostel is located in an awful location for tourists. You have to take an Uber to go anywhere at any time of day. It wasn’t a neighborhood to stroll around.

The hotels in Panama City are relatively cheap. For $60-70, there are plenty of 4 star hotels in much better locations. If you want a hostel, there are a few around the neighborhood with all the casinos that is a much better area to stay in. The prices when we checked were similar to Mamallena.

Stayed here for 3 nights in late February and would definitely recommend this place. From the minute we arrived which was really late at night, everything was super easy and chilled. All the staff were helpful and informative. Free pancakes for breakfast and wifi is included. It's within walking distance to the old town (Casco viejo) but also super easy to grab a taxi to take you where ever you need to go. If you like relaxed, quirky and easy going hostels then I couldn't recommend this place anymore.
Mamallenas also has an eco-lodge hostel roughly an hour and a half from Panama City and I would highly recommend.. this was my favourite place in all of Panama. You're missing it out if you don't visit.

I've stayed at Hostal Mamallena in Cartagena and it was an absolutely amazing experience. The best thing is, we met fellow travelers in the Mamallena in Panama and they said the same thing. The staff was friendly, insightful, and just great people to be around. The kitchen is always clean, the common area is perfect. Plenty of information for sights and things to do in Panama. The rooms are very clean, quite, and perfect for the price. I think it's the best in town! Thank you for being so awesome!

This is where you want to stay in Panama City. We are following our pirate bretheren and sailing from Panama to Colombia and this hostel is a one-stop-shop. good beds, showers, free breakfast and can book that cruise tour through the islands on the way to Colombia. I fear for my sanity after a week here about to leave on this pirate ship. but that is always a good thing. normal is boring. memories/money. rich is a good kent

I stayed I little more than a week as a backpacker at Mamallena hostel, they just had all I need. Great atmosphere, good rooms, lots of people to meet and the staff members are really nice and helpful ! Everything you need is around and the metro 2 streets across makes your life easier! I really recommend this place where they make you feel like a family member.
Thank you for everything.

I ended up arriving in Panama at the unfortunate hour of 3 in the morning and usually do zero pre-planning. I found an Internet cafe open near the 5 Mayo bus stop. I did some quick searching and found Mamallenas to have the best connections to ship captains sailing to Colombia.

I walked several kilometers at 4 am and saw the beginning of the morning rush. The directions on their site are very concise. I am in my dorm with ac blasting and am very happy. They have well illustrated and honest printed guides to the different sailing options.

There is ample artwork, good space, dimmable lighting and everything one may need.

We stayed at Mamallena 2 nights and it was enough. We took a private room and it was very small with no windows and the AC wasn't working. Although it was clean, we had a hard time to breathe in the night because of the humidity in the room. During our stay there was always weird people sleeping on the couch during the day and it felt a little bit uncomfortable. The staff are ok. If you gonna ask them questions they gonna answer you but nothing more than what you asked. The hostel is ok for the price.

This hostel has a wonderful vibe, with very nice volunteeers and a decent free breakfast. they also help out with booking numerous tours at no extra cost, including sailing trips to columbia. They only have cold showers, but thats ok as panama city is usually cooking during the day. they have an excellent backyard patio with several well placed hammocks. the beds are clean and fairly comfortable.

The only negative is the area it is located. there is absolutly nothing to do around the hostel, and you dont want to be out during night alone. it is a wonderful place to stay if you are planning to move on quickly out from panama city as it is close to the main bus terminal, but not the best place to set up camp to explore panama city

Stayed for 2 nights in a dorm in Febuary before we did the san blas trip which we booked through them.

Pretty average hostel, beds are comfy and pretty big for bunks. Good a/c that isnt set to an Arctic temperature like most other hostels.

Overall appearance is pretty shabby, old kitchen utensils and kitchen in general is pretty grubby.
Busy place which isnt necessarily a bad thing but hard to find any chill out areas that are free.

Not a great location either as had to take a taxis to both old town and multiplaza. Staff not very helpful in regard to giving directions or giving info.

Bottom line is that there are better options like San Francisco Inn.
