Queens Astoria Design Hotel went beyond and above service during my stay and it is to be commended.
I booked very late and at the last minute because of several Booking.com errors that were completely separate from this hotel, so when I arrived I was tired and just wanted to rest. The room I was initially assigned was the wrong one, and when I went back downstairs, I was quickly assigned another room that exceeded my expectations.
Every day, when I came downstairs, the concierge /front desk made sure that I was enjoying my stay and offered to assist me with any questions I had. When I requested an invoice in dollars to send to Booking.com, they took time out during a particularly busy moment at the front desk to tend to my needs.
Because of their service and attention to detail, I extended my stay through the weekend, and the manager personally spoke to me to ensure that all my needs had been met.
As someone that has traveled to Belgrade many times over the last decade and stayed in several hotels, I will say that this is hands down THE best experience I have ever had in one and it easily could have been the worst.
THIS is how you win international guests over and as this city becomes a go-to destination, Queen’s Astoria Design Hotel will succeed where others fail.
The hotel seems to be used mainly by coach trips. Breakfast is either manic or come down later to find every table dirty and no clean plates or cups. Nothing seems to be replenished. The restaurant staff were very rude.
The saving grace at this hotel is the receptionist Ivana who did her best to help us and others.
Belgrade is a city on the up, long main walkway full of shops about 2km long, I was most surprised by a Belgrade Uni student with two very large telescopes in the city charging a few cents to view Saturn... Now that was amazing a) to view and b) it made n excellent impression on the city.... So that guy with his telescope endeared me to the city, I shall go back and maybe try to view another planet!
Reception:
The young lady at reception spoke english and was very helpful and answered all our questions.
Other staff we encountered were less than helpful or uninterested in ensuring that guests who stay here are made to feel welcome.
Room / facilities:
The room initially assigned reeked of mouldy carpet, wet dog smell, sewerage smell mixed into one cocktail. We asked to move to another room, which 208 was assigned. This room carpets did not smell as bad, but the cleaning of the room was substandard, as some of the linen was marked, fridge was unplugged from the electricity and something had leaked which made a sticky slimy puddle in the fridge.
The room consisted of a fridge, in room safe, flat screen TV, desk, tea and coffee facilities, 2x robes and matching slippers, queen bed with memory foam top and pillows, wardrobe and the usual bathroom items.
Downfalls:
Location of hotel is not in a nice part of the old city.
Room carpet and walkway carpet throughout level 2 have a very, very strong mouldy smell. This was masked by staff spraying air freshener in the walk ways.
There are unpleasant and untrained breakfast staff who seem to just stand around all morning chatting amongst themselves and obtaining drinks from the drink machine which is for guests use at breakfast.
Room cleaning is substandard and payment of a guest insurance without explanation.
Wifi:
No password required (unsecured network) and fast bandwith.
Breakfast:
As we walked into the breakfast room, the young man did not seem to know the procedures to ensure people entering were actually guests. We were referred to reception, where they quickly checked to make sure we paid the city tax and guest insurance, before allowing us into the breakfast room.
There were 5 breakfast staff who were all standing around the entrance to the breakfast room and did not assist guests entering. The two ladies were observed during our breakfast, playing on cell phones, talking to each other, helping themselves to breakfast juices and looking glamorous.
At 9.00 am, the foods that are meant to be hot were just warm or cold and not covered in the steel warming trays. Cold foods, yoghurts fruit salad were just cool and not cold
In our second breakfast there were even more ladies all standing at the bar looking glamorous, with only 2 guests in the breakfast room.
The men are the only staff that help guests and clear tables.
Food was not refilled even with 1 hour remaining until breakfast ceased. The hot food was just as cold as yesterday.
As with yesterday, the local police force visit the hotel frequently to sit down and have breakfast.
The newly placed table clothes on tables were not laundered correctly as ours had some sort of metallic type stains in the center.
Breakfast consisted of eggs scrambled or fried, bacon (swimming in fat), sausages, hot breakfast pastries, salad items, cheeses, cereals tea/coffee/juices, yoghurts, fruits and cakes. I even observed a blow fly on the exposed cheeses.
Conclusion:
There is lots of potential, if the premises was looked after or updated a little (some displays/artwork removed - less is more) staff were trained to service guests and not stand around to look glamours.
Guest insurance is to be paid, but no explanation as to what this is for.
Maintenance and carpet issues were addressed, instead of being "swept under the carpet" and ignored.
Upon writing this Trip Advisor review, I have read 12 months of previous reviews, to see if my experience is an isolated one.
It appears that other guests have raised similar experiences and it is clear that management ignore the issues and problems and nothing has changed in terms of service or facilities.
Location / Nearby:
The hotel is located in a not so nice area of the old Belgrade city. It is less than a 5 min walk to train and bus station, small supermarket across the road, 20 minute stroll to the old city centre and Kalemegdan park, 20 min walk to the shopping mall in new Belgrade.
Getting to / from hotel:
Bus A1 is a 30 min bus ride, to and from the airport. Cost is 300 Dinara per person each way. Cash only is accepted on board.
For the direction of the airport to the city, once the bus crosses the river, there is a stop at one side of the bus station, if you exit here, the hotel is about a 150 m walk.
The bus also stops further around nearer to the train station, if you exit here, this is about a 50 m walk.
To return to the airport, the bus also departs from the stop outside the train station, near the old blue steam train engine on display.
Rich and good breakfast.
Nice and kind english speaking staff, a special mention for Ms. Nevena.
