Little annoying things like the shower head would stay up, and neither would the toilet seat, but nothing major.
Breakfast was good. I could have just had the potato filled pancakes and been very happy.
I mentioned we would be checking out early (6am) when we checked in we were told we could get a breakfast to take away. I was able to pick this up the evening before and keep it in the fridge of in my room and I also paid up at this point. Good job too as when I came down to give the key back at check out reception was empty!
I had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge living room and a small lobby. And when I say huge I mean that 8 persons could have a very nice meeting at the dining table, the room had cupboards full of crystal glasses, a large working desk, beautiful carpets and so on. The bedroom had white furniture and a bed witch would have been considered a top luxury item in the 70's. The hotel had that feeling of communist era architecture but in a sweet way, somehow different of what I experienced in some similar hotels in Moldova, Ukraine or Bulgaria.
Plus:
The location, a few minutes walk from the center;
Good value for money.
Average
Clean, and everything was working all right;
Nothing to be remembered about breakfast;
Minus:
It seems they can’t escape some strange feelings dating from the communist era.
The Chisinau is older in Stalinist architecture, the Cosmos is a more "modern" high rise with lots of ornamental concrete and from the outside, looks pretty good.
Until you get to the small garden/paved area outside the Hotel. If you arrive at night, bring a torch. Seriously, These concrete pavement slabs are seriously displaced and wobbly.
Things look better in the vast Lobby - typical socialist style Tourist/Business Hotel. I remember them from GDR; and if you like this sort of aesthetics, you should at least visit. Also, I was greeted at nine a.m. by name and with big smiles which is unuaual in this neck of the woods. So, top marks for friendliness and Service.
My room on the 5th floor was ready, so I was allowed an early check-in.
The room was rather small, and had the most psychedelic glittery wall paper I've ever seen. There was only a shower, and the bathroom was slightly more modern than at the Chisinau Hotel. And it had warm water. Everything was really clean. The bedroom has carpeting, so bring flip Flops. It looked clean though. Here, my room had a balcony which could be used. There is a bit of crumbling concrete and cracks, but the balcony seemed solid.
So, why not five stars? For five EURO more than I paid at the Chisinau, I got a smaller room, a much less comfortable bed (mattresses are worn in places) and the Wifi really sucked. It was there, but incredibly slow. Forget uploading photos or phoning. Also, after a short while in the bed, I felt incredibly itchy. I checked and could not detect any bugs, and the linen appeared clean - perhaps just an unfortunate reaction to the detergent.
So, altogether a less comfy experience, but I am giving an extra star for the friendliness and good English skills at reception, early check-in, useable balconies and warm water. If you want to catch one of the five Trains a day from the Gara Chinsinau, like I did this is also very convenient - less than five minutes walk. I walked to the Station at 6am and it was perfectly fine, did not feel unsafe.
However there is very little else to recommend it! The entrance looks more like a low market casino than a hotel, and if you are a single male in the reception area in the evening - you may need to decline a local lady (she wasn't upset by my refusal)!
I never found out if my bedroom was "refurbished" - if it was, I would hate to see the old style ones! Whilst the bed was big and comfortable, the bedding was odd - instead of a standard upper sheet, there was a sort of sheetbag - which was ok for one person, but would have been a real struggle for two to share! I plugged in the fridge - this just added to the noise from my neighbours! The wifi in the room was one of the slowest that I've ever experienced (it was fine in reception). There were no english TV channels.
The bathroom was fairly grim too - I'm not sure if it was a cockroach I killed, or a very large beetle! The shower didn't drain properly - I really don't enjoy standing in water to wash. If they forget to replace the shower gel, reception will get it delivered to your room.
Breakfast was a real step back in time - maybe I was unlucky, but there quite a few empty dishes when I arrived. At least you won't find yourself over eating!
Despite the useful location - I will not be returning!
We asked the front office staff to notify the cleaning crew not to disturb us and that we won't be needing any cleaning. We had the "do not disturb" sign hanging the whole time on our door. One morning, before going for breakfast, the cleaning woman asked if we'll be needing cleaning, even though she already knew that we didn't, because we told her before many times to never clean our room. After telling her no again 3 times, we left for breakfast and then came back 30mins. later. The alarm that we installed ourselves turned on right away letting us know that someone set it off while we were gone. That same cleaning woman that we told not to come in, came in, got startled by the alarm and left. She was still on the floor, cleaning rooms nearby. We confronted her and she immediately admitted to it and said "but I just wanted to clean it". This is very, very upsetting and unacceptable. She knew that we were Westerners and no doubt wanted to help herself to some of our expensive stuff. Our alarm scared her away and saved our belongings. After this happened, we notified the front desk and it didn't seem like much would change after this. They really need to do a better job in hiring, screening and firing their dishonest cleaning crew. For this alone they get a 1 star.
The location requires lots of walking, unless you're going to the train station. The breakfast is the same every single day and gets tiring. The rooms could be cleaner and need to be refurnished, actually the whole hotel needed to be refurbished since the Soviet times. Our lamp for example was falling apart.
Anyway, I remember that back in the summer of 1999 I end up for 2 nights in Cosmos hotel in Chisinau and reading recent reviews, I can see that nothing changed. The furniture vas very old also in that time, the sheets the same and everything was from the communist era. From what I see, everything now is the same like it was 13 years ago. Is a pity that they don’t try to improve the things because the location is in the city center and they have lot of untapped potential. I would not recomend this hotel to no one.
Aircon. didnt work, tv didnt work, el. fan in the bathroom didnt work. I hade to be a plummer every time I used the toilett.
It was quite cold at night, so I had to sleep with clothes :)
Balcony REALLY need an upgrade, but the wiew is good. A chair there would be nice.
Girls with the oldest occupation in the lobby every night was not so nice to see.
Breakfast was boring.
+ Staff in the lobby was super friendly. Also the location was good. The prize for the rooms was just fine. You get what you pay for.
