It’s hard to begin to explain all the things that are wrong with this hotel. The cleanliness and shape of the room were below any expected standard. Lights hanging on cables, hanging window curtains, a broken toilet seat, old and ugly furniture, stained towels as well as sheets, a bathtub cover without plastic seal resulting in a pool formation after every shower. We decided to confront the manager of the hotel with all of the above mentioned issues and I have not experienced a more disappointing encounter. Beginning with a dismissing attitude, the manager, who I was talking to in Bulgarian initially completely ignored my girlfriend whom was trying to intervene and talk to him in English after our case was clearly being dismissed. Later, the manager decided to go up to our room, when we pointed out the issues in the room he emphasized how despite the hotel being supposedly 5 stars, we selected to lowest level room and as such we can’t be expecting anything more! Later, his idea was to offer us a “deluxe” standard room, which ironically is the exact same room, 5 floors up, with a new carpet being the only thing that was different to our previous room - oh and also the bathroom was smaller in comparison to the standard room as well. Given that our room was paid for by one of our parents we decided to stay to avoid additional costs. In the following days the cleaning services failed to tidy up our room, the dirty sheets hadn’t been changed, and when we requested it to be done we were told that no cleaning personnel was present and that they can give us sheets but that they won’t change them. The phone in our room had no batteries and as such we had no mean of communicating with the reception to request basic things such as toilet paper that hadn’t been restocked. When asking for room service (available until 23:00) at 21:30 we were told by the receptionist that “no one can bring it” at which point we said we would go and fetch it ourselves which was followed by “there is no one to make it either” - my gf asks how come which was answered with “I don’t know”. Do not by fooled by the tacky redesign of the lobby. The new owner of the hotel has turned it into a horrible shadow of what this famous hotel used to be. Designed by a Japanese architect it is now tacky and packed with escorts and gangster. The Japanese garden is closed, and authentic Japanese cherry trees have been cut!

It’s laughable that trip advisor ranks this hotel highly. This is an old communist building with a superficial makeover done in the style of the worst nouveau riche trash you can imagine. They also have the “pay extra for the spa” scam like the fake Millennium (it’s really not a Millennium hotel) on Vitosha. Stay far away!

I have been at this hotel again. The value for money is at another level and this is by far the cheapest 5-star hotel in Sofia. They have also upgraded me for free this time. Highly recommended especially for business.

Stayed here on business last year. Absolutely fabulous lobby area, bar, restaurant and grounds. However fairly standard above that. Rooms are standard and not in keeping with the luxury of the other parts of the hotel. Food was ok for breakfast but very good in both bar restaurant and Japanese restaurant in garden. Fantastic wild fowl in the garden including white peacock....

Good for convention, reasonable location to town and shopping centre. Decent breakfast spread and taste too. Good WiFi. However, please go for a deluxe or premier room, and not standard (quite run down and the bed is unacceptable).
