Spent 4 nights here on this slice of paradise. We stayed here and as well at Nuku Hiva. Both resorts are unique in the experience. This location is special for its intimate feeling. The staff is all great and feels like family by the time you leave. Highly recommend units 7 or 8 for the views. The view of the mountains is breathtaking. Use the supplied ear plugs, the morning roosters are intent on making sure you see the sunrise but that is everywhere. Do the excursions, Heimata (aka Henry) is amazing, he is a wealth of knowledge on the island, the culture and the plants. I respected his deep faith in his roots and how he shared that with us. Lots of comments prior about the breakfast… completely unwarranted. Food was great every day. If you want a buffet with options to feed a village, stay on Tahiti. Dinners were always great as well. We have been to a number of islands and hotels in FP, this experience is not to be missed, Jean-Jacques and his team go the extra mile making your trip to Hiva Oa special.…
This is one of the few accommodations on Hiva Oa, and while a bit pricey, I was not sure what to expect. We stayed here prior to visiting another Pearl Lodge (which had similar bungalows but more updated) so part of my perspective is influenced by the other property. The lodge itself is high in the hills above town (and not an easy journey for self-navigation though they offer a shuttle in the morning and afternoon). The views are great from the property overlooking the town and water. The bungalows themselves are all similar just with different vantage points. We had a nice ocean view from our balcony. The room itself was a little dated and could stand some freshening up (e.g., my window screen had tears) though comfortable. It also had a small outside deck. The hotel offered excursions (really good) and the restaurant was good (even though you were a bit of a captive audience). They also ran a show two nights a week with Marquesan dancing and song. Since you are captive, suggest going with Full Board (not a lot of options in town). Lots of roosters, so make sure to bring or use the provided ear plugs!…
We stayed 4 nights here on Hiva Oa, and enjoyed the lovely property. The view over the ocean is perfect and we definitely enjoyed morning coffee and evening cocktails on the balcony of our bungalow. It was very relaxing. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, some speak English and some do not. But that is what we expected in the Marquesas. We enjoyed 2 days of tours that were arranged by the hotel staff, and Henry was a most enjoyable guide. He truly gave us the flavor of the islands, the history, and made the stay so much more interesting for us 'tourists'! I suspect visiting Marquesa islands is a 1 time event for most people and I would take full advantage of the activities so you get a real flavor for the island and the boat trip to the next-door island is also quite fun and relaxing. The breakfast buffet does leave a lot to be desired (in comparison with the usual) but we did enjoyed the dinners. All in all it was a very lovely stay and we are so happy that we had a chance to visit the beautiful island of Hiva Oa.…
We had a great stay at Hanakee Lodge in Hiva Oa. Best and only hotel on the island - and only 2 hotels in Marquesas). Property was as expected and as shown on the website. Lots of character with modern amenities. We had a bungalow facing the ocean and the mountain. The view is simply breathtaking. To enjoy that view during our entire stay from the bed, the desk (while I WFH) and outdoor space/balcony was a real treat and highlight of our mornings and evenings. Meals were delicious, breakfast was a typical European continental breakfast buffet (but with eggs), smaller lunch menu but rotating nightly dinner menu which were delicious. Keep in mind, you are in the middle of nowhere in nature (and an island in the middle of the Pacific) so expect bugs, geckos, insects and roosters! But embrace the environment - none of it was negative and actually added to the charm of being in Marquesas. The staff were excellent and the main reason our stay was enjoyable. Service from the heart. All friendly, accommodating and eager to please. Most spoke English and ones who didn't tried their very best and no issues for us. Thank you to Jean-Jacques, Yoen, Matilde, Nino, Evelyn, Pauline and Henry (excellent guide!) many others who made our stay enjoyable. We will be back!…
This hotel is very comfortable with lovely staff who are very helpful and welcoming. The Manager M. Boillet is very pleasant and extremely helpful. The accomodation is in keeping with the island and has everything one could need as well as sweeping sea views and an infinity pool which looks out over the bay. The meals are very good and service is all one could want.
We visited here after leaving the sister property in Nuku Hiva. This property would be the better of the two in several ways. A particular good thing here is WiFi available everywhere, including in rooms. Also, main dining and pool area was a plus. Service was good , but “ no English “, took its toll on us . If you want off the beaten path, and isolate this is your island. Only about two days to do the look around, then it’s time to read , relax and do nothing! Food is fair, with breakfast being sparse and disappointing.
Wonderful lodge, super friendly staff. We stayed in the premium rooms that have a breathtaking view. Given how far the hotel is from anywhere, dinner, was really excellent and I warmly recommend the excursions. This was one of our most memorable stays in French Polynesia.
We stayed at this lodge for five nights. It was like landing into a great park. We had the mountain view with partly bay view. It was just stunning. The bungalow was quite spacious. Have you been to the Pearl Lodge in Nuku Hiva you will find many similarities. For example the roosters, if they were driving you crazy at Nuku Hiva they were driving you mad here. The cleaning was not always to our satisfaction; sink was obstructed, towels, toilet paper and products were not filled up every day. Service was good but it was to our disadvantage not to be French speaking. The pool area was very nice. We were only unlucky to stay there a Sunday when it was brunch day and play day for a bunch of kids. They did not pay much attention or respect to other guests unfortunately. But we had more luck later on and could relax more. The owner and Manager Monsieur Jean-Jacques picked us up at the airport and his English was very good. He also took a round at the tables at dinner every night to see how we were doing and gave us some necessary information, very appreciated! The breakfast was variating from day to day. The fresh fruit was not always ripen and the scrambled eggs were thin. Dinner could have had a more local touch as we knew for example wild boar was frequent at the island. Our last night at the lodges was a real surprise, a good one, it was the buffet night with traditional song and dance. It was not advertised for us in advance. But we enjoyed the entertainment and the buffet very much, especially the raw tuna an poussin cru. The incredibly cute kitten was a real highlight at every meal and hopefully guests after us will look after him/ her too. We participated in two of the excursions arranged via the hotel. The guide Henry (Heimata) was just fantastic. He turned out to have many skills, how to survive in the jungle, playing the ukulele, telling good stories and finding the sweetest mangos. The lunch included for the tiki tour at Marie-Antoinette was some of the best meals we ever had in French Polynesia so far: poisson cru, wild boar, goat among others. The hiking tour with swimming was also very good. We were provided with very nice chicken baguettes and ham sandwich from the hotel. Our last day we took the free shuttle to the village to visit the cemetery and the museum of Paul Gauguin. Other than that there were not really much to see here. All in all we would recommend anyone visiting Hiva Oa to stay here and interact to make the most out of it. …
We spent four nights in this 3 star lodge / hotel as this is the only hotel on the island we had fairly low expectations , how wrong were we ,although this is not a particularly luxurious property it more than makes up for that in charm ,atmosphere and service .The checkin was reasonably efficient and included a complimentary pick up and drop off to the airport .The rooms are independent chalets in a Polynesian style - a lot of Rafia and timber - and are set in attractive and well manicured gardens and in our case overlooking the mountains and the ocean. The chalet(number 7) was spacious with a balcony and was reasonably equipped . Sleep quality was very good in a large bed with well functioning air con as well as a ceiling fan.The bathroom was adequate with an effective shower ,medium quality toiletries and towels .The chalet and indeed the whole property is very quiet and tranquil, but the island does have a large population of chickens including roosters so you may hear the dawn chorus in stereo from about 5am onwards - ear plugs are provided in the room - personally it didn’t bother us nor did I hear anyone complain . We stayed on a room only basis although a half board option is available we ate in the hotel twice once for breakfast and once for dinner ,we felt both were very overpriced especially the breakfast which was very limited the dinner was adequate but nothing more ,the problem is there is not any public transport on the island from the hotel to the village so you are a captive market ,we hired a car and found an excellent restaurant just at the edge of the village which was not any cheaper but offered a much wider choice and huge portions . The hotel staff are just the nicest and most helpful people especially Clara on reception who was perpetually happy to assist whenever necessary. Jean -Jaques the owner was equally very accomdating and even arranged a complimentary lift for us back to the hotel on one evening when we had walked (about 4km )into the village to eat at his competitor in short don’t hesitate this property offers a really great experibce.…
Agree with many of the other reviews -- INCREDIBLE views, nice bungalows, attentive staff, Jean-Jacques and his wife are GREAT hosts ! If you are considering visiting Hiva Oa - do it ! It's a beautiful island, offers ample activities, sparsely populated, with only a "handful" of other tourists (literally) - except on days the cruise ship is in town. I would suggest renting a vehicle and exploring the island a bit on your own. We drove on our own to Ma'ae Lipona to see the giant tikis. The road itself is an adventure, steep, narrow.. with a few whiteknuckle sections for sure, especially along the cliffs over the ocean.,,, but well worth it to see the archaeological sites. While we also loved Nuku Hiva - we felt there was a better overall vibe in Atuona vs. the main village of Nuku Hiva (Taiohue). The people are friendly, and definitely appreciative of the tourists that do make the long trip to this wonderful place. One note: while we expected the internet to be slow..... it was beyond slow to almost non-existent for long stretches... but maybe that not entirely a bad thing. :o)…
