Travelers' Choice
No picture of Machu Picchu can prepare you for seeing it with your own eyes. Perched high in the Andes, it is one of few places in the world that can be described as truly unmissable. It’s on everyone’s travel wish list, attracting a million visitors each year. But there’s only one way to see it in style: by staying at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. When we say we’re one of a kind, we mean it. Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel that sits at the entrance of the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. For years we have been the unofficial gateway to the Inca world, inviting our guests to explore with unrivalled access and expert guidance. While most visitors to the citadel endure a winding bus ride from Aguas Calientes, our snug retreat is a few footsteps away. Wake before sunrise and be the first through the gates. The mountains look magnificent emerging from a thick cloak of mist, and Machu Picchu is stunning in solitude. Stop, breathe and soak it all in.

Peru is now the 28th country I’ve visited and I’ve been to many places incredible places in the world but I’ve never felt this compelled to write a review. Traveling in the middle of a pandemic is an odd thing so we ended up being the only ones at our hotel at the Sanctuary Lodge here in Machu Picchu. My best friend and I were getting instruction on how to make the best Pisco Sour by our bartender Elias. It was fascinating learning all of these Peruvian customs and Incan traditions as well as some of their language. The food was so incredible that we wanted to speak to the chefs we asked if they could come out and the two gentlemen’s names were Jaime and Washington. Having these guys come out and share their stories with us with the coolest thing ever and I feel like it was such a unique experience because we were the absolute only ones at the hotel and it was so nice of them to come keep us company. And if getting to know these Peruvian gentleman wasn’t cool enough we got to see us we got to know the most amazing receptionist named Maryory. The night with these truly amazing and kind people was one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It is one thing to travel to incredible places but it is another to get to know the lives of people who are living on the opposite side of the planet. It is truly an evening I will never forget and I will never forget their kindness towards me and my best friend Jeff. I would Recommend this hotel 10 out of 10 times to anyone not only because of the incredible location next to Machu Picchu but mostly because of the wonderful people that work there. I can’t wait to plan my trip back to say hi to the mini family that we created.

I have had the great fortune to travel and visit quite a few countries over the years. I have never received such extraordinary service form a hotel staff. Maryory, the kind and thoughtful front desk manager took every precaution to ensure our comfort. She walked us around the property, organized cooking classes, and treated us with such kindness. In the restaurant we had Alias and Josue who attended to our every need. Food, drinks, more drinks and extra drinks. These gentlemen waited on us hand and foot and were so polite and thoughtful in every interaction. We had the special privilege of also meeting the kitchen staff. During this weird time of COVID while no one was at the hotel except us, Jaime, Washington and Walter came out to greet us. We thanked them for the wonderful meals they prepared and also got to spend a few quality moments with them chatting and getting to know them a bit. All of these friendly, kind, sweet, humble, caring individuals made our trip one to remember forever. I can not recommend this hotel and this staff enough. Thank you to everyone for making our trip unforgettable.

As stated with the name, this hotel welcomed us into the sanctuary that is located right beside the majestic renown Machu Picchu; one of the wonders of this world. What we highly recommend is everything about this place. The service is absolutely excellent from the time that you enter, Michael, Marjorie, Geovani, Josue will treated you like royalty. At the entrance You see hummingbirds in a sanctuary plus a beautiful handwork of wood metal and rock. The restaurant Tampu is above the stars it is given because of its exceptional Peruvian and fusion cuisine. In keeping with the service whatever you asked for you get, even what is not on the menu. The hotel staff will treat you in that kind of elevated status as you move around and avail yourself of the facilities like the garden, terraces, the nature paths thru the Herb gardens, which are used by the kitchen season your food. It was awesome to see the sue-chefs picking the herbs for our dinner. the rooms are petite beautiful cozy sanctuaries as the name implies. As you step out on your privilege terrace into the gardens it’s only a deep breath is able to describe the feeling as words can not. We love this place and all the feeling, emotion, and service we experienced.

We were lucky to be able to go to Machu Picchu after the recent protests and the fact that it was basically just opened up two days before we were scheduled to go in. The hotel did a great job answering my questions about a potential cancellation that could have happened if the protests would have continued. We received a text the day of our arrival alerting us that it was raining in Aguas Calientes. I also got a call to ask if I was in the train already (I was). We were received in the bus station at around 3 pm by Rocío who was lovely. The weather was clearing up and looking beautiful. When we got to the hotel, the staff gave us two lemonades (choice of hot or cold beverage) that were delicious. They checked us in and we went to our room. A beautiful room with what I think was the best view out of any hotel I've been in. The food was really good. I tried the alpaca, the quinoa, and the ceviche. I liked the alpaca the most. The breakfast was delicious. The chicharrón was excellent. The juices were really good and the breads were the best. The jams were made right there. It was all made to order as buffets are not allowed due to covid-19 restrictions. Spa services were not available but there were only 3 rooms occupied total so we basically just had the hotel to ourselves. The pisco & papas were really good. I got to make a pisco sour and eat delicious potatoes.
