We spent three days at penascal surf hotel, where we were very warmly welcomed by Antonio and his family. We stayed at the beautiful apartment in the ground floor, with a direct view to the sea and a bit terrace. We enjoyed wonderful ceviche prepared by Antonio's wife from fish that Antonio bought from fishermen that same morning. We took some strolls around the village, enjoyed the juices in the market and the great mood of Peruvians all over the street watching their national team at the football world cup. we did not choose the best of times for our stay because we were there in the winter time, so we felt rather cold - but for the warm season we would definitely recomment a stay - and have a try at surfing! Antonio is a patient teacher :-)

Peñascal Surf Hotel is a beautiful small hotel in San Bartolo (a taxi ride from Lima). The rooms are immaculate and the communal area is tastefully decorated and looks out onto an ocean facing patio. If you surf, there is an excellent range of boards and wetsuits, plus Antonio (the owner) is an expert surf coach. There is a choice of 4 breaks (beginner to advanced) with great waves. For non-surfers the sandy beach provides a great viewing/sunbathing spot. Breakfast is included and is delicious (coffee, fruit, eggs and hot bread). We ate ours on the patio watching the early morning surfers every day.

San Bartolo was a lovely, friendly, safe town although there are some issues with garbage. There are always waves, at anytime of day. We are beginners and had fun, but I am glad that it was not my first time ever because the rocks were intimidating. Antonio is the nicest. He rented us equipment, took us surfing, helped us with Spanish and helped us with transportation to and from Lima. The hotel is beautiful, clean and in the absolute most amazing location!

Room Tip: We had a room with a sliding door onto the patio that faced the ocean. We could hear the waves...

We did a 6 day surf week in San Bartolo and it was perfect! For the first 3 days we were the only ones in the whole appartment, Antonio and Fiorela are amazing and the food was delicious - everyday tipical peruvian food (and always more than we could eat). We had one surflesson a day just us two with Antonio and Chino, in the afternoon we could surf on our own, but Antonio always brought our boards to the beach even though it is very near or he showed us surfing beaches near by.

The room was clean and tidy. The food is excellent, Fiotella is an excellent cook! The village was very quiet as it was the low season. A great 1st stop of our Peru trip! Consistent spot for surfing left and right waves, be careful of the urchins!
