We had a fantastic stay. Room was beautiful and spacious with large windows into the woods and garden. The whole teritory is set up beautifuly with attentive staff. Food was incredibly good - cooked fresh, tasted like home cooked mum's food, healthy and not greasy, delicious deserts, home baked bread. We were congratulated on our honey moon with free wine and chocolate heart shaped cakes! Mauricio was a great guide - bird whisperer! We still can't understand how he remembers and recognises all the birds just from sound and once seeing a glimpse of a bird is able to identify it straight away. Magic. He even managed to find for us Toucan Barbet within four days of our stay. The number of birds we saw was incredible. Plus some crazy insects/caterpillars, also agouti, basiliscus etc. Reserve area is beautiful. We had a proper 'cat days' holiday - sleep in incredibly comfortable large bed, go for a 6am bird watching walk (after coffee and cake), have delicious breakfast, go for another walk, have delicious lunch, nap around, afternoon walk, delicious dinner, evening walk. Delicious coffee 4 rimes a day! Isabel (reserve co-founder family) looked after us and was immensely helpful at finding the best and safest way of getting to the airport during national protests and road blockages. Everything was taken care of and we just had to rest and not worry about anything else. Overall it's been Spa for soul. We already missing Maquipucuna. We also feel like with our stay we contributed towards a good cause: preserving and cherishing nature - Maquipucuna seems to have contributed significantly to the recovery of cloud forest and rescued surrounding areas from plantations and hunting.

Maquipucuna is a diamond in the rough. It's otherworldly in the sense that it places you in the heart of an untamed and mighty forest ecosystem, while making you feel so at home that you forget your visiting. I spent a week there, and leaving was almost painful because of how much I had grown to love this amazing place and all the wonderful people there. Go there and be changed for the better. I promise you wont regret it. We sure don't!

We stayed 4 nights at Maquipucuna in the Riverside room. We are so thankful we chose to stay at Maquipucuna, having considered 2 other lodges. This reserve is amazing! Located in the cloud forest, surrounded by wildlife & birds. Their dedication to conservation & preservation is inspiring. They are also committed to ensuring their guests are comfortable, happy & gaining the best experiences they wish for. Isabella was charming & friendly. Our guide was engaging, knowledgeable & spoke good English. All the staff were very pleasant & helpful, nothing was too much trouble to make our stay the success it was. The food provided here was the best we had throughout our stay in Ecuador! Thankyou to you all, we would love to return one day & see the bears! Mike&Mandy Cooke

I went as a part of my travel j-term and this was an awesome ecological experience. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, accommodating, and supportive. We only spent the day there, but we had great food, an awesome and informative tour, and a lovely swim in the river. Would recommend to anyone!

Spent the day here hiking along with a guide, saw amazing scenery, greenery, and animals. The guide was excellent and pointed out a number of things I would have missed and explained the ecological history of the reserve. Rubber boots are provided for hiking so you don't have to worry about cleaning your own hiking boots after. Lunch was delicious, and they were able to cater to the different dietary restrictions of my group with no problem (vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.). The ecolodge was clean and beautifully maintained. I'd love to return and spend a week here enjoying the calm! Make sure to ask about the gin they have for sale as well!

This experience was amazing. The lodge was beautiful and the staff was knowledgeable, spoke amazing English, and made our time very enjoyable. The food they made was also delicious and the rooms were so perfect for a group visit. The showers had warm water, there was wifi, and a library for all of our identification needs. The grounds and the reserve was amazing. We had a night walk and an early morning birding. These experiences gave us a look at night critters and some tropical, beautiful birds. This place was such a treat and an amazing lodge.

Room Tip: The road into the reserve is quite bumpy and long. Something with 4-wheel drive may be helpful

Beautiful setting in the cloud forest. We drove out form Quito out just for a hike and lunch. The setting is spectacular, and lodge very cozy and blends perfectly into the landscape. Guides were great at spotting animals for us - many birds, insects, and an armadillo (it wasn't spotted bear season unfortunately).

Your visit to Maquipucuna is a much-deserved contribution to preservation, in support of the commendable work the owners and staff are doing at this ecolodge. We had only 1 night and our room was basic but we were fine with that, as it was comfortable, clean, and we knew we were coming here to be outside in nature, not lounging in our room. The eating area was lovely, surrounded by lush plants and a constant stream of hummingbirds, the food was very good, and the staff were excellent. The variety of bird life is incredible, especially with the expertise of our guide, Mauricio, who was an expert at spotting the birds, within the immediate surroundings of the lodge, as well as on our nature walks. Yes, we "came to see the bears", but we also knew that it was up to the bears if they wanted to be seen! The closest we got to seeing them was fresh bear droppings and claw marks on the trees. This didn't take anything away from our experience, as Mauricio did a wonderful job of showing us everything else this beautiful spot in nature had to offer. Birds, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, snails, plant life, and lots of interesting information on the ecosystem in general. It also felt good to know that our visit is helping in some small way to preserve the forest and its fauna and flora. Thank you, Maquipucuna, we will be back one day!
