Spent the day here hiking along with a guide, saw amazing scenery, greenery, and animals. The guide was excellent and pointed out a number of things I would have missed and explained the ecological history of the reserve. Rubber boots are provided for hiking so you don't have to worry about cleaning your own hiking boots after. Lunch was delicious, and they were able to cater to the different dietary restrictions of my group with no problem (vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.). The ecolodge was clean and beautifully maintained. I'd love to return and spend a week here enjoying the calm!

Make sure to ask about the gin they have for sale as well!

If going to bed (or at least your cabin) at 7:30 and going out at 6:15 for a bird hike is your cup of tea, this is your place! We were the only guests for two of our three nights stay, and it got a bit lonely. There were some students/researchers about who mostly kept to themselves. The riverside room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Not quiet—the stream below was roaring! The staff treated us royally. The meals were absolutely wonderful Ecuadorian home cooking, and our naturalist guide, Arcenio, was an expert in spotting birds and explaining flora and fauna. No need for an iPhone, he could call the birds naturally! He was a kind gentleman who acted as our host and guide, with at least two bird walks a day and more if we wished! We were lucky to have him all to ourselves for all but one hike. We expected there to be a bar, but the very obliging Nisandro could only come up with beer or white wine. We had an excellent driver, Angel, provided by Maquipucuna, to pick us up at the airport hotel and to take us on a day trip to Mindo, and deliver us back to Quito. He was a careful driver and also became a friend. Maquipucuna has its own organic garden and its own shade grown organic coffee—the fruit and vegetables, juices at breakfast, coffee and meals could not be beat! WiFi spotty at best. Most majestic thunderstorm I’ve ever experienced with attendant power outage and fears of flash flood! Told next day that this was pretty normal up there. I think we must have been there off season, but it appeared others were coming in for the weekend. The drive from Quito, the rural environment, and the local people we came in contact with were a wonderful introduction to the Cloud Forest and beautiful Ecuador.

This lodge and the cloud forest reserve that surrounds it offer the rare opportunity to be near the birds, butterflies and plants that only occur in a cloud forest setting. We visited in early June 2021 and were the only visitors there. Our excellent guide, Arsenio, loved his job of pointing out critters and explaining the plants life. He carried a spotting scope so we could see the birds better and we saw many new species. He led us on hikes through the forest and pointed out exotic trees, leaf-cutter ants and every hue of butterfly.
At dinner time, always in an open seating area, we shared the space with hummingbirds who came for the honey water situated a mere 8 feet away. Awesome! The food we were served was absolutely delicious and often made with ingredients that grew nearby. Our hostess, Isabel, was so knowledgeable about the insects and the history of this reserve. It used to be a plantation of crops and now, 20 years later, it has once again become a natural wilderness.
Our cabin was large and had views out to the river and forest. Night walks were full of surprises and always fun. The lodge and reserve are located about 2 hours from Quito. We highly recommend this cloud forest lodge and its many hiking trails (appropriate for all abilities).

We spent 4 nights and 5 days in the Maquipucuna reserve.
It was an incredible experience that I would recommend to anyone travelling to Ecuador. Isabelle is a great advisor and runs the lodge with a masterful hand.

It is an animal paradise, over 5 days we saw over 60 species of birds including quetzal, toucans, trogons, hawks etc. We also observed various mammals. The marked trails are ideal to discover the whole reserve. And the guides are of an irreproachable quality, quality material was lent to us to make the observations of animals unforgettable.

Several activities are organised every day like bird watching and night walk and included in the price of the stay.
I advise you to stay at least 3 nights, that will allow you to discover a large part of the reserve and to taste a multitude of delicious meals prepared by the staff of Maquipucuna.

Thanks again Isabelle for this great stay, we will remember it for a long time!

I cannot rave about the Maquipucuna reserve and ecolodge enough! I went on a study abroad to study the insects of the ecuadorian cloud forest, and had such a beautiful experience staying here! The lodge makes you feel right at home with the cozy bedrooms, no outside-shoe policy, open air lounging areas, large shared dining table, and the home cooked delicious meals. I was not expecting to eat so excellently before I arrived, but wow was I surprised. Their chiefs are so talented; there was not a single meal I was disapointed with, and I got to try so many new fruits and ecuadorian dishes! They were beyond accomidating and took my classmate's food allergies VERY seriously. But, of course, my favorite part was the biodiversity we got to see! We saw so many spectacular and colorful plant and animal species, many that could be seen from the conventience of the lodge (SO MANY HUMMINGBIRDS). The hiking trails were amazing and perfectly challenging- most of my days were spent deep in the mountainous jungle on them. I am already planning a return trip.

My spouse and I took this trip even though we are not hikers. Isabel greeted us and made us comfortable. The next morning we took an amazing birdwatching adventure after a cup of coffee and before lunch we decided to have our morning guide, Ascencio, take us to the preserve’s waterfall. What started as a research preserve with humble beginnings has turned into an educational and yet relaxing place to enjoy nature. I highly recommend any nature lover to visit. The family who run this are really trying to
preserve pristine Ecuadorian wildlife. They even went out of the way to ensure we had vegan meals, which are difficult to find outside of Quito. Everyone wore masks to stay safe and healthy.

My family of four visited Maquipucuna for two nights with another family. Each family of four was very nicely accommodated in neighboring rooms with private baths, hammocks outside, and beautiful views of the surrounding hills. Mauricio acted as our host and nature guide. As host, he oversaw the preparation of our freshly cooked meals, all of which were excellent, and was always available if anything was needed. As a guide, he allowed us to do as much or as little as we wanted. We were anxious to see as much as possible during our short stay and Mauricio took us on several amazing
hikes, including night hikes both nights of our stay. We saw an incredible diversity of birds (our primary goal), kinkajous, an olingo, and many reptiles and insects. I’d highly recommend Maquipucuna lodge for anyone wanting to visit the cloud forests near Quito.

Maquipucuna is extraordinary, the forest regeneration only started about 35 yrs ago and what they have achieved is nothing short of a miracle. I saw over 30 different species of birds on their bird watching tour, including 3 different species of toucan. The guide, mauricio, has an in depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna and was flexible, very helpful and allowed me to set my own pace while hiking,
as were all the staff. The food was great! 3 big meals a day. Our ayulla bungalow was comfortable, spacious and the wild life was all around us. For any wildlife lover maquipucuna is an absolute treasure.

This experience was amazing. The lodge was beautiful and the staff was knowledgeable, spoke amazing English, and made our time very enjoyable. The food they made was also delicious and the rooms were so perfect for a group visit. The showers had warm water, there was wifi, and a library for all of our identification needs. The grounds and the reserve was amazing. We had a night walk and an early morning birding. These experiences gave us a look at night critters and some tropical, beautiful birds. This place was such a treat and an amazing lodge.

My family (including 5 & 8 year old girls) had a fantastic three night visit to Maquipucuna. The setting is incredible - in the cloud forest along a river. The owners and staff were very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. One of our guides, Mauricio, could spot birds seemingly out of nowhere. The owners took us on personalized night hikes to see owls, frogs, crazy looking (but not harmful) insects. The food is varied and delicious with Ecuadorean elements.

The shared lodge areas are comfortable and relaxing. The family cabin is a bit more rustic, but private and comfortable for city folks like us. Our kids loved the hammocks.

Would highly recommend as a destination or a visit from Quito. The best part is that all profits and income goes towards cloud forest protection and expansion. Have a great vacation and put your money to good use - what could be better?

We didn't see bears in March but were told that September is the best time because the fruit that they love ripens at that time.

Sure you could. Make sure you get a car with clearance-which will be recomended for most Ecuadorian roads anyway.
