This is clearly the most luxurious hotel in Quito & every part of it -- from the staff, to the decor, to the food, to the location -- is top notch! I could not have picked a better place to stay to start off my trip in Ecuador. I stayed in a beautiful room overlooking the square and the windows in the main room must be double-pane because I took a nap and closed the door to the bathroom (which I believe has only single-pane windows) and slept like a baby. The room is gorgeous and the beds/pillows extremely comfortable. The hotel is an old historic mansion and it definitely feels like it. I enjoyed a cocktail and tapas at happy hour on the rooftop and although pricey, it was some of my favorite food from my entire 2 week trip in Ecuador. The complimentary breakfast is a nice touch (basic items but they were good). Everyone that works there is extremely helpful, pleasant, and always smiling. I'd definitely recommend this place and compare it to a "Four Seasons" type brand & experience -- yes, it's expensive, but less expensive than staying at a Four Seasons or similar.

A beautifully maintained and renovated old hotel in a great position in the old town of Quito. The service was faultless but the price for an average sized room including breakfast was very expensive for accommodation in Quito. The breakfast was also very good.

As a first-time visitor to Ecuador, I couldn't have been happier with my stay at Casa Gangotena. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable experience. Their attention to detail was remarkable—I felt like my room was tidied up every time I stepped out, which made my stay feel truly luxurious. Lived up to expectations, and more! The warm reception and welcome drink was a great start after a long travelling day and drive from the airport (45 mins on a public holiday evening).

We booked a junior suite with balcony, although the weather was such that we didn’t use the balcony in our two night stay, it gave a good size room and amenities and great view through the trees. We took advantage of the pleasant evening on arrival to enjoy the rooftop terrace with fantastic all around views from its prime location in the Old Town. The Tapis was perfect for us and service friendly including agreeing to open a bottle of bubbly for us to use over the two nights.

Food was very good throughout, breakfast, dinner and the occassional snacks. Similarly, the staff, without exception, were friendly and efficient.

No hesitation in recommending.

The hotel is part of the Relais & Chateaux group. The group is known for having strict standards for a hotel to be part of the brand. Offering “exquisite” haute cuisine, as well as luxurious facilities.
I booked through my Amex Platinum Fine Hotels offers and was upgraded from the Deluxe room, to a balcony junior suite. I truly enjoyed the balcony with a patio table to dine and/or sit. I actually worked out there! The room didn’t have a desk for my electronics so I had to use the ledge for electronics on the wall, and one side of the bed had an extension cord for me to plug into as well but not nearly enough space, hence using the ledge on the wall. With 2 people staying, there really needs to be the option of an extension cord on both sides of the bed since there is no desk.
The bed was a little firm for my liking and the bedding could have been softer. But a beautiful room nonetheless.
the bathroom was all marble and had a nice soaking tub and large separate shower, but only 1 sink with a small amount of sink space. The ledge above the sink was helpful and there was room under the sink for storage. A marble ledge under the stunning stained glass window was also a great place to store toiletry bags.
I received a lovely plate of fruit with a nice note from hotel staff, welcoming me to the hotel.
Ample closet space in the large entertainment center.
Now the food, the breakfast buffet was wonderful and staff in the restaurant efficient. Room service food was less than sub-par and unremarkable.
Do go to the rooftop for dinner, happy hour, snacks, and views! Absolutely stunning at night. The whole hotel is simply gorgeous! And worth the visit to Quito!

We recently stayed at Casa Gangotena and overall had a great experience. The hotel is beautifully restored, full of historic charm, and located in the heart of Quito’s old town—perfect for exploring the city. The rooftop bar is a lovely spot to relax with great views, and breakfast was very good, with a mix of buffet options and made-to-order dishes like Eggs Benedict and avocado toast.

Service was attentive, and while it was good, it was missing the extra level of refinement we’ve come to expect from Relais & Châteaux properties. Small details that would elevate the experience just weren’t quite there.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was large and well-appointed but could benefit from better lighting at the vanity, additional lighting in the shower, more vanity space, and added storage under the window.

While Casa Gangotena is undoubtedly the best place to stay in Quito, the overall experience feels expensive for what it is. It’s a beautiful hotel with a great location, but at this price point, we expected a bit more in terms of amenities and attention to detail.

Would we stay here again? Yes—but with the understanding that you’re paying a premium primarily for the location and historic charm rather than an ultra-luxurious experience.

Located in the central part of Quito, the hotel appears to be a favorite of the city’s well-to-do and is a popular socializing/special occasion destination. Keep this in mind as booking far in advance will yield the best room options. We found the rooms on the first floor that faced the main square had noise issues as the hallways transmitted sounds too efficiently. If you prefer a quiet location, request an upper floor room that fronts the internal courtyard or a suite that is at the far ends of the hotel. The rooms are spacious, tasteful, and colonial in style. We stayed in three different rooms due to passing back and forth during our Ecuador adventure. Some had a combined shower/bath and the bathtub rim was very high, making it quite a step up and out to exit. Unless you prefer a bath to a shower, request a room with a separate shower. I would also recommend being careful when using the elevator as the doors can close very abruptly. The best aspect of the hotel is the topnotch staff. They are very professional, efficient, and when you request something, they respond promptly. When we asked for someone to retrieve our bags at 3am, the porter arrived at the door in three minutes! We also recommend the chocolate tasting offered by the hotel. You’ll learn some interesting chocolate facts and how Quitoans enjoy a very unique version of hot chocolate.

This is a very nice, classy place. The staff is excellent and seems to anticipate your every wish. They have an excellent restaurant and a bar with imaginative cocktails. The beds are comfortable and the towels fluffy. I would have given them 5 stars, but for a few tiny details that I feel are nonetheless worth mentioning. A hotel of this caliber, in this day and age, should be aware that people want to charge their devices. We stayed in 3 different rooms on 3 occasions and I had to move bedside tables etc. to find an outlet. I also feel they are stingy with the bottled water in a city where foreigners are advised not to drink the water.

The Casa Gangotena is one of the nicest small boutique hotels I have ever stayed in. First, the Staff are fabulous. No request from Bandages to a Bic lighter, to liquor service on the roof terrace, which overlooks Plaza de San Francisco and, in the distance, the highest peak in the Andes closest to Quito. Quito is at 8,000+ feet, the peak is over 12,000 ft.

At 8,000 feet I did not expect altitude sickness ( I had taken Diamox)
and had no trouble walking. Think of San Francisco, but with the streets climbing more gradually and the tops of the hills not as high.

The room is a nice size with a large bathroom. In order to bathe/shower you need to step over a 2 foot high bathtub side. Room service menu is very small. Best to dine at the restaurant, if you can.

Also the hotel is not handicap friendly and the elevators are tiny—3 people only. While we are old, we needed help from the staff going up and down stairs without handrails.

The salon did a beautiful job on my pedicure, but did a terrible job blow drying Susan’s short thin hair (although she said it was one of the great head shampoos and scalp massage she had ever had.

There are 2 places to smoke cigars, in the back patio garden or on the rooftop terrace. I highly recommend the rooftop if it’s not too cold out rainy (although there is a large umbrella covering 2 of the three tables that are up there and the view cannot be matched.

The Restaurant at Casa Gangotena is superb. For more information on the restaurant, see my review on Open Table. The breakfast buffet was disappointing. The fruit was underripe and the juices, other than the Orange were sour or bitter, as if they had been made with not quite ripe fruit.

The a la carte has eggs to order and the omelette was good but the Ecuadorian eggs benedict were excellent.
