#5 of 127 B&Bs / Inns in Valparaiso
Travelers' Choice
South America's first container hotel (25 containers were upcycled to form the 21 rooms, reception + breakfast area). Also the first urban winery in the history of Valparaiso and the first in Chile which allows tourists and hotel guests to taste directly from the barrels with the winemaker. Guests can also participate in winemaking activities during harvest (April, May and the first half of June). We soon hope to open the tasting room, wine shop and wine bar (as soon as alcohol licensing is approved).

From seeing it grow in the distance as we neared the property to the moment we departed, our stay at the WineBox was nothing short of a joyful experience in every sense of the word. Like an immersive artscape, the world built within those layered and stacked containers is a kitschy and delightful hipster fever dream. Locally commissioned street art throughout perfectly reflects the visual vibe that has become a hallmark of Valparaiso itself. Our first night, we went up to the rooftop bar for a starter drink, and even though it was closed, we were warmly welcomed in by fabulous owners/designers Grant & Camila, sharing their dinner and their stories. It’s the attention to detail and jaunty irreverence that truly sets this property apart. From the extensive in-room wine selection, the welcome scrabble on the fridge, the cutlery with stamped phrases like “Muerdeme, Lick Me, or Fork You,” to the repurposed tubs and sinks and wine bottle light fixtures the atmosphere is absolute fun. Being a birthday stay, we opted for the Malbec Suite, the double container under the defiant gaze of Foxy Brown with an outdoor balcony and living area that doubles the space and 180 views of all of Valpo.

Interesting and spacious rooms. Loads of outside space. Excellent breakfast. The location is ideal for exploring all of Valparaiso and offers amazing views over the city. Grant, the owner, was really helpful in arranging things for us to do, including a bespoke tour of local vineyards. I'd also strongly recommend the hotel wine tasting! Sam

What can you say about a hotel made out of recycled shipping containers, with one of the best views of the city, owned by a wine loving and making Kiwi - it's fantastic! When I found this place on Tripadvisor I just knew I had to stay there and I am delighted we did. My wife, daughter, son-in-law and I spent three nights here and it was a very good place from which to explore Valparaiso and its surrounds. Breakfast and drinks are served on the patio on top of the hotel with a spectacular view of the city and harbor. I am not sure why others were complaining about the breakfast as it was great. I nice selection including several fresh juices, tea, coffee, eggs, sausages, plantains, broiled tomatoes, yogurt, cereal, breads, cheeses and more. We came early and late and there was alway plenty. The rooms are clean and relatively roomy (you could pack a lot of stuff in a container). The bed is a little tight in that the head and one side are up against the wall and the bathroom is single use only, but no big deal. You do not hear noise from the container next to you, but you do hear people talking outside your room as they go up the stairs and the dogs at night can really get into howling (but that is an issue anywhere in Valparaiso). The hotel is on the side of a hill. Valparaiso is a city meant to be explored on foot so expect some uphill and downhill walking. If you get tired you can always get an Uber and they are cheap. You can get from one side of town to the other for only a few dollars - it is about $3 to get from the tourist section to the Winebox. The two ladies at the front desk were very friendly and extremely helpful. If you get a chance talk to Grant, the owner. Over some beer and wine one night we got a chance to ask him about building the place and his experiences - he is an interesting guy. If you are looking for a unique experience and a great place from which to explore Valparaiso, then give he Winebox a try.

We really like the environmentally friendly concept. The location is also good, offering great views of the city. However when it comes to service, the hotel is not top-notch. Breakfast is served not before 8:30 h, and even then not everything is ready. The check-in was very nice though. The rooms are great, but instead of a kitchen it would have made more sense to offer some tea and coffee making facilities. The neighborhood is very noisy, especially the dogs at night, plus you hear everything in your room, when guests come home late. Overall we can still recommend the hotel, but they should do something about the breakfast.

Hey guys, not too sure what happened with breakfast as we take it really seriously and currently have the highest rated breakfast in the city (out of 450+ hotels) on booking.com (9.2 out of 10). Also every room has an electric kettle plus a selecion of 8 different teas and instant coffee and also an Italian stovetop for those who are travelling with their own coffee beans (both percolated and expresso coffee is available at breakfast). The neighbourhood is actually super quiet within a Valparaiso context (it is super residential and thus there are no bars or clubs nearby to keep you up). That said, Valparaiso is a city with 40,000 stray dogs and there's not much we can do about that. If you are a light sleeper you should probably be travelling with earplugs anywhere you go in Latin America........ In any case we're glad you can still recommend the hotel and we hope to see you again. Cheers!

At the winebox your room is an old shipping container that has been artfully refashioned as a hotel room. And it comes with four bottles of Chilean wine that you might be interested in buying. The owner knows his wines and does tastings on the rooftop, which are loads of fun. He has worked in the wine business for years, starting as s native New Zealander in Sauvignon blanc country then moving to Chile. The rooftop view is fantastic. You can see the whole city and ocean. They put on a nice breakfast spread but after that, they only make pizzas so you have to eat elsewhere for lunch and dinner. They recommended the nearby et spiritu sancto which was fantastic. They also will do wine tours if you book in advance. Uber makes it easy to get anywhere so don’t be put off by the location, high above the city. Totally worth it.
