Wonderful hotel in a great neighborhood in Santiago! Everyone was so kind and helpful to us. We were lucky enough that our room was ready early for us, and we upgraded to a room with more space and a private balcony. Breakfast included delicious fresh fruit, toasts, cakes, and eggs made to order. They do a wine social hour everyday from 5-6pm which was a great way to meet other visitors and swap information. We loved our stay! We look forward to returning in the future!
I'm shocked at some of the negative reviews. We just spent 5 nights in the hotel and had a great experience (and this is two well-traveled spoiled Americans!). The hotel is quaint and well-appointed, the rooms are clean and have all amenities, and the staff has been very courteous to us. Their breakfasts are yummy and the location is great. To address some of the points I read about in reviews: - The staff was extremely courteous. Our originally booked hotel decided not to open for the season and neglected to tell us, so there we are, at 11 pm in a strange country without accommodations. Lucky for us, Castillo Rojo was very close and we tried our luck. The staff accommodated us, offered us some lodging options and we decided to stay in the higher priced room until it was no longer available due to prior reservations, and move out to the smaller room after that. Great. - The staff did help us with our luggage upstairs even thought it was super late. No issues. Didn't even have to ask (we did have to call down and ask of them to come up and help us when we moved out, but that's normal) - Cleaning - yes, there is a big sign in plain English that is very visible in the room that says "if you need your room to be cleaned, just let us know". You can't really miss it. The hotel is conservation conscious (biodegradable everything, vintage decorations, lovingly restored furniture), so they do with cleaning what all hotels are now doing with towels - we will be happy to accommodate, just let us know. Honestly, my husband and I were happy that strangers enter our room only by invitation. But we find turn down services in hotels a bit intrusive. So, no problem, we called when we needed cleaning, which was exactly one time during our stay between two rooms. We are two adults who can keep the space straight for a couple days at a time. But they had no issues coming up and cleaning our room when called. - Their breakfasts are yummy. The menu offers complete meals and has quite a variety. It's not a full service restaurant (and a free breakfast), so them not accepting substitutes is quite reasonable. Yes, they did charge for a side of bacon that my husband wanted with every meal, but they should, really... it wasn't that much and we were happy to pay. The food was very good. Honestly, after making our initial picks we stayed with them for the duration of our stay (dulce de leche pancakes and avocado toast). Yummy! - The breakfast menu does say that it's 2 cups of coffee, but I think it's more a matter of clearing tables quicker than anything else. Coffee (great coffee) is FREE 24/7 in the 2nd floor lounge (which I highly recommend to hang out in, it's fabulous). I took advantage of it and got a cup of coffee every morning to wake up and enjoy the view from the balcony. We have not tried to ask for a 3rd cup, but I can't imagine it's a problem. - We stayed in rooms 5 and 14 during out stay. If you are to book the hotel, I highly recommend room 5 - it's spacious, well decorated and has a balcony with furniture that overlooks the courtyard. I really, really enjoyed drinking my coffee there. A great space! Room 14 is a small, typical room on the last floor (my husband called it "Les Miserables Quarters" LOL), is well furnished and great, but no balcony and much smaller.... and cheaper. - The only suggestion I would make for a hotel is to fix the shower head in room 5 for better water pressure. It was fine enough, but when we saw 'what could be' when we moved to 14, improvement is possible. Great showers. This hotel is in a very, very fun and safe area. We loved staying there. And, of course, it's cute as a button. Santiago is such a fun town, hope people can focus on fun and not small issues that can be easily solved by either paying attention to the rules or asking! Highly recommend!…
don't book directly with them by whatsapp or phone as they change the rates and try to charge higher fees. I did as i had also some questions but he tried to charge almost 75 % extra! when i mentioned the prices on his website were different and much lower he said he would check it and send the lower amount by email. However he did not reply anymore and changed the rates on the website. Feels strange and not very trustworthy
We stayed on the top (4 th floor). Our room had a king bed, another small space with a chair and robe and the ensuite. Even though the Bella vista area is a busy place with the windows being double glazed and being up high we found it calm and quiet. The interiors if this place have been so well thought out and decorated in a considered, colonial, quirky way. The top floor was a bit of a pain with luggage but the staff will help if you need that . The breakfast was amazing - Diego always was happy to see you , he had almond as an alternative milk for coffee which was great , we ate the avo on brown toast most days , cakes , fresh fruit and jam where also good, there is also a nice bar / tea and coffee area on the second floor - only thing is it would be nice if they offered beer and wine there as we only saw spirits available. Staff were so helpful and there is a nice quiet, safe garden courtyard area in the ground floor.…
A vibrant hotel in a vibrant part of Santiago! Castillo Rojo is within walking distance of many restaurants, as well as the house of the poet Pablo Neruda and the funicular to San Christobal. The rooms are beautifully furnished and the bed was deliciously comfortable!
Spent a Friday night. The room was beautiful, spacious and well furnished in a style befitting the buidling. The bathroom was also spacious and "antique modern". The Bellavista area has an abundance of bars and restaurants. I'd gladly go again, highly recommended.
Wow, what is not to love about this quaint hotel that used to be a castle. It has all the modern amenities but with fantastic architecture and beautiful stone and woodwork. Our room was just lovely, good size with a patio. The best part of this hotel was its staff who went out of their way to welcome us and help us in every way possible. The breakfast was wonderful and the sitting area on the second floor with coffee/tea station was a great place to relax. Barbara, Gustavo and all the staff thank you for a wonderful stay, we’d love to come back!
Castillo Rojo is an oasis of calm and comfort in this busy city. Traditional furnishings and décor are matched by all the modern facilities you might need and the friendly staff go out of their way to be helpful. The rooms are a good size and there is a spacious lounge/bar area to relax. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the Cerro San Cristobal funicular station and the Pablo Neruda house, right in the middle of the Bellavista barrio. This means lots of restaurants and bars within easy reach, although the area is quite seedy and rundown in places. It’s an interesting 20-30 minute walk to Plaza del Armes and the other main sights of downtown. Highly recommended.
Our "premium" room was large and clean, as was the bathroom. (Another double room we saw was very small.) The bed was comfortable, and the wifi worked well. The staff were welcoming and polite. However, it was a long walk up to the fourth floor (no elevator). The hotel wasn't full, so it would have been nice to be on a lower floor. The Castillo Rojo is not really a luxury hotel, and it's definitely not "boutique." It's more of a faded beauty with an old school feel. The photo posted is deceiving. The hotel is no longer bright red, but rather a sun- faded orange. The entrance gate is locked w/ a bicyle U-lock! Every time you enter or leave, a staff member must walk out to unlock the gate. The photos of the interior are accurate. The breakfast choices were so-so, and the coffee was terrible. The hotel is located near Parque Metropolitano (where you can take the Funicular up to the aerial tramway) and is about a 20 min. walk to the center/Plaza de Armas. Our stay was fine, but not great for the cost of the room (which was not cleaned while we were there). Given the many hotel choices in Santiago at this price level, we will probably stay somewhere else next time.…
I’ll start with very poor service and indifferent attitude of everyone working there, going through the lack of room attendance - our room was not cleaned during our visit. And lastly, they put us on the 4th floor without elevator and there is no help to carry to luggage! Breakfast is also very poor and they charge extra for everything. In conclusion, it was truly a poor experience. Never again. It all looked very promising on the web but turned to be one of the worst places I stayed in.
