Tibet Gang-gyan Lhasa Hotel is just off Beijing Road, the main road through Lhasa. There is a quiet courtyard with parking in front of the hotel. It is a short walk into the next street for the Barkhor Street area leading to Jokhang Temple. Potala Palace is a walk of about 20 minutes. There are many restaurants, shops and a shopping centre nearby.
The location is the best bit about the hotel. It is four star in this area but not what many international tourists would expect for 4 stars.
Receptionists spoke simple English and were polite. There is a shop off the foyer which has souvenirs, jewellery, postcards, food and drinks. As expected in a hotel, the prices are high. Safety deposit is available at reception. There was no room safe. Rooms at the back of the hotel are reached down long dark corridors.
The room was of a reasonable size and the en-suite shower room was adequate. The shower produced only a trickle but it was warm. On a cold night the room did not really warm up. Toiletries and snacks are available in the room and clearly priced. There is no free bottled water in the room but there is a kettle and green tea.
Buffet breakfast is just adequate with Western and Chinese options, including butter milk tea. The dining room was cold.
This hotel is a bit shabby, but much what would be expected for a facility which seems to mainly cater for tour groups staying for a few nights only. Functional, safe and central.

I checked-in two times and first one was significantly better than the second. The room is well equipped and nicely designed. Wonderful view of the city and great location of the hotel situated in old part of Lhasa with more character and history. One of the lamps didn't work, but that was OK, the room was well illuminated nonetheless. Now to less exciting part... The second time i checked-in, I was placed in a different room, which had bits of trash like small paper on the floor and even a piece of gum with hair on it. The shower is equipped with no-slip bath rugs curled up in the corner and it is apparent that great amount of hair resides inside ( I did not use it).

Stayed first 3 nights in this hotel and continued for final 1 night in Lhasa after returning from Shitgatse before travelling back to Chengdu.

What I like about this hotel very much is the Strategic location.
15 min walk to Potala Palace to see night view which is amazing beautiful.
It is also surrounded with many restaurants and night market.
Basically we can walk to Jokhang temple and Barkhor Street.

However, I felt the pillow is too soft and the room climate/heater is not comfortable that made me unable to sleep well. The shamppo and body lotion quality is not up to par. Worse is the water cistern not working well for our first 3 nights stay. Luckily we got a different room for the last night stay in Lhasa after Shitgatse trip.

This isn't a 5 star hotel. If you have every been to Katmandu, Lhasa is much like that but only more clean and organized. It's probably one of only a few hotels that will allow foreigners. Each room is supplied with cheap cloth slippers, I would highly suggest you take advantage of this and wear them. They do allow smoking or, at least people were smoking in the lobby and in the rooms because of the smell. They also burn incents throughout the building, I am guessing to cover up the smells. It has western style toilets with a shower. The bedding seemed cleaned but the mattresses where pretty worn out. If you're only going to be there a few nights, then it's doable. I would have a hard time staying there anymore than that. Oh, and there is very little lighting in the hallways, so it's pretty dark (even during the day) in the building.

Water was not going through the basin.
It was quite late but they reluctantly agreed to come up and seemed rude about it. I found rooms extremely cold so they offered me a blanket but then when I moved the second curtains I saw the windows were half open and that was were cold air and mosquitoes were coming in.
The beddings and bedsheet seemed not to have been changed and there was a stale smell from the toilet.
Every time i needed Wi-Fi I had to go downstairs Wi-Fi signal and had to sit there and talk to my family which I could disgusting.
Although they have advertised that Wi-Fi speed is very fast but in reality it is terrible.
Not happy at all with the hotel . It has all the stuff but not kept properly at all. So think before you book and also quite expensive as it shows£50 per night.

At one time a few years ago, it was probably a very nice hotel in Lhasa. Now however it’s not being maintained as well as it should. The hall carpets are worn and same in the rooms. Window latches are faulty and many other small but necessary repairs need to be done.
Breakfast was ok considering the location.
The bedding was also ok.

I booked a 9-days trip to Tibet with Ctrip tour agency, the whole trip was poor organized.
- Dirty sink- dirty toilet, it seems that they don't use detergent at all.
-Hair inside the shower.
-Power cut during i was in the shower
- Flies in the room.
-Dangerous broken switches in the bathroom!
-Dirty towels, it seems that they are not always changing of towels after last guest's check-out.
-Dirty carpet as they never use vacuum cleaner!!
-No complimentary bottled water in the room
-Extremely rude and aggressive hotel staff soon after i complained about the lack of cleanliness!
-No internet connection inside the room however hotel's brochures suggests otherwise.
- Unprecented unhygienic conditions in the kitchen/restaurant. I wasn't willing to put the rest of my journey at risk because of this hotel's hazardous and disgusting hygiene condition therefore i went to a nearby decent bakery were i had a wonderful breakfast.
-Next day i heard from other guests that they experienced upset stomach soon after they had breakfast!!
-The restaurant's staff they are wearing their own clothes as well as heavy jackets on top of them and not proper uniform as in any respected hotel around the world!
-Soon after a quick rain a big water pool is being created just outside hotel's main gate making the hotel totally unaccessible!
I HAVE PHOTOS TO PROVE ALL THE ABOVE!!!

It's a nice hotel. Like in almost all of the chinese hotels I've stayed in, the carpet is a little grody looking, but at least here it's clean. The staff is probably the best part about the hotel. I especially adore the woman who works in the convenience store downstairs. The front desk people are helpful and they all speak decent enough english. The location is very good - it's maybe a 15 minute walk to Potala Palace, but not a big deal. They have blackout shades on the backs of the curtains, and it's very quiet, so you can sleep in as long as you like. the beds are on the hard side, but that goes along with grody carpet. All in all, though, a good experience.

This may not be the best hotel in Lhasa but after four days of travel and some cold uncomfortable experiences it was a welcome and pleasant change. Rooms were well appointed and comfortable. Nice to have walk to wall carpets however the hotel might choose to invest in a vacuum cleaner. Portable heaters are yours for the asking. Central heating is uncommon in Tibet. The western breakfast is anything but. Better to try elsewhere.
Great location in the heart of Tibetan Lhasa and near the temple.

Nice location.
From there you can visit old Lhasa which is just behind.
Yet rooms are old and worn out. The should be refreshed.
Staff very friendly, like all Tibetains!
The area is quiet, even if it's near a main road.

Why type of plug sockets does this hotel have? What kind of adaptor will I need (coming from the UK).
Answer from davagib

I think the sockets might have more than one possibility, but I used my standard 2 flat pin adaptor. it did not do fast charging but charged the phone up over night.
