As I wanted to stay on Lantau Island close to the nature trails, Buddha and Monastery, this was the perfect location as I could walk everywhere. However, it was dirty in the kitchen and shower block. I had cockroaches in my room. Before I arrived I was told to book a taxi from the airport but this proved impossible and they refused to book it for me. Luckily there were 3 taxis to Lantau when I arrived. The staff were pleasant and helpful. They close the hostel at 11pm so had trouble getting them to wait for me but luckily my flight arrived early and made it before 11. It was too expensive for the condition of the hostel.
Room was good and we got it for a good price but there was dead bugs on the floor and also in the hallways! Another downside was the check in time of 4pm - we arrived into Hong Kong at 7am that morning and got to Ngong Ping for 10am when the cable car opened so we had to lug our bags around all day
Considering the standard of the hostel, it's pretty costly, but this is the only accommodation option in Ngong Ping if you want to stay there, so you won't really have a choice otherwise. The climate in Ngong Ping (especially in the off/shoulder seasons) is extremely humid and rainy, so it's near impossible for anything to dry out, everything's perpetually wet, making it quite impossible for it to be clean, need to acknowledge that they've done what they can considering the circumstances.
The staff were nice and super helpfull with transport and activity advice but the hostel is dirty. We had stains on the sheets and pillows. Super thin mattresses, rooms dont get cleaned inbetween guests. Dirty bathrooms smelling of urine. A good clean up would make a huge difference.
Good place to stay with friendly staff. Room was simple and clean as were the bathrooms. It is in a great location in a very relaxing part of Hong Kong. Distance from airport was a bit longer than I thought, about 35 minutes by taxi. Mattresses are quite firm if you’re not used to it, but all in all this was a really good place to stay with helpful staff. My room was modestly priced and I had a window, cool aircon and a fan. It is a short walk to shops and eateries but they do close around 5pm as they cater for the tourists coming on the cable car, so it’s best to have some food on hand or buy your dinner early. Set amongst excellent walking tracks. Hikers can get a bit loud as they tend to be up at various hours but it didn’t bother me much. Would definitely stay again.
