We recently spent 5 weeks at CHI 120 after being relocated to Hong Kong for work.

The layout is excellent : it is one apartment per floor, and a good amount of space (remembering that you are in Hong Kong, so 'space' is a relative thing!). There were 2 of us, plus our 2 dogs, and we felt like we had heaps of space.

The location is excellent : Sheung Wan is a wonderful part of Hong Kong, very authentic, lots of amazing looking local shops all around. Trams, Buses, and the train are all nearby, as are the ferries if you're interested in exploring off the Island.

Mostly what makes CHI 120 so wonderful are the staff : they really do make it a home away from home. CHI 120 is very popular with expats who have been relocated to HK & I can see why! Nothing is too much trouble, the staff are enthusiastic, happy, professional & completely helpful.

I would strongly recommend CHI 120 to any family or friends, especially if you are being relocated here with pets that you wish to keep with you.

We stayed at the CHI residences 120 for a week in February 2012 and overall it suited our needs. The reviewer above has described how the apartment looks like - we thought it was sufficient for our needs even though the kitchen was really tiny and we had to bring it a chair to put things on as there was absolutely no countertop space! The main room was good although we were disappointed by the quality of the balcony doors and windows/doors in general - they looked single-glazed and the doors wouldn't really close fully (they looked a bit old) and so the place was generally quite loud. It wasn't that big of a problem for me since the bedroom is separated by a sliding door from the main room but my husband is sensitive to noise and kept waking up around 6am, which was inconvenient.

There was a nice round table in the corner where we could eat breakfast and we even got to see the Hong Kong marathon down Connaught Road once. The view of Tsimshatsui was superb as well. The bathroom was very convenient and clean and there was lots of space to turn around in the shower. The staff we saw when checking in downstairs were lovely and polite although there was a problem with processing our credit card so we had to go back and forth a couple times and we couldn't get the wifi to work, so had to try out several sets of passwords to finally get it to work.

Location wasn't great - although it seems that it's kind of in the centre, we always had to either walk for 15 min or take the tram (can be quite crowded) to get to the MTR station, which got a bit annoying after awhile. The western market area is interesting though and there are lots of little shops to see, many selling Chinese medicine. There is an ok "western" supermarket about 10 min away where we got some food (the fridge was big!). Overall, we liked it but next time we'd go to one of their quieter/better insulated properties.

Previously stayed at Citadines which is right next door due to Chi 120 was full house. Chi residence chain has been famously good over the years and its add-on especially they are dog-friendly. Firstly please expect this is a apartment with serviced staffs which they are mostly not around or at your service then all good to go. At first we were not very happy about the miscommunication of the charges (it is much more expensive if they charge you daily rate instead of monthly rate) but later on we notice they are good at refreshing their facilities such as washing machines/ dryer and tiny little details such as toiletries. Each apartment occupied one floor and only your door key get to access your floor which is highly secured. Also staffs are super-friendly and helpful. We would love to come back to stay again in the future.

I really want to love this place. Keep that in mind as you read on. There are so many good and… not so good things here that I have mixed feelings about it and cannot give it the wholehearted approval that I wish I could. Instead I will list a few major categories and assess them individually which will give a better picture. Please bear in mind, this is not a standard hotel. It is a serviced apartment so things will be very different and the differences will keep coming up, so you need to manage your expectations accordingly. They don’t have housekeeping on weekends or holidays. While they have rooms for rent on a daily basis, I believe their primary clientele rents by the month. Some people will find this the most amazing place for the price. Some people will cringe at the thought of staying here. I hope my detailed review will help you decide which one you are:

The Good
Space – At 90 square meters, this is the size of at least a junior suite in most true 5 star hotels, and a full suite in most true 4 star properties. You have lots of space, more than most local Hong Kong people who live in apartments half this size. Seriously. There is a nice sized sofa, a full sized desk, a large window seat, and a LOT of storage space. Enough storage space to truly “move in” for a long time. The kitchenette is really enough to prepare three meals a day, and I will discuss this a little more later. Every space is utilized for a drawer, cabinet, or closet. I think the best way to describe the overall style and design is to think “Ikea”.

Location – It seems terrible at first, but the location is actually fantastic. Just one MTR stop away from Sheung Wan (HK/Macau Ferry Terminal), or two stops from Central you are extremely well located. The hotel is an extremely convenient 2-4 minute walk from the Sai Ying Pun station. It seems terrible at first, because quite frankly the area is old and VERY “local” but can actually be a blessing in disguise. Shops and food are cheap and plentiful especially if you like seafood. Just around the corner from the hotel, we had a ridiculous dinner of a whole crab fried with chili and garlic, razor clams, a spicy squid and shrimp dish, golden fried tiger shrimp (king prawn), sweet and sour grouper, and a steamed fish (I think it was a red snapper). Plus 4 glasses of a fantastic lemon tea, and ovaltine, and a beer… for 863 HKD. Like I said, this is a local, residential area. You’re going to mom and pop shops and not paying tourist prices, but you’re also just a few minutes from those tourist areas, if you want to go.

View – As long as you’re not on one of the lowest floors, you have a beautiful view of the harbor and a clear shot of the ICC building. The outside of the window however, was filthy so the view was somewhat obscured. It was still nice however, and if you like watching the ferries go by, you’ll see them constantly going to and fro from Macau (just one MTR stop away from Sheung Wan, remember?).

Extras – FREE HANDY PHONE. Free calls and 3G internet all around HK. Free international calls to 5 countries (I believe they said China, Singapore, India, USA, and Canada?). Lots of other info to make it easier for you to be a tourist, or a temporary local. This can be incredibly convenient for a lot of people who need to be connected. Plus free wifi in the room. Kitchenette… You actually get two electric stoves, a large kitchen sink, a small empty refrigerator, a toaster, a Pacific Coffee capsule coffee machine (with capsules) as well as a standard drip coffee machine, an electric kettle, as well as a variety of pots, pans, dishes, cups, and utensils. Iron and board, hair dryer, pretty much everything you need to actually live here for a while. Remember, it’s a serviced apartment. They also have a DVD player, and you can apparently either borrow or rent DVDs from their management office. I didn’t try though.

Privacy – Both good and bad, but mostly good. Where it shines is the fact that there are only two units per floor, and each unit is serviced by a separate elevator. As some people have indicated, you essentially have a private lift. Your keycard gives your elevator access to only your own floor and the rooftop, and then you have a physical key for the apartment. When the door to the lift opens, you are in a semi-private alcove with just the fire escape and your apartment door. I assume you could get to the other apartment alcove through the fire escape, but I didn’t try. However, I do think the setup inside might be a little too open if you have guests visiting. While I didn’t have a problem with it, the bathroom door is glass. Frosted in the middle, but not the top and bottom, and looks straight at the shower if someone were to peek under (as my children did when mommy was inside). There also isn’t a separate door to the toilet, or anywhere else for that matter. The only door inside the apartment is the one to the bathroom. The sleeping area is not wholly separated from the living area. It’s most likely meant to be an open setup that allows for maximum natural light (hence the glass bathroom doors), but real privacy inside the apartment is non-existent.

The Bad
The doors do not automatically lock. Serviced apartment not hotel, remember. Also, no separate security latch or deadbolt, just a household door lock. The lobby staff and essentially private elevator does provide a second layer of security, but it feels weird.
The lobby – It’s not a hotel lobby because it isn’t a hotel. It’s basically a check in counter, and it’s a bad first impression that might give you second thoughts. Apparently most actual operations are handled on the second floor from the Management Office.

Professionalism/Customer Service – While not terrible, they are obviously not well trained. These are not hospitality professionals. While they were friendly and tried to help, they don’t know much, and constantly refer to printed sheets with the information.

Extras – This time not the good kind of extras…. Extra fees. Anything extra costs money and quite a bit. For instance, just an extra blanket was 100 HKD. What?!? A crib would have been around 150? An extra bed was 440 HKD! In fact, I only inquired about the bed because I was being honest. The policy was that if you had a third adult, you needed to pay for an extra bed. But the staff told me to check the room first to see if it would fit our needs, and we could get a bed later if we still wanted to. I don’t know if they felt it was bothersome, or they were just trying to save me a couple of bucks but I didn’t mind that at all. There’s lots of space in the apartment, and the couch is absolutely long and wide enough to comfortably sleep an average sized adult, but you might as well just buy your own extra blanket if you need one.

The Ugly (or weird)
There is a second door inside the bathroom that leads into a pump room alcove and also to the fire escape. I guess it could be nice for safety, but it just seemed strange. There also isn’t an electric socket in the bathroom for some reason. You will have to dry your hair outside.

Cleanliness – Ah… this is just so important and it is simply not up to a “4 star hotel” standards. Because, it’s not a hotel, right? Perhaps we were simply unlucky, and it also depends on your personal standards, but to me the cleanliness was perhaps at the level of a 2-3 star hotel or a motel? The level is probably acceptable to many, but this is definitely the dealbreaker for those with high standards, and the only reason we probably won’t be back (this is the only reason I can’t say I LOVE this place, even though I want to). It wasn’t DIRTY, no obvious stains or marks it just didn’t feel entirely clean. The floors weren’t too bad, about what you expect from a hotel but… The sheets and blankets were white and stain free… but there were a lot of…. Black fuzzies. Nothing so disgusting as hair or anything, and personally, I thought it looked like dryer lint, but my wife felt that it was a coating of dust. Perhaps it was because it was a holiday weekend, and they had to use some blankets and sheets that had been in storage for a while. Perhaps it is simply a dirty ventilation system or bad dryers but the black fuzzies really killed the otherwise fantastic vibe. Since I did stay the night, I want to believe it was just dryer lint.

Your mileage may vary, but I hope this helps.

I stayed at 120 for 2 months and although it might be OK for a week or two I would not recommend for long stays.

The place is very clean and spacious for Hong Kong with easy access to Sai Ying Pun station, buses and trams to Central. The staff are friendly and try to be helpful.

The items that impact my score are:
- the lift entering straight into the apartment removed privacy and the staff one day let a delivery person straight into my apartment which wasn’t ideal. Management did apologise and noted it was a new staff member.
- I was apartment 28 and one day without informing me all the rooftop furniture was removed meaning I could not make use of the space and I had booked here for this reason alone
- the kitchen has a large fridge freezer and microwave and only one hob it has no oven and also no counter space. The kitchen could be rearranged to provide guests with more and as such made cooking in very difficult as the counter was the hob of the sink ( no draining board).
- one day the cleaner did not lock the door to the emergency staircase from the kitchen which could have meant someone could have accessed my apartment
- as a result of the lift and emergency doors issues and not having a lock on my bedroom door ( they are sliding doors) I sometimes did not feel that safe on my own
- bedroom lights always flickered and I informed management but it still continued.
- shower. Being European and 5ft 8 the shower head was not tall enough and meant the spray hit my neck
- lack of coat hangers . For those staying a while this should be thought of as I was only provided with 8 hangers
- the lack of towel change isn’t great and there should be an option to change these mid week
- the entrance to 120 was closed due to refurbishment. It meant accessing and exiting the apartment wasn’t ideal and once I was stuck with no way out. Also on an Evening due to the slow closing of the cafe door i often felt very uncomfortable entering the building. On booking and checking in I was not informed of this.
- when my husband and I checked in only one coffee voucher given from cafe which wasn’t a great welcome.

Ideally I should have moved out after the lift access issue and would not stay again.

I would like to share a few words of appreciation to Chi Residence 120 I stayed at on my first solo visit to Hong Kong in May & to the people who run it. The apartment was beautiful, conveniently located very close to the center, perfectly designed with views on both sides, huge windows & a balcony overlooking Victoria Harbour (each balcony has a small green tree for the cozy ambience, a small table & a chair). My utmost sincere thank you goes to the gentleman who received me at the residence upon my checking in & who was so kind as to personally put me into a cab upon my checking out, carrying my heavy luggage in the rain outside until we got a cab. Such a true gentleman!! (it is such a pity & ignorant mishap on my behalf not to ask for his name, but he seems to be always around on the 6th floor at the office). I had wonderful 8 days in Hong Kong & a very comfortable stay at Chi Residence 120!

Stayed here two periods at March and it was very nice experience. Apartment was big, well equipped, nicely decorated and very clean and made it feel like home. Plenty of space for stuff and kitchen with all the needed equipment. Views were nice too and sports park is opposite to building. Location is maybe bit off as there are not too much to see around the building but there's tram just down the corner to go to central or ferry station and taxis are usually easy to get. Service was superior and staff was extremely helpful even finding my lost necklace under the elevator... special thanks to Matthew, Susan and Villas to make our stay so nice! Hope to come back soon.

Stayed here for 2 months before our permanent departure from Hong Kong.

The good:
- Friendly staff & service:
Staffs are helpful and friendly, always smiling, very willing to help.

- WhatsApp service is available so you can contact the staff for assistance.

- Housekeeping
Rubbish is collected daily, house keeping /& towel replacement once a week.

- Location:
Located at the Western part of Hong Kong Island, very close to the business districts. You can simply get what you want around here, all within walking distance or a few stops of tramways.

- The view:
Upper floor apartments are with superb harbour view. Sunlight comes in always, nice environment.

The bad:
- No washing machine provided in your apartment, while the rental rate is expensive. Would have to go to the 5th floor to use shared ones. Only 3 washers and 3 driers available, isn’t enough for residents to use.

- Some residents occupy the dryers for a long time, by setting the drying course for like 3 hours or above, and to keep putting newly washed clothes into the dryer so that they can keep use it for a whole day.

- Pest control isn’t done regularly. Tiny spiders and tiny mites are often seen.

- Kitchen is too small which makes you losing the mood for cooking.

We were lucky to stay here for nearly 5 months. Great location, area not too touristy, has a more local feel. Fantastic view across the harbour. But what made it even better was the staff, very friendly and helpful. A special thank you to Mathew, who always has a smile for you and always willing to help with any issue. Also here’s hoping that Susan gets well soon.

Been a Long term resident of CHI 120 for the past near to 2 years and have loved it there - lovely service and view, accessible location and pet friendly (which is rare in HK). Would love to stay with them again if the need arises. Everything was positive except that it has been 2 weeks per the lease contract and my rental deposit has not been returned as promised in the legal agreement. This does make me hesitant on staying with them again (sadly). Hopefully my deposit refund will not stretch beyond a month.
