The only 2 issues were the weird lighting in the room and the noise from the bar. Would suggest to request for the room not facing the bar. The front desk and the breakfast staffs were really nice. The location was good but might be difficult to see the entrance.

what can i say about this place... Location wise its a few steps to mrt, airport bus A11, North Point Tram station, Ferry to Kowloon from North Point Harbour, virtually you get all form of transportation at your door step, trust me with me and wife plus two under 5 years old it is really a convenient place to be. Surrounding wise, as it is more to a neighbourhood feel, things are very much cheaper from dining to shopping and of course the morning market is just across one street fronting the hotel. I was surprise to be able to buy a few pieces of local buns for just HKD13. (5 pieces) Than there is this wonderful 'tai pai tong' on the 1st floor of the market on the left side of the hotel (take the elevator). It consist of more than 10 proprietors, so go in and walk around and get to the one with plenty of people waiting for their table.

Room wise, just sufficient for two person and as we got two kids with us, its a bit cramp but yet manageable... unlike those hotel in tst or mongkok which is just a bed and a tv. Toilet is well kept and i did my bath on the tub for two nights early winter. Breakfast, wow.... thou we miss the 1st breakfast as we arrive 9.45am which is closing time for breakfast but were very amazed when we went there on the 2nd day. A spread of noodles, baked beans, scramble egg, ham, fat sausages, wide type of breads, instant noodles, two type of juices, coffee and tea and some fruits as well.

Overall, very happy with our stay and the only back side is the huge number of chinese tourist in this hotel but yet again if you know the right time to avoid them...you'll have a great time here.

I asked for a room with a view and I got it (unlike in another HK hotel where it was a crane of the neck and binoculars would have been a big help). I had a good view of the harbour from not 1, but 2 large windows on the 16th floor. As well, the room was comfortable and clean, the staff efficient and friendly, and the hotel was convenient to buses and MTR. There was a small market right outside and various eateries nearby. What's more, I have only good things to say about the breakfasts. The hotel had obviously been stung by previous reviews and had made a big effort to improve, It was a full buffet breakfast, an interesting mix of east and west. It is a budget hotel but I really liked the place and for value in HK I think it would have to be high up on the scale.

This hotel is not a hotel in any sense, looks like a converted tenement building converted into a hotel in a residential district. But prices are steep, more than some decent hotels in the tourist belts. There is no closets as such for your clothes or places to put your bags. Internet in rooms is charged at US$20 a day, breakfast is awful. And the corridors have dehumidifiers, trying to get rid of the mushy smell from leaky wallks. Never stay here!

Dear Manager, Please walk around the hallways to redo renovation. The hotel rooms look old and carpet inside and outside is dirty and the wall beside bed also not clean up. The hotel provide inside hotel amenites except coffee and tea. TV channels need to add up international channel for foreigner if hotel want to rent out to foreigner. If i not understand chinese, i has to watch only japan news channel. Please add more international channels for future guests :) Please change carpet. Please be more clean up room. Breakfast okie.

They cancelled our room accommodation. On the day that we arrived at Hong Kong international airport through E-Mail without any valid reason and that''s their tactic. They charge us of "NO SHOWN-UP" with corresponding amount of 1 NIGHT, ROOM CHARGE. (WE BOOKED FOR 9ROOMS) we roamed around with kids and senior just to look for available hotel accomodation in the area at around 11pm. ITS FREEZING OUTSIDE. WE INFORM THEM ABOUT OUR SITUATION AND STILL THEY CHARGED US! WITHOUT ANY CONSIDERATION. IN THE FIRST PLACE THEY ARE THE ONE WHO CANCELLED OUR HOTEL ACCOMMODATION!!!!!

After travelling around Macau the whole day, my boyfriend and I crawled our way back to Hong Kong at night. The hotel, though located in a somewhat unappealing environment, is impressive and welcoming. They upgraded us to an executive room as soon as we got there. The room was modern, super clean and had functional amenities. The bathroom was modern too, and well equipped with all toiletries one might need. The room looked good and had a great view! It's located right next to North Point MTR and is absolutely perfect for budget travellers.

Great location, very clean and very modern. With free WiFi. It's close to subway station and buses stations. I didn't get the breakfast from the hotel but there are great options nearby. Downsides: close to a street market and at the evening the street smells bad; For some reason the hotel didn't accept my credit card (master or visa international). So I asked for a collect call and they didn't have that option.. So I had to pay a lot to call my bank to figure out what was going on with my card. And surprisingly, everything was OK. Still couldn't use it to pay...

Super disappointed of this hotel!

Was built probably in the late 80's and since, time stood still. Same elevators, same reception, same furniture in the rooms and in the so called 'breakfast dining room' and so on... No internet in the rooms - WiFi or cable.

The room's size is reasonable and this is about the only positive thing I can say about the hotel itself. That, and the near location to North Point's MTR station. However, there is pretty much nothing to do in the hotel's area so you want to use the metro, buses and trams very often (which are conveniently located). But then again, what's the point staying in an expensive hotel room that smells like urine with old facilities, bad breakfast (very Chinese style, not to foreigners' taste), if you are getting away of the area so often...

I am not recommending it at all mainly for the useless service (they knew almost no answer to any question we'd ask), the old facilities, smell of urine (although the room, sheets and towels were clean), view to a construction site and lack of any sort of internet in the room...

The South China Hotel on Java Road, North Point is old. I used to live in this part of Hong Kong many years ago and I often wondered what this drab, dreary hotel was like. Well, now I know. Just after Chinese New Year, I was looking for an inexpensive hotel in Hong Kong. One of the best deals I could find was the South China Hotel, which offered rooms at prices comparable with some shared hostel rooms. I should have known there was a reason for that. Over the years, I have stayed at holes in the wall and 6-star hotels, but the the South China ranks right up there with the worst of them. The room is small, I expected that. The entire hotel reeks of mound and old carpet. The room itself was dank, with poor lighting (two of the lights did not work). There was no heating. In the bathroom there was the remains of a broken glass. Two cups next to a kettle in the room were unwashed and smelled of beer. The twin beds were small and cold and uncomfortable. More than anything, it was just a terribly depressing hotel with a terribly depressing room. The area the hotel the hotel is located in does not help: North Point - once a playground and beach area for the local rich back - has since the 1970s become a horribly, dark and gloomy residential area. Very local, but without color and personality. Drab and crowded. Are there any positives? Yes, the hotel did not ask for a deposit (unlike most hotels in HK). The room has a refrigerator and a TV (but no international channels, just local TV and Chinese). Bathroom towels are plentiful and clean. North Point MTR is close by, trams, buses, taxis are plentiful. 7-11 is just across the road, McDonald's and KFC just around the corner, hundreds of local eateries, even a bar or two further up the road. I need to stay another two weeks in Hong Kong but I have to move out. I booked for 7 nights and have been counting the days. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone, friends or foe. Simply terrible. For the same or a similar price you can stay at the eminently more cheerful IBIS hotel across the road.

It's around 10 minutes' walk from the North Point MTR station. You can also take the Cityflyer bus A11, which stops very near the hotel (each way $40, or get a round trip ticket at the airport for $65).
