This is a very small hotel in terms of its footprint, so although it has over 20 floors, there are only two rooms per floor. This is not unusual in HK, where space is at such a premium. But the hotel is great value for its excellent location, just a 10-minute walk to the heart of HK's Central district, and with subway stations within a 5-minute walk. The rooms were surprisingly not as small as I had expected, and I had a suite with a separate living room. The bathroom is spacious, with a full bathtub and shower area behind glass doors.

The room also had a kitchenette with microwave, mid-sized fridge, kitchen sink, Nespresso machine, tea bags, kettle, plates, etc. The hotel also has a gym, but no restaurant. But dozens of restaurants are on that same block, so it's not an issue.
One caveat: The lobby is reached only by a short flight of stairs, so be ready to carry your luggage up. They have a small hydraulic elevator but that is only for wheelchairs.

Needed a few nights in HK prior to picking up our cruise.
Chose hotel due to location and good reviews.
Not disappointed at all. Easy walk to all the places we wanted to go, and so easy to ferry or MTR.
Very welcoming staff.
Very clean room.
Within 100m you will find a great breakfast place (knead) and many restaurants including 2 in the Michelin guide!
We had a very happy stay.

Brilliant stay at The Mercer. Great room and staff. Great location with lots of cafes and restaurants in the area. The local transport was also plentiful (MTR, buses, trams etc).

The bedroom was spacious and clean, with a lovely bathroom. The whole experience was great and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Had an executive suite, good value for money (great prices in HK at the moment, for obvious reasons).

Large space, apartment style. So had a separate bedroom area and lounge/kitchenette. Work for me, 2x bottle of water per day, Nespresso machine, fridge and microwave.

Breakfast meant to be included, but they no longer do here. That could be annoying for some people.

Location is good for CBD and loads of bars, restaurants etc around here..

Recommend as a tourist hotel as well as its in Central and you get everywhere reasonably quickly from here

I usually stay at the Ovolo 286 Queens Road but for a change decided to try one of the several other 'boutique' hotels in Sheung Wan. Overall it was a good stay. How does it compare with the Ovolo? Some things both hotels do equally well/score equally highly: good location (Mercer is slightly closer to Central but not by much); free minibar; free and good wifi; small (just about OK) gym. The Ovolo gets extra marks for having a free mini launderette (very useful if you are staying more than a few days) and having a nice lounge area behind the (1st floor) reception. The Mercer scores for having much bigger rooms (the rooms at the Ovolo are tiny - no room for a wardrobe for example) which had a coffee maker, sink and microwave; for much better (free in both hotels) breakfast - the one at the Ovolo is acceptable, at the Mercer it is excellent (smoked salmon, good pastries, nice cooked stuff with perfectly done scrambled eggs for example); and the lifts are co-ordinated (in the Ovolo they aren't so everyone just pushes both buttons which slows everything down). Where would I stay next time? I like the Ovolo and it feels like 'home' in HK since I've stayed there many times...both are good choices but I think that I'd probably choose the Mercer: the rooms in the Ovolo really are small and I don't really look forward to the breakfasts.

I had the misfortune of having a flight interruption prevent me from making my scheduled flight to Hong Kong from the states. There was literally no way for me to arrive in Hong Kong on the day of my reservation. I called the hotel to cancel my reservation and to explain the situation in order to receive a refund. I was told that I had to call back in three hours. After calling back, I was told that they would not process a refund and that to discuss further, I would need to speak to a manager. When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told the manager was in a meeting and I would need to call back again later. After calling back a third time, I was told that the manager was unwilling to allow the refund. I asked to speak with them, but was told the manager was in another meeting and could not / would not speak to me. The decision had been made.

I then went on to inform them that between the prior call and this third call, I had been able reroute my trip to include a stay in Hong Kong for a date five nights out from my originally planned arrival date. I asked if, given that they would not allow a cancellation, would they at least move my reservation and apply it to that date. Without hesitation, I was told that the hotel would also be unwilling to accomodate that request. I politely pointed out that the manager had not heard this alternative, but was again shut down and told this was against policy.

Mind you, this is all in spite of the fact that my initial reservation had occured less than 24 hours prior to this. What a golden opportunity to show some flexibility and earn a life long customer (I travel to Hong Kong frequently on business). Instead, I certainly would recommend any major brand over them for just such a reason. If you need any assistance or flexibility - forget it.

I stayed for about a week. The location is perfect with only a two minute walk to des voeux road and a short walk to the Star Ferry, the MTR, Man Ho Temple, the mid-level escalators. The room was wonderful and very clean. The staff was very helpful as well. While there is no lobby to speak of - its really not needed as you just check in at the check in desk on the ground floor and go right to your room. My room was very quiet but that might be because I was on the top floor (which I recommend). The upgrade to the suite is well worth the money. The breakfast buffet was just fine with ample amounts of enough items to satisfy all but the most miserable people on trip advisor. The price was very good and the local area is what Hong Kong is really like with regular people. Good restaurants nearby all over the place. The only downside would be the limited selection on the room service menu, but if you came to Hong Kong to stay in your hotel room - you have other problems. Overall I would highly recommend the Mercer. I will stay again for sure.

This hotel is in a quiet area about a five minute walk from the MTR, however, "quiet" also means that you cannot get a taxi outside the hotel...almost never.
I twice had to walk to the MTR to get a taxi....and was late for business meetings.
The only time a hotel front desk clerk hailed a cab successfully, the cab took me to the Airport Express station instead of the MTR at Hung Hom !
The surrounding area is shabby by HK standards, not 'quaint' or 'old town'..just shabby.

The rooms are great...I asked for a high floor and got it. The use of space in the room is very clever and I concur with other reviews, the split-room works well with a small kitchen and sitting area/hallway before you enter the bedroom and then through to the bathroom. The bedroom can closed off with a sliding door ..this adds to the ambiance.
Everything 'worked' in the room...a not so insignificant feat...lights/tv/music/shower/etc

The breakfast was included...however, the 'spread' was not great and the hot food was cold. This was because the hot food containers (eggs, ham, etc) were not covered and in any case were inadequately heated.
I commented to the wait-staff and the solution was to load my plate, then ask the waitress to 'nuke' it....this worked okay, but it's not ideal.
Also, when the small breakfast room is busy (think half a dozen young kids plus parents)...it's mayhem and very noisy.
Front desk was asked for a recommendation for a China visa location and the recommended location was quite a distance and twice as expensive as something I found online. BTW...go straight to the visa office directly if you have time...it takes 24 hrs and is only $90 as opposed to the $240 charged by most travel offices.
Commissioners Office of China's Foreign Ministry in HK, 7th floor lower block, China Resource Bldg, No 26,Harbour Road, Wanchai Mon-Fri 9-12/2-5. Make sure you have photos, passport copies, green card copies, copies of copies (you get it !)...also, you must have a copy of the the HK entry tab (the little square of paper that is attached to or slipped into your passport. And just so that China can make things more difficult for visitors, you need an invitation letter from a China national or company....tip....keep it simple you're a "visitor", no matter what you're really doing.

By Hong King standards this is an excellent value hotel. Well appointed and reasonably sized rooms and a very comfortably bed. The bathroom in my room was also well appointed, all be it that you need to drop some blinds to ensure privacy between the bedroom and bathroom.

Breakfast was very reasonable and as a complementary option pretty generous. Service was also very friendly throughout the hotel.

A three minute cab ride gets you into the heart of Central and costs $HK 30 (about 2 GBP). A metro station is also 30 secs walk from the hotel. There are bars and a 7/11 convenience store very close to the hotel.

I would throughly recommend this hotel as a cost effective alternative to some of the more major brand hotels on Hong Kong Island.

Answer from Antonio R
Guangzhou, China91 contributions31 helpful votes
Take the Airport Express train from the Airport to the Hong Kong station. Then walk a bit to Central station and take the Island line (blue line) towards Kennedy Town. Get off in Sheung Wan station (just 1 stop), exit A2. You will exit to Wing Lok Street. Walk to the left to the crossroad, then turn left to Hiller Street. Keep going straight to Mercer Street, and you will find the hotel at the end of the street (total walk about 200 metres). Or just take a taxi if you are not on a budget :)
