Having been used to the fantastic Accor standards of Grand Mercures in other cities, this one in Beijing Central was a complete let down for my family. My family travelled with me this time to have a vacation as I get some work done. This hotel in Beijing Central is old and shabby. We reserved for 6 nights. But after a night decided that this is not the place we would like to stay on a family vacation. We changed to Novotel Beijing Peace. It proved to be a great decision. This Grand Mercure Peace could be a decent hotel for business travelers but I would not recommend it for a family stay. It is old and shabby.

The location is good and the smiley lady at check-in was lovely. Rooms are average to good. What let this stay down for me was the concierge. We had arranged a taxi to take us to a particular section of the Great wall , a 2 hour drive each way for a price of 850 yuan. I asked if there were any restrictions on when we had to return within the price and was told that we could return anytime; just to test I said 10pm? He said fine. Subsequently I learned from spending a month in China that taxis in China are costed purely on mileage not time. The concierge suggested that we share a taxi with a Frenchman who had set up his own taxi via this same concierge. We met the man and agreed to share the cost; we cancelled the taxi we had arranged ourselves. The total cost to be shared was 750 Yuan. However, subsequently it transpired that we had only 7 hours (4 hours return travel and 3 hours at the wall) for this and when we stayed at the wall an extra couple of hours the concierge informed us on our return that it would cost an extra 200 Yuan. In Chinese terms that is a massive overcharge. We paid of course but there was no meter in the taxi so I would say that the driver was a mate of the concierge. We told the same Frenchman that he needed to book quickly to see the Forbidden city as the next 2 days were sold out. The concierge told the Frenchman that there would be no problem getting tickets and as a result he delayed booking; then when he came to book it was sold out and he never got to see the Forbidden City. Moral of story- beware the concierge!

A friend and I stayed here for 3 nights while in Beijing in June. The hotel was clean, the rooms were as expected, but in general I'd say this property is "average" with regard to amenities and the food outlets. The restaurant on the 2nd floor was mediocre and we only ate breakfast there each morning because we'd pre-paid for it. The restaurant on the 3rd floor however was very good (local/Cantonese) and I would recommend it. We were supposed to be on a non-smoking floor in a non-smoking room, however the smell of smoke as you stepped off the elevator (10th floor) was overwhelming and while our room was not as bad, the smell from the hallway was still there.

Very nice hotel, close to metro lines. We were grateful to be checked in early, as well as upgraded which was a great start to our stay. The girl at reception was very friendly and helpful, as were all the staff. Be aware that they take quite a large deposit upon check in - this may be a problem for some. Rooms had everything you could need. Beds were super comfortable. Only problem was the cleanliness of the mini bar fridge, which was sticky and had clearly had a spillage in it in the past. Coffees were good in the lounge, didn’t use the other facilities but nice to have them there if we had the time. All in all, great value for money and we had a lovely time.

Normally when I book with Accor on line in New Zealand I get a confirmation email and payment is taken from the credit card. But for some reason when booking here, I received email confirmation but no money was deducted from credit card. When I was checking in the staf kept telling me that I had to pay and wanted confirmation of booking. To complicate it, I had a Google email so I couldn't access my emails. It was such a hassel getting someone else in New Zealand to access my account, send an email to the hotel still to be told that I have to pay. Then I had to get someone else to check my banking in New Zealand only to realise that NO payment had been taken. To top it off, when I then paid I had to pay at the hotel's current rate and not the discount that I would have had when I booked on line. Accor works well in Hong Kong, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand BUT I suggest flagging using the company when booking with this hotel in China. For the record, I have no problem with the hotel service, rooms, food etc, all excellent.
