About

#31 of 1,826 Specialty lodging in Beijing
Sleepy Inn Downtown Lakeside is quietly located along the bank of beautiful Shishahai Lake, the most popular tourist area of downtown Beijing. Shishahai Lake and the surrounding "Hutong" areas still preserve the traditional features of the Beijing old town, with courtyards, flourishing trees, and old hutongs, all bustling with life of real Beijingers.

6 years ago i visited this inn and the atmosphere was wonderfully cosmopolitan and vibrant. Now the staff was not helpful and their knowledge of English was close to zero. They had no idea what was happening in town or where there were nice eateries. I was the only foreigner in the hostel and the reworked bar area was not inviting for socializing. Kitchen was not clean and the breakfast service was so poorly advertized that it was clear they just did not wanted to do the effort... Too bad

Okay this review may be a result of having stayed at Beijing before in a better hotel so I can compare the quality. The staff here are friendly, the room is clean but that is all I can say for it. 1. It is hard to find: from Deshengmen bus station waking towards the lake, you turn right on the small road right before the bridge with the canal on your left side. The hotel is located in between this bridge & the next one up, pay attention to the small signs to your right, if you come to Allied Francais then you've gone too far but the people in there can direct you. 2. I do not find the location central at all apart from the lake being there but this part of the lake is not the 'tourist' part, that is a 10 mins walk east. The hostel is also currently under some internal renovation so it is noisy, smells of paint & dusty. The twin room itself was the deal breaker, they are spacious enough but there is no door separating the toilet & bathroom from the sleeping area, the only dividing barrier is a glass screen with a sheer curtain (could they not at least invest in a proper curtain?). The price is not much cheaper than my previous hotel (around $10 difference) so for the luxury of living in a spacious one story hotel on a site dating back 500 years with proper bathroom, traditional Chinese gardens, ponds, courtyards & great location next to subway, good restaurants, hutongs & the drum/bell towers plus 10 mins walk to the lakes, I headed to the Soluxe Courtyard Hotel & took a one day hit on my pocket, checking in there on the same day. I'm sorry to write this neg review, it may have been a different story if I was travelling solo.

We spent 3 nights here. The reviews are overrated for Sleepy Inn. Good thing is the location - near to the lake & a bus station. However, with poor maintenance the dorm room is dirty with dust. Some of the staffs were good when you ask for direction but if you are unlucky some of them won't border you much.

This hotel was reasonably priced, in a great location, and the staff were friendly and helpful, and spoke English well. There was free wifi, albeit slightly slow on occasion. The room was spacious, and the en-suite facilities were fine, as long as you were happy with a glass wall between the toilet and bedroom. However we had a few issues with it. It was difficult to locate - there was very little signage outside, just a notice on a small blackboard. I walked past it three times and eventually had to ask two locals for directions. If you're coming from Deshengmen Inner Street, shortly after the Jinjiang Inn, you come to a little bridge over a canal (on the right) with a road running down either side of the canal. Take the first road by the canal, so that the canal remains on your left as you head towards the lakes. The Sleepy Inn is on the right just before the corner where the canal meets the lakes. Look for a building with a row of hire bikes in front. Our room was a twin, not a double. But we also found unwelcome evidence of the previous occupants. A used tissue tucked in between the mattress and bed frame, (food) rubbish under the bedside table and crumbs in one of the beds. We weren't even convinced that the sheets had been changed. We stayed 4 nights, and this rubbish / crumbs / tissue were never removed or cleaned up. We were also woken every morning by kids running along our corridor, shouting - we weren't sure if they were other guests or residents, but given the washing on the landing, we thought they probably lived there. On the last night of our stay, we returned shortly after midnight to find that our card key had been disabled, presumably because it was now "the day of our departure". It took quite some time to wake someone up, explain the problem and get back in our room. Had it not been for the serious issue with room cleanliness and being locked out, we'd probably have been happy to return.
