#3 of 12 hotels in Maasai Mara National Reserve
Travelers' Choice
Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.

I genuinely wanted to cry upon leaving this magical oasis - so that should give you an indication of the calibre of experience you will have here. Angama sets itself apart in so many ways - the food, the tents, THAT VIEW - but above all else the service is simply incomparable to anything I have seen, anywhere, in any country. From George the butler to Joseph the manager, to Shannon and her team, to the indomitable and eagle-eyed Titus the guide, everyone here is so affable and so genuinely warm and welcoming that when they say “welcome home”, you will absolutely believe it and feel it. The tailor-made safari experiences mean everything feels totally personalised to you, and the all-inclusive nature of the stay means everything is so easy- rooms are stocked with snacks and even alcohol if you are so obliged - you never have to think about anything. The tents are absolutely phenomenal and I implore you to find a better view anywhere (where you can spot elephants grazing from your deck!). But the real difference here is the heart and passion in the place. There is so much of it oozing from the staff, the food and the service. I guarantee you simply will not find anything like it on the continent. Maybe the world. I’ll stop drooling now, but seriously, stay at Angama. You will be so thankful you did.

Angama Mara exceeded expectations - the views are phenomenal, nothing comes close to watching the migration from your tent. The food is fantastic, the service was brilliant and the guiding was incredible. We were so well looked after by the Angama team whic made for an unforgettable weekend!

Don’t know where to start or how to end this review. Everything, Everyone and The Lodge itself is spectacular. If your considering don’t consider, just book it and you won’t regret it. The views, the rooms, the surrounding, the game drives, the staff, the food was above and beyond amazing. I worked with Tamsin arranging everything before our arrival and she was wonderful to work with. Sophie was our game driver and she was amazing! She knows the Mara like the back of her hand and could tackle some of the rain soaked tracks, where others wouldn’t dare to venture. She is a true professional in the Mara. The rooms are stocked with Gin, Whiskey and wine which is all included. There is a beautiful pool with views. We were there in March so a bit too cool to swim. The restaurant was great! Always has great drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol) and food ready in hand. The rooms had astounding views of the Mara and binoculars are providing for game viewing. We saw the big 5 and so much more on our game drives! I hated leaving Angama. They say Africa is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so glad Angama made it a perfect one. Definitely have a yearning to go back at some point in my life. Thank you angama for everything.

I am so sorry that your beautiful review on TripAdvisor slipped past me and I am only replying now. The world is upside down thanks to the pandemic but that is n o excuse for my lack of manners. From your gorgeous title, to your unrestrained enthusiasm and to the kind words about the team we simply love this review - thank you so much. I see you cracked the girl power team in Tamsin and Sophie and I know they are both tickled pink by your comments. Please don't thank us. It's our great joy to welcome our guests and spoil them rotten and without them we would be nothing. How lucky we are to have such wonderful guests. Warmest thanks Nicky

Our family stayed at Angama in August and haven't stopped talking about it since. From the moment we stepped off the plane, we were greeted so warmly; it's of course a beautiful hotel and setting, but the warm, personal greetings and service made this place truly special. The views were spectacular, the rooms were well-stocked with everything we needed and more, and the food was outstanding with plenty of options. Joseph was such a gracious host and facilitated planning for everything we were hoping to do--from massages to a hot air balloon ride, Joseph made it happen for us! Bonface made dining such a pleasure--he was so kind and accommodating, and would have drinks waiting for us when we got back from a game drive. When I'm having a bad day now, I imagine I'm eating breakfast with the view at Angama Mara. And Robert! Robert was an exceptional safari guide with an extremely sharp eye--we are still wondering how he spotted a lion cub from so far away--and did everything to ensure we saw everything we were hoping to see. I have never in my life cried leaving a hotel until leaving at Angama Mara. We all teared up leaving, got it together to board the plane, and promptly lost it again when we saw Robert still waving to us from the tarmac. Angama Mara is an absolute dream, and a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience (although we hope to make it twice in a lifetime!). Thank you to the incredible team at Angama Mara for a dream trip!

Dear Molly You have no idea what joy your beautiful review has brought to the Angama family during these troublesome days of global lockdown. All we seem to get day in and day out is gloomy and often heartbreaking news. Your review filled our hearts with pride and reminded us that one day soon we will reopen our lodge and welcome back more wonderful guests who are our life blood and reason for being. We miss them all so very much. Even though Robert, Joseph and Bonface are currently all at home safely with their families they have received your beautiful feedback via our company WhatsApp group and I know they are thrilled and join me in sending their grateful thanks. Thank you for coming to stay with us and for making the time to post this review. Please don't stop dreaming of the lovely Mara and we look forward to welcoming you 'home' with our arms open wide. Warmest regards Nicky

We booked Angama Mara for a fairly last minute safari after seeing it come up a few places online. We are SO glad we chose this spot - the location, staff and experience was top notch every step of the way. We flew into the Angama airstrip which is maybe 5 minutes from the lodge. Our guide, Sophie, met us there and brought us to the North Camp for our stay. She was already aware that we were excited to start our game drives and proactively scheduled a time to leave for our afternoon drive with us on our way to the camp. Upon arrival, we were greeted by 4-5 staff members and introduced to them all - Josephat, the manager, Adlight, our butler, Felix and others. Josephat welcomed us in and offered drinks while explaining the property and offerings while our bags were taken to our tent. The common areas are beautiful and the views from this “dining and living room” area are stunning. The check in process was quick, we were taken to our room so we could rest and wash up for lunch and our afternoon game drive. The view from our room was to die for! It’s a beautifully appointed tent (but remember, still a tent!) with floor to ceiling windows, views from the shower and the tub and a veranda the length of the tent for dining, relaxing or massages. The tent has a very nice closet area, a mini bar with waters, sodas, beer and wine and a coffee and tea station. All of the offerings in the tent are complementary and replenished frequently. As we settled in, we were greeted by a group of baboons! They also periodically scampered across the top of the tent. The wildlife is abundant here, and there are no fences, so expect extra visitors. We had Rock Hyraxes join for breakfast, baboons for lunch, we saw hares and dik-diks right by our tent. One of the things mentioned in several of the reviews I read was about the drive down the escarpment. You see game immediately upon leaving the camp, and are in the park within about 10-15 mins and down to the plain within 20-25. I do occasionally get motion sickness, and I only had it one day after not being able to eat a solid breakfast. The ride down is just as bumpy as any other part of a game drive and completely worth it for the views. The open air vehicles do help and the lodge positioning to the reserve is fantastic. The staff and the service is truly wonderful. Josephat and Adlight went above and beyond to make our stay special. We were watching a pride of lions kill a buffalo one day and had not packed a lunch, so they ran a full lunch out to us. The day I had motion sickness, they brought our medicine bag out to us. Adlight switched out the wine in our room and packed us a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc we kept enjoying and brought us hot muffins and coffee at 4:30 AM before our balloon safari. We were supposed to be staying at Angama over my husband’s birthday, but moved the trip up a week due to COVID-19. They still did a special birthday (and anniversary) evening for us when the Masai Warriors came for our sundowner. Our guide, Sophie, was amazing. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the reserve and the animals and shared so much with us. We saw 4/5 of the big 5 within 6 hours of being at Angama! Lions, elephants, water buffalo and a rhino the first afternoon. We saw a pride of lions kill a buffalo, Sophie drove us to the Tanzania boarder and we found a cheetah. The bead shop on property is worth a visit, but it’s definitely worth going to the craft coop in town as well. The culture is beautiful, and the people are open to sharing there traditions and culture. The property at Angama is absolutely beautiful and the views are stunning. But it’s the people at Angama that make it. The warmth of the staff truly made our stay special. I think it speaks highly to the property overall that most of the staff we spoke to had been there since it opened. We will be back!

Dear Jessica and Peter In these dark days of lockdown your beautiful review was like a rainbow over the Mara after a downpour. We are still in the downpour but your kind words lifted our spirits immensely. Thank you both so much. Our very best reviews to receive are those where all the staff concerned are mentioned by name and yours certainly did not disappoint. Sophie, Adlight, Josephat and Felix are currently all at their homes but I have sent them a copy of your feedback and I know for certain that it brightened their day. And for that a very special heartfelt thank you. I was so happy to read how much you enjoyed your stay: the view, the tent, the game drives and best of all the service. There is an oft quoted saying 'I came to Africa for the animals but I will return for the people'. I believe your review captures the spirit of that. I was also most grateful to hear your sensible feedback on the road down to the Reserve. In the early days, before we upgraded the surface on the steepest part, it was somewhat of a bumpy ride but for the past 2 years that has no longer been an issue. And yes, the game viewing is wonderful from the moment you drive out of camp. And after all, the view from the lodge is certainly more than adequate reward for the steep climb down and back up again. We very much look forward to welcoming you both back when all this madness is over. Once again my sincerest thanks Nicky
