Travelers' Choice
Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.

Angama Mara is celebrated for its impeccable service and luxurious amenities, with travelers often noting the staff's exceptional warmth and attentiveness. The hotel's cleanliness receives frequent praise, ensuring guests enjoy spotless environments. Although commanding a premium, the hotel's value has been questioned by some, despite the luxurious experiences it offers. The atmosphere is admired for its spaciousness and beautiful vistas, yet it may not always meet the quietude and opulence expected at its price point. While rooms are spacious and well-appointed, privacy and air conditioning have been cited as areas for improvement.

We stayed for 5 nights at Angama Mara and we were so sad to leave. Apart from the wonderful wildlife including predators , the ambience of the camp was remarkable . Most important the staff here couldn’t have been more attentive . Our butler Caroline was a real sweetheart and couldn’t do enough for us . Our guide Jackson showed great skill in discovering elusive predators . I am writing this sitting on our elevated balcony looking out across the Massai Mara as a sun sets on our final evening in Kenya .

The grounds spectacular, the views marvelous, the animal viewing top notch, the staff friendly as can be, the location good, our safari guide was awesome and caring. The main lodge was very nice. The pool was ok. Now they not so good. The food, while plentiful was not to our liking. The housekeeping was fair. The toilet room had a floor to ceiling window, but I could clearly see the deck next door. So with no window blinds, when the light in the toilet room was on at night, that means the neighbors, when on their deck could clearly see me. Not comforting. How about putting up a window blind or extending the privacy wall? No lounge chairs on the room deck You had uncomfortable metal chairs that would burn you mid day if you sat down. The room was cold at night. This is a bucket list expensive place. How about no kids or a policy of no kids under 18 or 14? We had an obnoxious family next door. The kids were unruly and loud. You could hear them late at night, you could hear the dad yelling at them. You could hear them on the pathway to from the main lodge early and late in the day, and during the afternoon quiet time. Loud games, music, fighting, talking. It really ruined the experience. Their staff and niteguards had to hear them and chose to do nothing. I said something, and nothing changed. Lastly they have these oversize rodents that run on the roof of your tent. All night long. You hear the scurrying and noise. It woke us up, it kept us up. I mentioned it to the staff and they know about it! Well put up some chicken wire to block them I got was these rodents have kind of taken over and live there now. Spoke to other guests who had some problem. Well at $2000+ a nite you all need to fix this. Would not recommend this place nor go back. That said, heard they may be closing in 2024 for 2 months to do some renovations, hopefully they address these concerns.

My wife and I stayed three days for safaris. Wonderful in every wat. The staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly, from the moment we got picked up at the air strip. The food was amazing. The setting was breathtaking. We liked the baboons who visited us during our wonderful breakfasts. Wiki deserves extra thanks for being so special. Our safari guide, Jackson, was so knowledgeable and patient.

Amazing place with the most incredible staff!! We were here on December 23 for three nights. You HAVE to stay here! From the location to the food and the staff and the safari’s it’s a must! Doris and Sadera were great. They were both attentive and patient with our needs. We had a few picky eaters in our group and they made everything seamless. Safari guides Kenneth and Sophie were knowledgeable and helpful. Rooms are hot during this time of year as the sun comes into all the windows and there’s no air conditioning. However there are ceiling fans and some cross breeze. The local school put on a show one evening complete with popcorn and apps.

We finished a 5 night stay at Angama Mara a couple days ago and can’t stop thinking about it. And I don’t think we ever will, either. What a magical place! The game drives, walking safari, hot air balloon ride, sundowners with the Maasai, night BBQ, in-room massage, as well as the garden and ‘Out of Africa’ picnics were all simply incredible experiences. We lucked out and saw the ‘Big 5’ within our first 24 hours — simply amazing. The property is beautiful; upon arrival, looking out at the Mara for the first time, it took our breath away (we maybe even shed a tear or two). The room was beautifully appointed, and I found myself waking up early each morning just to watch the sunset from bed with a freshly brewed cup of coffee made with the in-room French press. But what makes Angama Mara so special is the staff who make you feel like you’re a part of their family. It’s only been a couple days and we miss them so! Hospitality at its finest, no doubt about it — I don’t think we heard a ‘no’ or ‘sorry’ from anyone on staff the entire time. They attend to and accommodate your every need. Special thanks to our butler Farida, guide Robert, and the camp manager Josephat who I can’t speak highly enough about. We might go back just to see them!

Thank you @Alex K for this wonderful review. It sounds like the Mara turned on her best for you with seeing the Big 5 in the first 24 hours - not uncommon, but not slam-dunk either! Thank you for giving us 5 days of your precious time, but more importantly for your very kind words about the Angama team - you are correct that they are what truly makes Angama special. Please come back again soon.

Stayed at Angama Mara for one night and really enjoyed the stay. The view, oh what a view! Equally satisfying on the eyes from the dining area and the tented bedroom. The dining options were delicious, especially the breakfast setup for me. We did hear the tree hyrax or other animals on the rooftop and windows during the night, definitely felt very close! 🤭 Though it felt a little scary especially with the heavy rains, it was a part of the experience. The heated bed was also a nice touch after a long game drive and a DARK / rainy walk back from dinner. We also enjoyed the view from both the pool and gym facility room. I took advantage of the treadmill and thoroughly enjoyed zoning out, while stretching my legs. Additionally, we really enjoyed the map room and gift shop, only wish we had more time here to thoroughly enjoy the amenities. We did the Shamba lunch and that was a really fun experience, touring the garden and then having lunch isolated from the main property, made for a really special touch. The game drive was such an amazing experience with Johnnie, he took us to find elephants, a shy rhino and attempted to find a mama lion & cubs, but they were not active when we went. We got lucky with a double rainbow during our drive, which made the experience so much more magical. Johnnie also made sure that we made it back out the park and up the hill to Angama before the sky opened with heavy rains.

This review is for our guide, Jeremy. We got so lucky to have Jeremy as our guide for our honeymoon - he is personable, professional, patient, polite, and is incredibly good at his job. You can truly feel his love for what he does - that drastically improves the experience in his car. He has a great sense for people and is very relatable and just a great person to spend time with. He has all the facts to recite about the animals, but what is most interesting is his ability to tell compelling stories about the animals and his experiences with them which is very engaging. In addition, he knows the terrain and animals so well that he is able to make strongly educated guesses about what an animal might do given weather, time of day, knowledge about that specific animal, etc. He routinely positioned the car in a way that wasn't right with the others, but where the animal ended up going towards. He is very well connected with the other guides and rangers which helps give him a sense for where to go to look for specifics, even though nothing is guaranteed in nature. Jeremy is also an accomplished photographer, which is even more helpful for those who are looking to get great shots as he understands positioning, light, framing, etc. I would highly highly recommend requesting Jeremy as your guide if you are able to on a visit to Angama. He made our trip truly special. Don't forget to tip him well too!

This place is incredibly special. Our group of 4 ladies visited over the summer and had a wonderful time. The property is exceptional, as are the views. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay, but our favorite part was the people. The staff go above and beyond to make the entire experience extraordinary. We made such special memories and I can't wait to bring my family and kids back for another visit. Thank you, Angama Mara!

Where to begin? My Husband and I found ourselves out of words to describe how amazing our stay at Angama Mara was. It was truly the most amazing trip we have ever been on. Especially thanks to the staff! We just kept saying we couldn’t believe what we were experiencing. We booked a signature stay which included a hot air balloon ride, massages, an Out of Africa lunch & private safari guide and couldn’t have been happier. Our butler was Kimani, he was attentive, fun to be around and incredibly thoughtful. Kimani made our stay so magical, one night, he surprised us with a private traditional Kenyan dinner outside of the Safari camp tents. There was a fire, dessert, and then we were able to experience the safari tents for a night. It felt like a vacation within a vacation. I was convinced that Kimani was trying to plump us up on vacation with all the food he spoiled us with. We opted for a private safari vehicle and Jackson was our safari guide and he was AMAZING. He was so knowledgeable about all the animals in the Mara and shared so much information with us, during our drives. He was patient, and has an eye like a hawk. We were so fortunate to see the big 5 during our trip, some things multiple times. Many people did a drive in the morning for a few hours, came back for lunch and then went out again for a few hours in the evening. We loved our drives with Jackson so much, that we often stayed out the full day 7:30-3:30/4), opting to have a very late lunch. It was so worth it with all that we saw! Nasiti was our Tent Steward and also incredibly attentive to details. Every time we came back to the room, it had been tidied up and the mini bar was restocked. He did our laundry daily, sometimes without even asking. Jospehat was our main host as well, and made it all happen behind the scenes and everything operated so smoothly. I don’t know how he does it! There is also a photo studio on site as well. We decided to rent a camera for the duration of our trip, since we were worried about the weight limit for the plane. It was reasonably priced AND they helped edit some photos for you. And the end of your rental, they provide a flash drive with all the raw images. That was another very unique experience. When it came time to leave, I was truly sad. We had stayed 5 nights and everyone made such an impression on us, it felt like we’d been there for a month (in a good way), but also passed way too quickly. We cant say enough good things about Angama Mara. It was truly a magical place to be. The staff were so so wonderful and of course the resort was gorgeous. If 10 stars was an option, that’s what we’d give it.

Thank you @Sweetcatoline for this wonderful review of what Angama's Signature stay offers our guests - the very best of everything Angama Mara has to offer! We thought long and hard what makes Angama Mara special and then piled it all into a very special offer which keeps our guests busy, but also long enough in the Mare to experience all we have on offer and more! What truly shines out of your review is the team who looked after you... Kimani (who is a firm favourite with all his guests), eagle-eyed Jackson and attentive Nasiti, as well as the ever-busy Josephat - thank you for noticing what truly makes Angama Mara special. The people. We hope to welcome you back one day in the future.
