#2 of 12 hotels in Maasai Mara National Reserve
Travelers' Choice
Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.

Words are not enough to convey my admiration and love for this incredible property and its amazing crew. My spouse and I have visited over 40 Safari camps in our travels throughout Africa and Angama stands, without comparison, as the absolute best. Others have already explained the unreal views, which by themselves justify a trip there, so I will not belabor that point. Here are some examples why to me, this property stands alone in its excellence. #1. OUTSTANDING GUIDE: One of the first things our outstanding guide Wilson asked us was what we were interested in seeing during game drives. It blew me away because this simple question is rarely asked and we actually have a “briefing” we’ve developed to steer guides away from things we have no interest in, such as the tribulations of the Dik-Dik. Wilson has a supernatural ability in spotting animals, and a strong drive to ensure your drives are worthwhile. #2: MAGNIFICENT TEAM: the team is one of the most warm and genuine I’ve ever encountered, which I was not prepared for as I assumed they’d be uptight due to Angama being an upscale lodge. Through their interactions, you can see that they are well taken care of by their leadership, and that they treat each other like family. Why does this matter? People in service industries generally treat customers the same way they are treated behind the scenes, and at Angama I felt incredibly cared for; that doesn’t happen by accident. #3: AGILITY: due to a serious health concern, I must limit my sodium consumption severely or risk becoming gravely ill. At other camps we’ve had to gently remind them of this or I’ve had to clarify expectations as to what I can or can’t eat (sorry, but at this price point I refuse to be served a sad plate of vegetables without any flavor and told to have a nice day). At Angama, chef Evans prepared personalized low-sodium meals for me which allowed me to eat the same thing my spouse was, instead of giving me an unfortunate substitution. I had special requests for almost every meal and every request was handled with the utmost love, care, and compassion. There were never any surprises or disappointments. 4: FIRST-CLASS SERVICE: the service blew me away. One example: our diligent and lovely server Linet anticipated our needs and I never had to ask twice for something. When I mentioned liking orange juice in the mornings to take my medication with, she took note and ensured our room refrigerator was always stocked with fresh juice. I wish I could take a Linet with me back to the US! #5: AWE-INSPIRING BEAUTY: Besides the amazing views outside the facilities, if you like architectural design and design beauty in general, this property will make your heart happy. No expense was spared in making this a captivating lodge, anywhere. I sometimes did not want to go on game drives so I could stay back on the property and admire the beauty. In conclusion...I’m not easily impressed and as a perfectionist who served in the military for 20 years, I’m conditioned to find imperfection and flaws. Angama blew me away so much that we are already plotting a return with friends, whom we want this share this magical place with, before we’ve even left Kenya!

Dear Dio I did have a good chuckle reading the title of your wonderful review. You were both an absolute delight to host and thank you for coming to stay with us and for penning these beautiful words about our team. After all the many safaris you have taken here in Africa yours was the highest praise because you have seen it all and experienced it all. We love what we do and what a joy it is to be welcoming guests back to our corner of Africa at long last. I am so grateful to those guests who have decided to travel halfway across the world, Covid notwithstanding. We know that travel now is not for the fainthearted but it is so wonderful to see how quickly our guests leave all their troubles behind once they have settled in and are captured by the beauty of the African wilderness and the sweetness of the Kenyans. I know Chef Evans, Wilson and Linet will be so proud of your kind words about them and you can rest assured that they will be waiting with arms open wide at the turning circle when you return. Wishing you all the very best and please come back as soon as you can. Warmest regards Nicky

Don’t know where to start or how to end this review. Everything, Everyone and The Lodge itself is spectacular. If your considering don’t consider, just book it and you won’t regret it. The views, the rooms, the surrounding, the game drives, the staff, the food was above and beyond amazing. I worked with Tamsin arranging everything before our arrival and she was wonderful to work with. Sophie was our game driver and she was amazing! She knows the Mara like the back of her hand and could tackle some of the rain soaked tracks, where others wouldn’t dare to venture. She is a true professional in the Mara. The rooms are stocked with Gin, Whiskey and wine which is all included. There is a beautiful pool with views. We were there in March so a bit too cool to swim. The restaurant was great! Always has great drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol) and food ready in hand. The rooms had astounding views of the Mara and binoculars are providing for game viewing. We saw the big 5 and so much more on our game drives! I hated leaving Angama. They say Africa is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so glad Angama made it a perfect one. Definitely have a yearning to go back at some point in my life. Thank you angama for everything.

I am so sorry that your beautiful review on TripAdvisor slipped past me and I am only replying now. The world is upside down thanks to the pandemic but that is n o excuse for my lack of manners. From your gorgeous title, to your unrestrained enthusiasm and to the kind words about the team we simply love this review - thank you so much. I see you cracked the girl power team in Tamsin and Sophie and I know they are both tickled pink by your comments. Please don't thank us. It's our great joy to welcome our guests and spoil them rotten and without them we would be nothing. How lucky we are to have such wonderful guests. Warmest thanks Nicky

The views are breathtaking. The accommodations are extremely comfortable, beautifully designed, and well thought out: including a large shower with views across the Mara - luxurious free standing bathtub, interior seating area with sofa, super comfortable bed, and an enormous private terrace, absolutely all the creature comforts. The animals, of course, are the draw, and we managed to see the big five almost at once (not sure I would have minded if we didn't). But above all, the people are wonderful. Our hosts Shannon and Tyler could not have been more welcoming. James helped us at dinner and for drinks - with his good memory and sense of humor. Violet made sure we had everything we needed in our room. And Lemaalo - Lemaalo was our guide - and what a fine guide he is, too. He had an excellent sense of humor, and was especially patient with the loud and raucous bunch that we were. He was knowledgable, intelligent both with regard to the animals and in his management of situations, and very quick witted and friendly. We toasted and cheered him. A safari is only as good as the guide, and we were never disappointed. The other important thing to note is that their protocol for COVID was strictly enforced. We felt safe. I recommend this lodge - 5 stars.

I was fortunate enough to stay here last year and never thought that coming back my experience would have been bettered - well it was! The location of Angama is breathtaking. Every inch of it has been designed to maximise the amazing view of the Mara triangle and beyond. A view you can never get bored of. The property isn’t a traditional colonial camp and that’s also what’s so refreshing about Angama. It’s beautifully designed, with luxurious tented suites and communal areas that have great atmosphere when you arrive. The wonderful warmth of the staff is another huge beacon of success at Angama. They are so welcoming and warm. As a return visitor you almost feel like you are coming home. They are a great team and so very friendly and efficient. Now to the game we saw! Three very large river crossings, 2 lion kills, so many elephants and a leopard to name but a few!! Epic doesn’t even begin to describe it. Our guide Sophie was exceptional and a huge asset to Angama. Talking to her about her journey from living in a traditional Maasai family to becoming a guide was also fascinating and inspiring. Now to covid. During this hugely problematic and worrying time it’s worth mentioning their protocols for keeping you and their staff safe are exceptional. Temperature checks before entering, sanitising stations, all staff wear masks etc. I felt completely comfortable and any concern I may have had for travelling disappeared in seconds. We stayed here for four nights and I can’t recommend it enough. Our only sadness again was leaving. Team Angama thank you so much again for such a wonderful stay and adventure.

Dear Jonathan Thank you so much for pioneering travel back to Kenya during these crazy times. I am delighted that you found all our Covid protocols to be of the standard you expected and that any anxiety you might have had before your arrival was soon set aside. Guest safety is always our first priority as we operate in a wild and wonderful corner of Kenya and adding Covid safety measures to the long list of others was simply just another set of protocols. And thank you too for returning to the lovely Mara. Did we not tell you that Africa comes with a warning addiction? I know the team was delighted to welcome you back. Sophie asked me to add her thanks for the gracious comments you made about her guiding skills - some guests have called her an animal whisperer. And to have the drama of the Migration - crossings, lion kills, croc attacks - all to yourself must have been an incredible experience. It was Africa's way of thanking you for jumping on a plane and coming to stay with us. Warmest thanks from the Angama family Nicky

I genuinely wanted to cry upon leaving this magical oasis - so that should give you an indication of the calibre of experience you will have here. Angama sets itself apart in so many ways - the food, the tents, THAT VIEW - but above all else the service is simply incomparable to anything I have seen, anywhere, in any country. From George the butler to Joseph the manager, to Shannon and her team, to the indomitable and eagle-eyed Titus the guide, everyone here is so affable and so genuinely warm and welcoming that when they say “welcome home”, you will absolutely believe it and feel it. The tailor-made safari experiences mean everything feels totally personalised to you, and the all-inclusive nature of the stay means everything is so easy- rooms are stocked with snacks and even alcohol if you are so obliged - you never have to think about anything. The tents are absolutely phenomenal and I implore you to find a better view anywhere (where you can spot elephants grazing from your deck!). But the real difference here is the heart and passion in the place. There is so much of it oozing from the staff, the food and the service. I guarantee you simply will not find anything like it on the continent. Maybe the world. I’ll stop drooling now, but seriously, stay at Angama. You will be so thankful you did.
