Travelers' Choice
Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.

So you come here with expectations. A few are met. Most were dashed. The views are stunning. The property is nicely laid out. Rooms are well appointed. The heated beds are a treat at night. The gym and pool have gorgeous views. Their all inclusive arrangement is truly so. Their breakfast was excellent. But then comes all the not so good stuff. The restaurant service was underwhelming if I’m being generous. Inattentive, distracted, callous and forgetful. Thirty mins to get cocktails. No offer to get seconds. Poorly made cocktails. No one checks on the table to see if water is needed etc. One struggles to get the attention of waiters to place orders; I’d often have to walk in to the kitchen to request something. If we request for a 615 am breakfast before an early safari drive, that’s met with a sour face. Our attendant at breakfast was constantly sour faced and spoke with disgruntlement each morning. Dialled the butler and reception from the room phone. Most times no on picked up. Not sure how they’d react in an emergency. The safari guides were unengaging. Had to be pushed to describe the geography, had to be repeatedly requested to stop to spot birds (which they simply didn’t bother spotting and we had spotted), when asked about the birds would give us its name and no more info. They also complained about longs days out in the Mara. After the end of the third day, where we tipped them a months wages, we asked if we could be taken for a short safari ride the next morning before checkout. We were told unenthusiastically that they’d let us know! The bush dinner experience was underwhelming. They hadn’t set enough places for our group. The vegetarian food was pathetic (we had to request for a hot chocolate to fill our stomachs) - this despite knowing that there were half a dozen vegetarians coming to stay at their resort for 3 nights. You return from a 11 hour safari ride and expect a cold towel and a drink? Nope. Sort it yourself. The food they packed for the safari lunch was pretty poor. On day 1 they packed orange juice. Day 2 not so much. We have to ask to get coffee - and that request is met with sullen body language. We asked for a chicken dish and they packed a chicken cut up in three massive pieces, boiled and topped with some chutney. I’ve stayed in safari resorts that charge a fraction of what this place does that takes more care with the safari lunch. You’d think they’d make the occasion special by taking a photo of the group or give you a memento? Nope. On the day of checkout we went for a walk at 7 and returned at 830 am to find our beds ripped out and only a bare mattress. Our bags and clothes were still in the room and we hadn’t checked out. But they’d decided no more lying in bed please. Check out at 10 means get out before 830! I then go for a swim and return to the room at 915 to find them making the bed for the next guests. And they don’t leave the room when I tell them I need to bathe and get ready to leave. I have to ask them to leave me alone! Is this for real? For the amount we paid to stay here, these guys need to desperately change their game. We left feeling that the entire set up was amateurish, thoughtless and callous. Spend your money elsewhere.

It is hard to find words to convey the beauty of Angama Mara. High up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara, the views are just incredible. Add to that the warmth of welcome and care from all of the Angama staff, slick modern dining spaces, beautiful luxury tented rooms, amazing food and all the delights of the Mara on the doorstep, it really is a taste of heaven on earth. The highlights for us were the game drives with Tito, who has an incredible knowledge and passion for the natural world all around. We also enjoyed our walk with Leshan, and saw round the Shamba, a wonderful kitchen garden which forms the basis of chef Evans’ delicious cuisine. We were beautifully looked after by our ‘butler’ Terry all week. All in all, it was just an unforgettable week. We very much hope to return.

Dear Helen, Thank you for staying with us recently, I’m delighted that you managed to experience so much of what Angama has to offer. So often our guests rush in and out on a multi-property itinerary, and miss the chance to really take in all that the Mara has to offer. I have passed on your feedback to Tito, Leshan, Evans & Terry – and they are all pleased as punch. Please come back soon, Best, Steve

Angama literally takes your breath away from the moment you touch down at either Kichwa Tembo or their private airstrip - you are treated to one of the most glorious spectacles of nature, and the wonderfully warm, professional world-class staff. The tented suites are sumptuous. I loved waking each morning to watch the sun rise after making my own cup of Kenyan coffee (the BEST in the world), while sitting in the rocking chair draped in their signature red blankets and feeling the cool air on my face. I saw hyenas, zebras and topi from my tent and had a wonderful view of the kopje (Out of Africa hill). Boni (the head butler) is a consummate professional and did not skip a beat at any meal; George, the manager was incredibly hilarious and friendly; Doris was one of the friendliest and loveliest women I've ever met at the shops and around the property; Our photographer Robert took some wonderful shots that will hang in our home, and our guide Lemaalo is our true "safari whisperer". He found us the famous cheetah brothers, timed our rare sighting of leopard mating perfectly, and took us to the TZ border to observe some incredible male and female lions. He is a real talent and is a dedicated and passionate conservationist who has taught me so much. Can't forget Titus who picked us up initially from the strip and was also incredible! Hands down the most awe inspiring trip and a bucket list destination for sure. They go out of their way to make you happy - a dream come true!

I’d like to segment this review in terms of impact that Angama Mara had upon my wife and I. We expected great views, great food, great accommodations and great service, all of which we got in abundance. But our greatest discovery was how well Angama Mara supports the reality of maintaining a perfect ecosystem within the Triangle. They exert great influence in guaranteeing that a perfect natural balance exists where there is virtually no human influence or interference. Humans are there only as observers and ownership takes leadership in assuring that this happens in a pure and sustainable fashion. Next, the success of any safari experience rests with the quality of your guide. Tito was our guide. Yes, he drove, but he was a botanist, biologist, photographer, tracker, avian expert, host and good friend. Those things coupled with his self confidence, intelligence and charismatic nature would stand him well in any corporate office in Manhattan. It seems that all of their guides were much like Tito. Finally, the accommodations themselves. If you’re reading this you’ve already read many of the reviews posted next to mine. “Over the top” and “top drawer times two” is enough said. Add to that the perfect cocktail, the perfect wine, the perfect meal, all overseen by your butler and backed up by your tent manager, crosses every “t” and dots every “I”. We’ll be back.

Dear Anoul, Thank you for sharing your experience at the lodge here, and allowing us to spoil you so. Tito is the consummate professional, and we are proud to have him on our team - but yes you are right, and we get just as many requests from repeat or referral guests to be guided by Douggy, or Sammy, or Moses, or Fred, or Jackson, or Alice, or Sophie, or Daniel, or Wilson or or or... In fact it's an absolute delight for us when reviews here are littered with names, as the team is unquestionably at the heart of great service, and one's experience as a guest. No doubt Tito will be pleased with your feedback, and I look forward to sharing it with him and the rest of the team. And we look forward to welcoming you back. Best, Steve

Words can't describe this magical place. We stayed five nights in the Family Suite (two connected rooms) with our three sons, ages 7, 11, and 13, and it was the trip of a lifetime. If you ever worry about if your kids are old enough for safari, Angama will put those concerns to bed. From the moment you step off the Safarilink flight to the Mara to the moment you say goodbye to your guide and new friend (we miss you, Ken!), your every need is anticipated and cared for. Some of the highlights of Angama for us: - Daily schedule catered to whatever we wanted to do: wake up early for hot air balloon ride and safari breakfast - sure. Sleep in and breakfast on your private patio followed by a massage - yep. Sunrise to sunset game drive hunting the elusive leopard - they're on it! - Becoming part of the Angama family: from the moment we arrived, we became part of the Angama family. They not only knew our names but drink preferences. On our 2nd night after safari and before dinner we played soccer with some of the locals, staff at Angama, and other guests. Another day we visited a Maasai village and it was a perspective changing experience. Another day they did a walking safari w/ a local Maasai warrior. Amazing! - Helle and the planning services: Helle is with Angama and planned our entire trip. Not just Angama but Nairobi hotel, transportation to and from airport, private tour of Nairobi, beach trip to Alfajiri after safari for some relaxation time (highly recommend Alfajiri!), and all of our flights. This was a new experience for us and we felt completely at ease knowing we were in Helle's care. - The food! Every meal was exceptional. Lots of food was locally sourced at their garden, the Shamba. Each meal had options of African food and more plain things for the kids and they can special order anything you need. The fresh fruits and meats were to die for. Oh the passion fruit juice! - The photo studio!!! Robert is simply amazing (and patient!). We rented a 500mm lens and spent time w/ Robert every day learning techniques and editing photos. He came by after dinner several nights to help us get our picture of the Milky Way. Can't recommend Angama highly enough for a once in a lifetime luxury family adventure.

Angama Mara is a first class, warm, and overall incredible experience of the Masai Mara. As most other reviews indicate - great friendly and warm service, beautiful views, and lots of options of activities when you're resting in between game drives. Our guide/driver was named Jackson, and he really made our experience exceptional... He is a very experienced, keen, knowledgeable guide with a sharp eye that found incredible wildlife sightings and interesting animal behaviors for us. Alot of the guests seemed to have similar experiences with their guides, and it really does make your trip. I highly recommend Angama Mara to make your Masai Mara trip a memorable, first class experience!

We stayed at Angama for 3 nights and I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable experiences ever. From the plane landing on the tiny airstrip, my husband and I were blown away by the views and vast expanse of the valley. The drive to the camp was wonderful as we saw elephant, giraffe, baboon and a variety of gazelle. The staff are truly amazing - special shout out to Moses our fantastic guide- he was so knowledgable, friendly and professional- without him we would never have had the opp to be so close to lions, leopards and rhino- amazing. Also special thanks to Kimani and Doris. The ‘tent’ as it is really the most luxe accom was really special - sweeping views over the valley, fabulous roll top bath to soak in - extremely peaceful. All meals we had were excellent and we loved that most of the veg is sourced from the kitchen garden. Sipping champagne on the out of Africa rock was truly special. Can’t thank the whole team enough for a very special trip. I really hope I can do a return trip sometime soon.

Nowhere more perfect to stay on our first visit back to Africa since the pandemic than amazing Angama. The anticipation of that panorama view from the lodge deck across the beautiful Mara did not disappoint…and the wonderful team made us feel at home within seconds of arriving! Everyone was exceptional was a special mention to Terry who took care of every need and want - even the ones we weren’t aware of! Fred was a great guide and teacher - after numerous safaris I possibly learnt more about the animal behaviour than in any previous trip. The setting, the design, the tents and the team are renowned at Angama but for me the diversity of experiences on top of the game drives is was makes it truly stand out. Particularly enjoyed the Shamba lunch and the Out of Africa picnics. As you always say it’s not goodbye, it’s ‘see you soon’ - already counting the days! Thanks one and all.

Angama is the Swahili word for suspended in mid air, personally I think you are closer to heaven! Waking up in an enormous tent/room beautifully decorated with everything one could possibly need and watching the hot air balloons take off in the Mara, BELOW you is a pretty awesome way to start the day. Besides having to make the most difficult choices of what to eat, as every option is more delicious than the last, and having Terry making sure you are never in need of anything, there are so many delights to do at this lodge that no day needs to be the same, which makes it even more special. We spent a morning beading with the Masai ladies, and then having a picnic lunch with Wilson under a magnificent tree in the Mara before heading out on our game drive. The game viewing and birding were exceptional. The next day followed with a champagne picnic breakfast breakfast after a sunrise start. We also invited the resident photographer Robert, to join us on our game drives. He was so helpful showing us how to use our personal cameras and take great game photos, a massive bonus. The informative walks with Lishaan and Patrick, are not to be missed, it is so interesting to learn about the Masai healing plants. A highlight also has to be a walk through the “Shamba”, their vegetable garden, where they serve you lunch of fresh produce and a delicious glass Chardonnay all the time looking over the Mara…. Lastly we also took timeout in the rimless swimming pool and gym building; this was totally necessary as we had to make space for Chef Moses’s next delicious meal!! The hardest part of our stay was having to leave….

From planning -Tammy at Angama provided honest advice about the every aspect, was always helpful in planning our trip and even brought our safari forward by a day with 48 hours notice. On arrival we were warmly greeted by a wonderful team and jaw dropping views. The camp it itself is the epitome of luxury with every attention to detail, fixtures and fittings and the fact that it has been erected 1000ft above the mara leaves you in awe of accomplishment of the Angama team. The tents are extremely well kitted out, with fans, heated blankets, the free standing bath and stunning views. One word of advice embrace eating fresh, in season farm to table food and letthe chef showcase his best dishes. The chef pulled out all the stops and made a wonderful birthday cake. Being with A fussy Eater, the chef kindly offered of accommodate requests but There were a few issues with the kitchen overpromising and under delivering, of the 7 requests made/offered 4 were not done or poorly executed. This was disappointing as it wasn’t an isolated mistake and not expected at this standard of accommodation, the worst- being served egg in the bush breakfast after telling numerous staff and on the forms that one person was vegetarian (no egg) was not a pleasant experience. HOWEVER Barring these incidents the kitchen/ food was good… Also The mumari ice cream sandwich was simply delicious. The hospitality was brilliant, with the team going out of the way to look after my elderly mother (with limited mobility) and making her birthday special. From a wonderful sunset Boma, to Wilson, our guide setting up a wonderful bush breakfast to Samuel leading us through the Shambha picking out our lunch to Adlight singing a wonderful birthday song to Roy, always showing care. Adlight was able to instantly identify our preferences, likes and dislikes and tailored our food and beverage service to these without us even having to say. Wilson, our guide, was the best - sharing so much knowledge, stories and being simply awesome at spotting the animals from 2 cheetahs to a pride of 13 lionesses. Thank you both and the team at Angama. Thank you Angama Mara for an ‘out of this world’ experience and a lifetime of memories.

Please also accept my apologies for the underdelivery of certain elements on your plates or whilst on a picnic, in spite of our best efforts we know that we are only as good as the last meal we have served, and have taken your feedback onboard in reviewing how we can improve with the special requests.
