Having been brought up in Kenya it was time to introduce our daughter to the Mara. As the only child in the world who thinks that Hippos are the best, Mara Explorer made her bounce with joy. She was able to watch them swim past the tent and climb the opposite bank for their night time grazing. For the rest of us Mara Explorer exceeded expectations. It is a classic safari camp. Excellent personal service with everyone knowing your name and taking an interest in your day. When you visit the main bar / dining area you are treated as individuals not just a room number. Nothing can beat a cold White Cap in front of the fire, listening to the hippos grunting away while your stories of the Cheetah kill or the lion cubs biting their mother ensure that the memories of a cold and wet UK are banished! The food was excellent and we really enjoyed the packed breakfasts in the park. Our guide for the 3 days was John and he ensured we saw some amazing sights that not only excited and thrilled a 7 year old, but also those of us who had been to the Mara before. It isn't easy keeping a child interested on a 5 hour drive when you don't see much until the end, but John kept her entertained. Mara Explorer is more expensive than some larger camps, but it is worth it!

My husband an I arranged this trip to the camp through Aramati Safaris (which I also highly recommend). This was our honeymoon and therefore we had high expectations — and the explorer camp exceeded everyone. The service, attentiveness of the staff and the food were all exceptional. We were assigned a personal driver, Reuben, and ventured out on game drives at least twice a day for three days. Reuben was friendly, and extremely informative. Although we did not see a rhinoceros, we saw every animal — lions, cheetahs, leopards, etc. Reuben went out of his way to make sure we experienced the beauty of the animals on the reserve. At the camp, Maurice and Nelson took excellent care of us. We had a luxury tent that was positioned above several hippos. The tent was comfortable, clean and spacious. Laundry service also was included. The chef, Shadrach, was wonderful. They do have a set menu at the camp and everything we ate, was delicious. They also arranged a night time barbecue on the reserve. I also highly recommend the hot air balloon safari, which you can book through the camp. There weren’t any negatives as far as I’m concerned, but there are adjustments you have to be prepared for. The camp does have good WiFi, but they do shut off the electricity at certain points in the day, and they shut it off entirely at midnight. The same applies for the water, so it’s something you have to be cognizant of when thinking about shower times. At night, you cannot walk the camp alone for safety reasons, because of the animals. We didn’t mind being placed so close to the hippos, but they do make a lot of noise during the day and night. To me, these are very minor concerns and inconveniences. The Explorer Camp is a special place, and a must-stay/visit should you visit Kenya.

We stayed here as a group of 6 and from the moment we came in our minds were blown!! This place is just amazing!! The tents are stunning, and the river right outside, we saw hippos, buffalo, crocodiles right outside! Beautiful shower and the bath outside was something else! Having a bath whilst you could hear hippos right next to you is something we never thought we would get to do! Nelson looked after us at meal times and couldnt be anymore attentive - Maurice and Pauline were lovely too, and the chef!! wow - I am an absolute foodie, and was not expecting my visit to Kenya to contain any food reviews, but Oh my!! This was some of the best food I have ever had! We sat there thinking we were dreaming, couldn't believe where we were and felt utterly priviledged to be experiencing this in the middle of the Maasai Mara! The guards were excellent, every tent had a radio and they would come and get you for dinner, just incase a hippo was blocking the path! In the morning before safari drives, they would come to your tent with a tray of amazing Kenyan coffee and biscuits! And the safari itself.... we had Salis as our driver. He was just fantastic, what a driver!! And he could spot things from miles away! He looked after us so well and was so knowledgeable about each species, felt like Mr Attenborough himself was driving me! And the blankets in the jeep were a lovely touch. The camp also made us a breakfast box for our early morning drives, and we sat on the plains of the Maasai Mara having a picnic! We just feel so lucky to have been, and even luckier to have stayed in this amazing place with wonderful people. Could not recommend anymore, from start to finish everything and everyone was fantastic... there was tears when we left! Thank you to you all! xxx

My husband and I stayed in Tent #9 in early November 2019. We were met by our private guide, Paul, when we landed at the airstrip. This man is extraordinary. He is very knowledgeable about everything that happens in Maasai Mara - every animal, tree, flower and river crossing! He worked tirelessly to ensure that we saw every specie - lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos (can't miss them), buffalo and on and on... You might expect a private guide to work hard, but Paul did so much more... he was constantly maneuvering the jeep, so we had the best photo shots, with the right light and the greatest amount of action. He sincerely cared about our comfort, is an excellent conversationalist and fun to be with. The camp staff are equally focused on their guests! We were greeted by Wycliffe, the manager, who made it his business to anticipate our desires. To illustrate, we had one encounter (outside of the camp) that left us feeling a little uneasy. He took it upon himself to address the situation in a most impressive manner. The chef, Shadrack is simply amazing! He gets 5-stars for quality, ingenuity and presentation. We are certain that he curated our menu based on conversations we had about food experiences – past and present. Just amazing! You’ll never be hungry or disappointed in meals. Noor was our dutiful server throughout out stay, with an easy smile and quiet demeanor. Jonathan, James and so many others took such great care of us. This was an experience that will never be forgotten. Thank you to the entire team at Mara Explorer Camp!

We spent 3 nights at the camp and every aspect was truly amazing. We were picked up from the airstrip by James, who would be driving us for all of our game drives as well. Check-in: The camp (a short 5-minute drive from the Mara Olkiombo airstrip) we were greeted by Wyclef who went over all of the information we needed to know about staying at the camp like amenities, meal times, etc.. He showed us to our tents and made sure everything was up to par. Food: all amazing. Most meals are plated and 4 or more courses. This is not a place to come if you are watching your weight! For all of our meals, Johnathan served us. He knew us by name and would have nice conversations before and after. Having the same person helo us the whole time was awesome and a simple touch I didn't realize I would appreciate. Game Drives: we would do a morning drive from about 6:30am-11am, where we would pack breakfast, and an afternoon drive from 3:30pm-6:30pm. James was with us the whole time and he could not have made the experience better. He was just as interested in the animals as we were which made it seem like he was really searching for good things to see. He was so knowledgable about all of the animals and the park and could answer any question we asked him. Things to bring: This was our first safari and be sure to bring sun-screen, binoculars, layered clothing, playing cards, flashlight, cash (for tips, Massai village, park fees, if you don't have a chance to exchange, USD or euro are fine).
