The setting is magical. So much so that almost a century ago it was reserved, exclusively, for Kenya’s colonial Governors. Governors’ Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, it’s waters teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile, in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Created in 1972, Governors’ Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp. Today it’s still Africa’s best. Governors’ Camp was the first permanent tented camp in the Masai Mara and it occupies the best wildlife viewing location in the National Park. The location of the camp was considered so good that during colonial times it was reserved for the colonial Governors of Kenya, hence the name Governors’ Camp. Today the camp enjoys the same prime location and is perfect for couples, families and friends wanting to experience the best of what a safari in the Masai Mara has to offer. The entire camp is under canvas with all of the comforts of a luxury hotel. Some of the 37 tents line the riverbank, tucked into the forest they enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River, others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. The tents are big, bright and allow in lots of natural light. All tents are classic safari style each with en-suite bathrooms and a private verandah. There is a bar tent with deck overlooking the Mara River and dinning tent with views over the plains. Please also be sure to enquire about our Spa tent which offers a range of treatments including facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. Governors’ Camp has been awarded a Silver Eco Rating from Eco – Tourism Kenya due to our sustainable tourism practices in place in camp.

Unique experience. Luxury tent camp either all needs catered for. Food was top notch and well presented. Staff were always ready to help but yet unobtrusive making you really feel comfortable. The drivers for the game drives were exceptional. Their knowledge and eyesight for spotting animals was way above normal. Only thing which prevents 5 stars is the extremely slow WiFi. Although whole camp is covered, to download your daily photos to the cloud was unattainable. My last day I had to restrict my photos as I was running out of storage.

An amazing trip again.. Well done for getting everything up and running again. Very hygienic and careful. Had an amazing time, our driver was great and we got to see everything, except Leopard and that could change with our last early morning game drive... It truly, as always, has been great.. Luck enough to catch the migration at the river.. Always the best three days spent.. There have been many visits here. Thank you

The most odd thing about this place is that they insist on charging everyone in Dollars and smacks of colonial atmosphere. They don't seem to expect local tourists. Our visit to this so called premium outlet was average. The tents structure is crying for an upgrade and the wood works could do with a little of new paint and varnish. The menu lacks planning, passion and is very basic. The only saving grace is the game and the rooms though the Shower did not have enough water pressure! NO entertainment at all and evenings can be very boring!

Dear kazijuu, We appreciate any and all feedback from our guests, Governors has been a popular destination for both resident and international guests for over 40 years. We are especially grateful at this time to have so many resident guests coming through the camps, many of them repeat. In regards to the currency, what you will find in almost all lodges and camps through Africa is that US Dollars is the standard currency and commonly used by most guests, we gladly accept KES, this is not a problem at all. We find our guests enjoy the peaceful evenings listening to the sounds of the Mara but we do also have activities like sundowners and bush dinners available for guests who would like to do a bit more in the evenings. We are continuously upgrading our facilities and redoing the menu so we hope that you decide to visit us again and see some of the changes. Kind Regards, Trix Hartley

In March this year we took our second vacation at Governors Camp and it was as fabulous as before. We were a little more restricted this time due to unusually heavy rains in February which mean that a lot of the Mara was inaccessible but nevertheless it was still a magical experience helped in no small part by our excellent guide Sopia. Having breakfast on the river bank watching the hippos, following herds of elephants and giraffes, up close to Lions and Hyenas and so much more. Food was excellent and we were well looked after, particularly so one night when we were going to Dinner and an enormous Hippo charged through the camp. An exciting experience but we never felt in any danger. Yes the camp is quite old now but we did note some renovations going on, and this all adds to the charm and authenticity of the place and I wouldnt like to see it changed too much, it is so good as it is. In these difficult times now our thoughts and Best Wishes are for all of the wonderful staff and we will hope to see you for a third visit when things return to normal. Highly recommended and a very special place.

Governors’ Camp Masai Mara is a totally canvas-tented facility, well-appointed and comfortable, and even luxurious. All staff is extremely courteous, pleasant and helpful (as indeed are all Kenyans I interacted with). The food is gourmet standard, created fresh by a team of expert chefs. The accommodation tents are spacious and well-appointed and have everything one can need. En-suite toilets have running hot and cold water, separate tap for drinking water and all quality fittings. The safari jeeps are strong and in good condition, and the driver-cum-guide knows his Mara! Governors’ Camp also operates its own Cessna planes to bring you from Nairobi and back. The only unpleasant experience I had with Governors’ Camp was on return flight to Nairobi on March 01, when the flight scheduled for 10.45 am left at 11.15 am, just because one guest/passenger had reached the airstrip without settling all his accounts, mainly the park fees, and then spent half an hour with park rangers sorting it out at the airstrip, while all other passengers were made to wait in the aircraft. This was frankly ridiculous and he should have been left behind to take a later flight, instead of inconveniencing all other passengers. My own schedule for the rest of the day in Nairobi got messed up because of this.

Dear zalishariff, Many thanks for your kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your time at Governors' Camp. i'm sorry to hear of the delay caused by the other guest. It is not often that these things happen but unfortunately when the issue concerns the park authorities (such as in this case) it is out of our control as we must abide by the park rules at all times. We do hope that you will visit us again. Kind regards, Alisa, Service Manager.
