Mara River Lodge commands one of most spectacular views in the Serengeti - Mara ecosystem; the lodge lies on the Mara River at the edge of Maasai Mara Game Reserve and overlooks deep pools where crocodiles and hippos bask all day. Painted in traditional Maasai red ochre and lit by hundreds of lanterns, the lodge is surrounded by indigenous trees and plants and is an attractive complement to the local environment. Guests can see hippos across the river from their tables as they sit down to enjoy the international cuisine on offer. Families of hippos spend their days basking in the deep pools beyond the bars and restaurant throughout the day. After a hot day's safari Maasai warriors in full regalia greet guests as they return to their 'bush home.'

My partner and I stayed at the Mara River Lodge during our trip to Kenya in February. We struggled to book this lodge, but I had seen this property before and was super determined to be able to stay at this beautiful place. The location is amazing and we loved having such great access to hippos during our entire stay at the lodge. It was everything we hoped. The food was amazing and the portions were enormous. Definitely some of the best food we had over our East Africa trip. The Chef came out to check on us at every meal and was so gracious and friendly. The entire staff team went above and beyond our expectations, were so accommodating and helpful and it was such a great experience. We highly recommend this location to all. It is a must-stay during your time in Kenya

Well maintained property , gentle and helpful staff .Awesome location and we loved the bar overlooking the pool of Hippos . Rooms were too small compared to the other properties Electicity provided from 5:30-7 am and then 6pm-10 pm !! No WIFI anywhere .. so no access to network for entire duration of stay.We couldn't even web check in for our flights . Food quality can be worked upon .. we were served lamb stew for lunch then beef stew at night , black dried up chicken wings for lunch and fried tasteless chicken wings in the same night!!

Just got back home after 6 nights here. We loved it! I love hippos so this was perfect, the lodge was on the river with 200 plus hippos - I was delighted! We were the only guests due to it being rainy season. The staff were lovely and very attentive and couldn't do enough for us. The rooms were small but very clean and the beds were comfy! There was no wifi but this wasn't an issue for us - it was nice to unplug for a week. As we were the only guests, there was no buffet so I cant comment on that food. They cooked meals especially for us - 3 courses for both lunch and dinner! I would have preferred the buffet as I am a simple eater but it was a very kind gesture and certainly value for money food-wise! We went out on safari each morning for 4-5 hours and our guide was brilliant. The only downside (not an issue for us as we were prepared for this) very limited electricity - it was only on between 5 and 7am and 6.30-9.30 pm. Overall it was an amazing week and I would highly recommend the lodge to anyone!

The setting for this hotel with the hippos and the river is very cool. The rooms are small and clean but very comfy. Downsides are there is only 4-5 hours of electric per day and when you are trying to charge 2 x cameras, phones, iPads and watches it’s a nightmare. There is one plug socket per room which makes it doubly hard. Also no WiFi at all and your data will only work in certain areas of hotel. Food was average but the staff were lovely. Also they will offer to do your washing very cheap! Btw it’s not cheap so don’t get sucked in!!!

The lodge looks very beautiful. Nice rooms with view on the Mara river, in which Hippo's can be seen. The service this lodge is providing is very bad. First checking in took ages. I arrived there quite tired, and they just let me stand there, while the person checking me in walked away, and returned, and walked away again, etc. etc. It was a hardship. I arrived cycling, and I was looking forward having a shower. Unfortunately the shower in the room I was given did not work. On my complaint it took quite some time to react. Luckily a man from the restaurant told me the food which is included in the price, was ready, and that I shouldn't wait too long. Getting suspicious I gave the personal the key to my room and told them I was going to eat first. The dinner was a buffet, and the quality was not good at all. For instance: they had spaghetti bolognese, although this food can be frowned upon for a lodge of this standard, it is good food for cycling. I scooped some spaghetti and which I thought was sauce on top of it and returned to my seat. There I discovered the lot was lukewarm which I do not like, and even worse: the "sauce" appeared to be only meatloaf. I returned to the buffet and discovered a bottle of tomato ketchup which was meant to finish the sauce. Since the tomato ketchup was cold the temperature of my food only became worse. The spaghetti itself was every bad:about the lowest quality one can get in a supermarket, the sauce did not stick to the spaghetti at all. The rest of the buffet was not better. Alas I did not get to taste all of the buffet, because it was being taken away while I was eating, and thus I missed out on all the deserts. When I was finished eating I wanted to take a shower in my new room. Then I got my key back, and I had to move all my luggage to the other room, at the other side of the terrain. The shower in the other room did work. Alas only one of the four lights in the room did work. I was told that the lodge would shut down the electricity at 22:00, which I said I thought was ridiculous. When getting things in order for the next day it proved they shut down the electricity at 21:40 already. Hence probably the hurry with clearing the buffet while eating. So while I was staying in a quite expensive lodge, I had the feeling I was camping again using my flashlight. In the morning the breakfast was the same quality of food. They have a number of men wearing chef hats, but they don't have someone that can properly cook food. There were also monkeys walking in and out, robbing food. The personal keeps them at bay by firing with catapults at them. One giant baboon knocked over the juices. That was bad luck for the eating guests, because we didn't get any replacement. At checking out I was surprised by a bill which was way higher than I was told the evening before. I asked for the girl with whom I checked in the evening before. Although the girl was there they did not let her come over to discuss the price. Apart from the higher price, they also demanded a lot of extra money for the conservancy, something they did not mention while I was checking in either. So, although it is a beautiful place, the provided service makes a stay unpleasant.
