So this was my first visit to Mara Serena and my fourth visit to Mara. It is located in the Mara triangle so it takes about 90 minutes to reach from the Sekenani gate. The location is a bit of an issue and makes sense to be there during migration as many wildebeests cross over from Mara river which is located close by. We also saw many lions in that area but for better wildlife greater Mara is a better option.
But this property is the best of the Serena properties I have visited and I have seen almost all of them. I wish we could take it and put in Greater Mara.
The staff and food was amazing. Special mention for Edwin and his colleague (name I forget) who took great care of us during dining. We were in rooms 8,9 and 44 and they were so well located. We did not have to walk too much and the rooms had breathtaking views of the Mara and the pool was a nice touch as well.

Something which I found pleasantly surprising was that at nightfall, there were zero insects on the property, I dont know what they did but that was amazing and I wish other hotels follow this practice.

The food itself was very good and I had one particularly finicky guest with me, but the staff made everything that was asked for. Even for my wife who is allergic to eggs, they made eggless dishes including sweet dishes.

The night safari was also good and we saw bat eared foxes after a long time as well as a spitting cobra baby and the other animals.

Mara itself is great and we saw 14 lions (5 males and 9 females), one leopard and 7 cheetahs including the famous Tano Bora.

One suggestion though that in the times of COVID, they need to step up their checks slightly more. There were occasions, I walked into the property without washing my hands. Also the common areas did have compulsory face mask and gloves which they gave us to be worn near the food, they also need to have a temperature check and sanitization facility before entry and also a kit with sanitizer and face mask can be put in the rooms along with other toiletries.

Hope to visit someday again.

P.S : Thanks Judy from the bookings office who ensured everything went smoothly.

We arrived at Serena Mara on August 5th after a 7 hour drive from Nairobi with 4 kids, 1 being an infant. At the entrance to the lodge it was pleasing to see that they have taken the COVID 19 measures seriously and have provided hand washing facilities plus temperature checks before being allowed to check in.

I must say I was impressed with the discipline that all the Serena staff showed in terms of keeping their masks on whilst on duty and in general good awareness of social distancing whilst serving us.

The lodge has a panoramic view over the Mara river and the Mara triangle with a few wildebeest crossing points right in front of the lodge.

A special mention and thanks to Solomon who is charge of the room allocations, we requested rooms that overlooked the river and as we proceeded to lunch he sorted out the two rooms with super efficiency.

The rooms are pleasantly designed in Masai style and the rooms we got in particular No. 66 & 67 had a beautiful view of the sunrise in the morning.

Since we had an infant with us it was an ideal choice of accommodation over a tented camp because Masai Mara in July and August can get a bit cold in the early morning hours.

At meal times it was a buffet and again it was good to see that only the chefs served the food without guests touching the serving spoons.

All in all it’s a great hotel with a fantastic location (albeit a bit far in) but totally worth it.

Thank you to all the staff and a special mention Edwin at the dining hall & Richard the room steward for a pleasant experience.

This luxury lodge is located in the heart of the Mara triangle. Good access to the Masai Mara. We arrived during the start of the coronavirus pandemic in Kenya. The staff used disinfectants regularly and invited us to do so also. The staff was so helpful, courteous and friendly The gift shop had lovely hand made gifts from local tribal women and very reasonably priced. And the view! I cannot say enough about looking over the Mara from the lodge, every room with a fantastic view!! A must if traveling to Kenya.

My first thought upon arrival and walking through the lobby to the vast patio overlooking the savannah was that this looked like Endor from Star Wars! The views are simply otherworldly! You will quite literally catch your breath. A sunset on the patio or by the pool is an absolute must. You will see many animals and birds on the grounds itself while relaxing!

We were greeted and provided refreshments as we settled in to a quick orientation of the property and check in. Staff here is exceedingly friendly and helpful from the front desk to the dining staff to the gift shop! You will be cared for every step of the way.

While the rooms were a bit smaller then the other Serena properties we stayed previously, they were very comfortable and beautifully appointed. The views from our balconies were unparalleled! We opened our balcony doors to enjoy the view and saw a mother bushbuck with her dawn right below us just feet away. I was also able to spot a lion (and many other animals) on the plain below from the comfort of my own room! One thing to note is that the doors automatically lock when closed... not great if you pop out to see an animal right outside your front door and suddenly hear a click behind you! But the staff was great and immediately sent someone to let us back in!

We had breakfast one day by the hippo pool. The food was great and the views amazing! It rained heavily the night before so the river was roaring. We saw hippos and crocs galore as well as safari ants, mongooses (whom stole food if left unguarded), and the buffalo weaver (one of the Little Five.)

Dining was buffet style and there were always many lovely options. My niece is quite a picky eater and she found several options she loved. My brother-in-law also has Celiac Disease and one of the chefs made it his priority to make sure my BIL had something safe and delicious to eat each meal. We were also on this trip to celebrate my niece’s graduation. The dining staff brought out a gluten-free cake and sang for her! It was a fabulous experience and we were all moved by it. The cake was also amazing! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the cocktail menu... fabulous cocktails. Safari Mojito was my favorite.

We loved every second of our experience here and hope to return.

The rooms are cute and I would guess each has a spectacular view; ours certainly did! We were immersed in the sights and sounds of the Mara. The bed was very comfortable. We slept behind the netting with the fan oscillating above while leaving the balcony doors open! Luckily were not bothered by baboons or mosquitoes. Deep enough in the Mara that finding a variety of creatures was not a problem. The decor of the whole place is unlike anything I've seen: sort of like being inside a large dessert! A singer strummed his guitar each night as we enjoyed drinks and company at the bar. A couple caveats though: the water was non-potable (this we expected) and drinking water was only available for a fee. The food was a bit disappointing. The "fresh vegetable" of one night's dinner was quite obviously frozen spinach and the service was, as another reviewer noted, a bit rushed and choppy at times. We had to revisit the gluten-free concept with every meal though it had been requested in advance with the reservation.

Situated in the heart of the Masai Mara is the The Serena Safari Lodge. An oasis of perfection and calm, it combines amazing Masai style architecture with the unique hospitality that is so distictly a part of the Aga Khan chain of hotels.

The rooms are not very big but well designed. Every room has a unique view with a small balcony. At night one can literally see the wildlife from our windows.

Everything has been thought of- evening games, movies, lectures on Masai culture, live Masai music and dance and an amazing buffet. At a payment visitors can take the hotel Safari jeep and go out morning and evening. If you have your own safari jeep or guide, the hotel will willingly pack you meals to take with you. Service is excellent.

One can also fly into the Serena Lodge which has a small runway close by.

This is our third visit to the Mara Serena over a period of 15 years. The service remains consistently high. The rooms are small and quirky, but have all the amenities you require and are beautifully maintained by the very attentive housekeeping staff. During our two week safari we stayed at two other Serena properties at Sweetwaters and Lake Elementeita which were also superb. The view from the Mara Serena and the location in the Mara triangle is the reason we keep returning to this property instead of going to a tented camp elsewhere. The only reason for my four star review is that the food was not always very hot and since the dining room was enlarged the acoustics of the room made it extremely noisy, even though the hotel was not full. We resolved this problem by eating at the end of the food service. The menus at Serena hotels become a little repetitive if you are spending more than a couple of days at their properties. The only other comment I would make is about the pick up point for game drives. The area becomes very congested and if any clients are late it can cause everyone to be delayed due to the narrow road. It might be better for clients to walk the short distance to the car park.
Special thanks to Bernard in housekeeping and to the hilarious Agnes in the dining room.

We stayed for 3 days. Staff were friendly, welcoming and very helpful. One of our group had a special diet and the kitchen staff were more than happy to ensure that she was catered for. The food is good and the pasta and egg stations deliciously cooked by Joel and his team. There were tea and coffee stations throughout the day with appreciated coffee available early before game drives. Overall though there could have been more variety at the meal times, in 3 days we did have a very similar daily menu. The hotel is very clean and tidy in every area. The rooms are cleaned daily and mosquito nets/repellents put up each night. Beds very comfortable with plenty of available pillows etc. Members of our group very much enjoyed the spa treatments and the pool, although small, was very refreshing and we were able to use sun beds when we wanted to do so.Each room has its own spectacular view. This is a niche view but I wonder whether it’s time to have a note up in rooms reminding guests to be quiet if they return to rooms late at night or are getting up early for hot air balloon flights or game drives. Some guests were a bit noisy but this is not the fault of the hotel. However: Thoroughly happy time spent here - would definitely return one day.

We stayed two nights at Serena Lodge. It has many wonderful amenities and qualities. The location is beyond fabulous. There is wildlife all around (think warthogs keeping the grass trimmed) an stunning views of the surrounding valley. The approach is 60 km of dirt roads unless you plan to fly in a small plane. But getting there is half the fun. Nicely appointed rooms, hot showers with turndown service. Everyone is friendly and helpful. My one complaint is the restaurant. Service is slow and disorganized. Dinner often took at least one and one half hours. They seemed understaffed at times. Dinner isn't served until 7:30 pm, way too late, especially when it takes 90 minutes to complete the service. Some of the dished we're quite tasty, some we're terrible. Lamb chops we're actually mutton, fatty and tough. Breakfast was great. The pool area is very nice, I loved seeing the rock hyrax darting around the grounds

Dear Weffley, We greatly appreciate your comments regarding your recent stay at Mara Serena Safari Lodge. It is always a pleasure to receive both positive and constructive feedback. We are very delighted to hear that you loved our location, view, rooms, swimming pool as well as our friendly and helpful staff. I also would like to thank you for expressing your unpleasant experience at the restaurant. It is only through feedback, that we are able to improve. I certainly empathize regarding the speed of service and quality of some dishes that you have mentioned. We have brought this up to relevant team members. It is certainly not the practice we envision and service standards. We truly apologize that your stay did not meet your expectations. We have also adjusted the official dinner service time from 7.30pm to 7.00 pm based on your recommendation. Once again, thank you for your valued feedback. We hope that you can give us another opportunity to be of better service to you in the future Regards, Simon Muhoro.

Went to this property for 3 nights in Aug 2021 with wife and kid ( 10 yrs old ) .. Superb experience overall .. The view from the resort is breathtaking ! The staff were mostly friendly , smiling and helpful .. The rooms were made very nicely as per the theme of the place you are visiting . Overall amazing experience . Would love to come back

Special Mention : Pamela at the main reception who assisted in giving us a room closer to the dining place .
Felix the restaurant manager was extra helpful to take care of our veg requirement and delighted us with some Indian preparations as well at our request
Christopher at the bar was very friendly
Bernard the helper with luggage and room service
Derrick at the restaurant

Simon , the hotel manager also was really helpful and assisted in making sure our PCR test was done within the timelines

P.S. There was only one thing that bothered us. The Wifi did not work at out room and this was not rectified inspite of repeated request. But considering we were in a place where it would make
Sense to connect with nature instead , this was overlooked by us but should have been taken care of

The weather was great while we were there in mid May. The temps were between 13 and 23 C or 55-75 F. The hotels were definitely not as crowded as our guides said they were in June and July.

Hi - you can enquire about the availability of rooms with wheelchair accessibility. We stayed in adjoining family rooms with a common access door and in our personal experience there wasn't much space to navigate with a wheelchair. Once again, I'd recommend you speak with the staff to find out if they have larger rooms that meet your specific requirements. We were in constant touch with staff over the phone (Mr. Gilbert Langat) and he was more than helpful answering our queries.

Hi! Charges can be checked online on the Serena Mara website. We had booked through a travel agent “Wild Voyager” and they gave us composite charge. I recommend you do the same. There will be a game drive vehicle available to you throughout the day. There are no timings. You may visit the park and feast your eyes on the wealth of wildlife at you will. After sunset park is closed.
