I have been a regular fan and stayed often here. However on our last trip, I was most disappointed. Not only were all the good staff gone, leaving young, keen but inexperienced staff to try to manage things, but the place itself needed a lot of TLC. I appreciate Lamu has been on a downturn for some time, however to... More

Dear Sunderam, we read your comments and feel they are somewhat exaggerated. For example, the prawns you personally bought from an outsider fisherman. Your request was for us to pack them for you: we cannot be held accountable for anything that does not come directly from our kitchen. We have informed the fisherman of his mistake and we no longer... More

Fatuma's Tower is a hidden gem in Shela Village full of history, culture, artwork, and antiques. The grounds are beautiful, built around a stunning tree. Food is amazing, plunge pool is great. Rooms have lots of local character. The staff is incredibly helpful. Massage available onsite. This was the first place I stayed in Shela and I've sent many people... More

This is the most peaceful, cozy, relaxing, and beautiful guest house I've ever seen. My wife and I went here to celebrate our 30th birthdays. I had booked the trip as a surprise for my wife, and from my first email Gillies the owner was incredibly accommodating and helpful. Once we arrived, the same went for all of the small... More

On a recent trip around Kenya, staying at Fatuma's Tower was definitely one of the highlights. Set in a quiet corner of the beautiful Shela village on Lamu island, Fatuma's Tower is an idyllic Swahili retreat. For those seeking inner peace, a place to practise and develop their yoga skills or just something different, Fatuma's Tower is just perfect. Gilles... More

We are in the middle of a one-week holiday on the island of Lamu, site of the oldest city in Kenya. The two towns on the island – Lamu Town and Shela, the location of Fatuma’s Tower, are medieval Arabian, consisting of tiny twisting alleys. Transportation is by foot or donkey. The entire archipelago is Swahili – mixing Arabian, Kenyan,... More

Fatuma's Tower is simply a wonderful place to stay in Shela on the island of Lamu. It is situated in the village, set back from the seafront, which is only a short walk. Fatuma's Tower as it says on the website is about "peace, space and tranquility". It is all that with delicious breakfast with fresh juices and fruits and... More

This was our third visit to Fatuma's Tower and we will definitely be back again! We stayed in the Acacia Suite this time and it is our favourite room so far, especially with the terrace and hammock bed. We spent 6 nights, relaxing, eating the amazing meals of fresh seafood prepared by Fatuma's own cook and spending time on the... More

I stayed at Fatuma's Tower 3 or 4 times in 2013/14 and absolutely loved it. When you step into the shady garden, with the sound of the water in the plunge pool, you relax immediately. The buildings retain their original charm, with traditional Lamu-style furniture, while also being clean, fresh and welcoming. The white sheets are good quality and there... More

Fatuma's is more beautiful and spacious than any of the photos I have seen. The house staff are very attentive, and adapted when I let them know that being treated as a colonial queen is not really my style. I chose Fatuma's to do yoga, but actually did yoga classes twice a day 5 minutes walk away in Banana House... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Carefully restored and modified in 1998 the historic Tower has five double bedrooms and a large yoga hall. Included behind the same compound wall is the Sand Castle with it's ground floor family apartment of three double rooms. In the surrounding gardens, the Garden Cottage has two double rooms both with bathrooms. The ten double rooms are all furnished with local antiques and fabrics in a simple yet elegant style to recreate the atmosphere of a fine Swahili house. No two rooms are the same and the cool, airy spaces retain an informal feel while several shaded balconies provide comfortable areas for avoiding too much sun and generally enjoying the peace and fresh air. The peaceful gardens have been recently " enlivened" by the refreshing sound of a fountain splashing over coral rocks into a small plunge pool. All rooms have solar powered hot water, fans and mosquito nets. ... more   less
