#5 of 39 B&Bs / Inns in Lamu Island
Carefully restored and modified in 1998 the historic Tower has five double bedrooms and a large yoga hall. Included behind the same compound wall is the Sand Castle with it's ground floor family apartment of three double rooms. In the surrounding gardens, the Garden Cottage has two double rooms both with bathrooms. The ten double rooms are all furnished with local antiques and fabrics in a simple yet elegant style to recreate the atmosphere of a fine Swahili house. No two rooms are the same and the cool, airy spaces retain an informal feel while several shaded balconies provide comfortable areas for avoiding too much sun and generally enjoying the peace and fresh air. The peaceful gardens have been recently " enlivened" by the refreshing sound of a fountain splashing over coral rocks into a small plunge pool. All rooms have solar powered hot water, fans and mosquito nets.

I stayed at Fatuma's Tower over Christmas with a friend and it was an amazing experience. This was my second Christmas at Fatuma's Tower. The staff are kind and will fulfill your every wish. They went out of their way to get us avocados for breakfast although it wasn't the season. They book boats and restaurants, get you whatever food you would like to eat and organize to wash and press your laundry for a couple of dollars. The house, garden and courtyard are just beautiful. They did a fantastic job preserving the historic character of the building and I love all the details: the library, private balconies, etc. There is also a yoga room and a massage room. I wasn't so fond of the dinner there this time. There might be nicer and also icheaper places to eat. I feel like last year was better somehow. Overall, I love the place. I hope to come back again.

Beautiful accommodations in a beautiful part of the world. The room itself was spotlessly clean; cleaned each morning whilst we enjoyed a beautiful fresh breakfast in the garden. This was the best breakfast in Kenya with fresh fruits, juice and real ground coffee and pancakes. the pressure in the shower was also fantastic. we choose to eat dinner here one night and it was the best meal we had on Lamu. the staff were wonderful and attentive to all our needs. big shout out to Albert who took care of all our needs. I hope to be back sometime.

Do not stay here. Housekeeping standards are appalling and not to standard of even the most basic places in Africa - having travelled the continent for the last 40 years I have seen quite a view places across the spectrum. no hot water, mosquito nets broken and torn in multiple places, stains on mattresses and pillows, dirty sheets, no change of water glasses or water on a daily basis, filthy cushion covers on all furnishings and worse still, if you pull back the sheets on the bed the mattresses are stained with blood, urine, saliva and god knows what else. Went to bed and woke up covered in mosquito bites, cockroaches scuttling across the floor during the night while all the doors are shut ... I mean need I go on! This place should not be allowed to stay in business. I am utterly disgusted.

Response from Gillies T, Owner at Fatuma's Tower
Responded Nov 8, 2019
Dear K N, We are very sorry to learn that your stay with us was not the best one. Please understand that the morning you checked in another couple had checked just out the same very morning. I believe that the housekeeper, in a rush did not make a good job of cleaning the rooms. We have already taken the necessary steps: disciplining the staff who obviously was sleeping on the job, ordered new mosquito nets and added new bed linen. On top of that we have vacuumed the area around the cottage against any mosquitoes and other insects. We are doing our best to improve and hopefully the next time you visit you will see these changes for yourself. I would therefore beg you to please remove this review. And as compensation we would like to offer a 3 day complimentary stay for you or any of your friends who would like to visit in the near future. Best wishes, Gillies

Our stay at Fatumas Tower was excellent. The staff was very courteous. Also the rooms are very charming and clean. We also had a balcony at our room to relax. Breakfast in the outdoor area was great..
