About

Carefully restored and modified in 1998 the historic Tower has five double bedrooms and a large yoga hall. Included behind the same compound wall is the Sand Castle with it's ground floor family apartment of three double rooms. In the surrounding gardens, the Garden Cottage has two double rooms both with bathrooms. The ten double rooms are all furnished with local antiques and fabrics in a simple yet elegant style to recreate the atmosphere of a fine Swahili house. No two rooms are the same and the cool, airy spaces retain an informal feel while several shaded balconies provide comfortable areas for avoiding too much sun and generally enjoying the peace and fresh air. The peaceful gardens have been recently " enlivened" by the refreshing sound of a fountain splashing over coral rocks into a small plunge pool. All rooms have solar powered hot water, fans and mosquito nets.

Do not stay here. Housekeeping standards are appalling and not to standard of even the most basic places in Africa - having travelled the continent for the last 40 years I have seen quite a view places across the spectrum. no hot water, mosquito nets broken and torn in multiple places, stains on mattresses and pillows, dirty sheets, no change of water glasses or water on a daily basis, filthy cushion covers on all furnishings and worse still, if you pull back the sheets on the bed the mattresses are stained with blood, urine, saliva and god knows what else. Went to bed and woke up covered in mosquito bites, cockroaches scuttling across the floor during the night while all the doors are shut ... I mean need I go on! This place should not be allowed to stay in business. I am utterly disgusted.

Dear K N, We are very sorry to learn that your stay with us was not the best one. Please understand that the morning you checked in another couple had checked just out the same very morning. I believe that the housekeeper, in a rush did not make a good job of cleaning the rooms. We have already taken the necessary steps: disciplining the staff who obviously was sleeping on the job, ordered new mosquito nets and added new bed linen. On top of that we have vacuumed the area around the cottage against any mosquitoes and other insects. We are doing our best to improve and hopefully the next time you visit you will see these changes for yourself. I would therefore beg you to please remove this review. And as compensation we would like to offer a 3 day complimentary stay for you or any of your friends who would like to visit in the near future. Best wishes, Gillies

Our stay at Fatumas Tower was excellent. The staff was very courteous. Also the rooms are very charming and clean. We also had a balcony at our room to relax. Breakfast in the outdoor area was great..

Once you arrive to Fatuma’s tower in Shela, Lamu Island, you will never want to leave. Every single detail in the room and the common spaces is carefully selected with impeccable taste. In our room we had a balcony with a day bed for lounging where we spent a lot of time as it was so comfortable and perfect. We really enjoyed being welcomed by the owner of Fatuma’s Tower which gave even more of a personal touch to our stay. The breakfast, which we enjoyed in the garden, was delicious with juice and fresh fruits from their own garden, local coffee and eggs prepared as you wish. There is even a little splash pool perfect for a dip when you return from the gorgeous beach in Shela.

What a special place! Can't believe we didn't find this earlier having been coming to Lamu for many years now. Very special rustic vibe. Loved the outdoor seating areas. Perfect for a bit of R&R and introspection. Bit worn around the edges here and there but that partly adds to the charm. Service was great and the free boat transfers were highly appreciate. We'll certainly be back very soon! Our new go to place in Shela for sure!

Horrible place I went with my wife and was our honeymoon but from our first night we new this was going to be a loong stay. Our room was dusty and the ceiling was crawling with termites who would chomp at the wood leaving our bed constantly dirty. Our first night at the hotel we were asked what we wanted to eat as it was all fresh. Everything we asked for wasn't on the menu lol. They said they had fresh calamari which would be ready in 20 mins but we got it 2 hours later. And it was frozen and black (not the colour calamari is supposed to be) The ac wouldn't work in our room and we were told it would be fixed the next day which was another lie. Took a total of 4 days to sort. And the shower had cold water for the WHOLE trip and we were told that's due to the stormy weather. Another lie as other hotels had hot water. We finally met the owner of the hotel 'gilly' who interacted for all of 5 mins with us before going to his home. Whereas with other guests he would take them on a tour of the grounds. We were offered a free meal for all our troubles and you guessed it. Everything that we asked for wasn't available even though we were guaranteed it. They only gave us a portion of prawns to share. We stayed waaaay too long there. The room was never cleaned only a slight dusting and sheets only changed twice during our stay. We sent out clothes for laundry and each time they came back, the clothes were discolored and starchy and often we would need to chase up for laundry which hasn't come back. I wouldn't go back there I hope the owner never treats guests like that ever again and that his workers. The only thing I would say was remotely bearable about this place was Alfred who went out of his way to try and make the best out of a horrible situation.

Hi ZeeshanH90, We tried our best to rectify the situation and even gave you a free dinner in compensation. Kindly let us know what we can do to make you consider removing this review. Always our intention is to provide the best service to our clients, there was a problem with the air conditioning etc but we took care of it. And we will handle the matter of delays in service with the Kitchenn department. We really sincerely hope you can review your review. Thank you very much.
