My first time experience of Hanok stay, satisfied with their service and breakfast prepared. You will got a chance to try the Hanbok without charges during your stay there. The Korean traditional food will be served for the breakfast and all guest are welcomed to have the breakfast together. Shared bathroom is clean. The only comment is our double room... More

The staffs Jiwon and Minyoo (not sure if spelled right) were very hospitable and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. The location is very accessible to a lot of places like Insadong and Myeongdong. It's within the hanok village as well. We had a lovely welcome breakfast ~ the pumpkin pancakes are our favourite. Afterwards we had a hanbok... More

My recent trip to Seoul had 2 highlights. The first was a tour to the infamous DMZ and the second was the warm welcome at the Maru Guesthouse. We booked the family room, which was divided into a well climatised sleeping area, a common room and a really nice bathroom. The hanok itself was the actual family home of the... More

It was an amazing experience staying in this hanok. Mama Maru welcomed us like part of the family though she only speaks very little English she tried her best to communicate with us. Her food was authentic and delicious. I loved the pancakes every morning. Initially, we thought we will have problems sleeping, but we slept comfortably with the mattress.... More

My wife and I took a mini bus from the subway station. It's a short ride, but it's quite an experience. I was surprised the bus made it up there! The place is right at the top of the hill, so you get a view of the city. The owner's daughter explained to us a bit about the place and... More

I usually stay in hotels when traveling but this cute place was quite an unforgettable experience. The Guesthouse is very cozy. Staying at Bukchonmaru is a really awesome Korean cultural experience. The staff especially made us feel welcome and part of their family. Wonderful!

I went into the stay knowing what to expect of the room, shared bathroom, and facilities, and was thankful that my expectations were met and exceeded. Not until I was there and seeing for myself what a hanok was like, did I truly know where I would be staying. I did not know how I would feel with the futon... More

Having been to Seoul numerous times, this was my first time with my Korean mother. We were on a three week trip to four countries and I wanted to experience a guesthouse on this trip prior to staying in a so-called "regular" hotel. Our family room was spacious and comfortable. The floor had a mat and plenty of pillows and... More

One of the first impressions we had of the guesthouse was the efficiency in which the owner, Si-Young replied to our queries. He sent detailed instructions on directions to the guesthouse, what to expect, and ways to contact him. All this assured we were to be well taken care of. And it did not disappoint. Buckhonmaru Hanok Guesthouse is nestled... More

Staying in Samcheongdong / Bukchon

Neighborhood Profile
Samcheongdong / Bukchon
This historic neighborhood was traditionally home to Seoul’s middle and upper-classes. Now it’s most famed for its clusters of beautiful, traditional Korean homes (called hanok), many of which are found in Bukchon. Many of these homes have now been converted into restaurants, cafes, shops, and even guesthouses, and their unique architecture offers a look at Korea’s traditional beauty. Samcheongdong’s main and side streets attract locals and tourists alike for their quaint and charming scenery, while the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) serves as the residence for South Korea’s president. Art fans will love exploring the many independent and private art galleries in the area.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Bukchon Maru Hanok Guesthouse is located in the heart of the Bukchon Hanok residential area in Seoul. Bukchon (meaning North Village in Korean) has the highest concentration of Hanoks, the traditional tiled-roof Korean buildings. We are a family run guest house, having owned this property for over 30 years. Due to its proximity to the local palaces, Bukchon has been home to high government officials and prestigious families of the late Chosen Dynasty, who needed to commute to the local palaces often. The name "Bukchon" was synonymous with status and class in the era no more than 100 years ago. Along with the tumultuous modern Korean history, the quiet neighborhood of Bukchon also underwent significant changes. Modern buildings began to appear, and with the elimination of traditional class system, more and more people swarmed in to the village. ... more   less
