This review is based on my personal experiences of the Tropicana, and subsequent investigation of reviews and internet reports. Positives - If you would like the travel experience of your life for long-term memories and a great comparison for the future upon which to rate all other holidays, the Tropicana is definitely for you. Despite being overworked, under-appreciated by the management, underpaid, and unable to effect any change, the Tropicana non-management staff are very nice Vanuatan locals who deserve respect. Negatives - Everything other than non-management staff. Without exaggeration, this place and the two other establishments owned by the same people, need to be sanctioned by the Vanuatan authorities, tourist boards internationally, and have all referrals ceased by travel brokers and organizations such as AirBnB who support the theft orchestrated by the owners and management against tourists and seemingly the staff. Some specifics: - The Tropicana manager was violently aggressive, sarcastic, threatening, demeaning, and totally out of his depth as a manager. The observations come from a guest, me, who has received awards for customer service in his own non-tourism professional business over a decade, and has also worked in the tourism industry as a host. - The Tropicana is out of town and isolated, run down, and badly managed. Unprofessional and unacceptable hosts and management. - The owners of this and two other Port Vila businesses, upon review of their history obtained from various sources on the internet including reviews of their properties (other than the reviews suspiciously positive occurring after the numerous negative reviews), appear to be very sketchy characters willing to intimidate guests and tell untruths to companies such as AirBnB to escape the refund process. - The accommodation is well below the advertised description to the point of being an outright lie. For instance, the rooms are a mosquito trap, dangerous in a country with mosquito-borne disease. The bathroom plumbing in our room was substandard. The airconditioning could not be adjusted for temperature and needed to be switched off at the ceiling level switch as the remote did not function. The manager's wife confirmed that the kayaks were not serviceable only after we reported the holes in them and other features such as them being dirty, no paddles, etc. The river between the two lagoons is tidal and carries water from upstream where sewage is not adequate, as well as from Port Vila Harbour where there are signs stating the area is off limits to diving, snorkeling, and swimming due to pollution from sewage. The room fridge freezer did not function and spoiled our food. The owner quoted and charged inflated prices for a pickup from the airport. - We stayed a single night of a 7-night booking in March, and the owners have refused to refund our money. AirBnB also backs the lies from the owners and now in July AirBnB has refused a refund against its own refund policy, requiring further actions by us to obtain a solution to this problem. Many hours have been wasted despite detailed written communication. - One of the owner's, without identifying themselves to us as an owner despite our request, tried to interrogate us, eventually writing to us with the true position as an owner, denying our complaints based on the manager's say so. The owner had previously volunteered that his manager was a long time friend, hence we suspect collusion, self-protection, and monetary gain are the basis for denial of a refund for the six nights we did not stay out of our seven-day booking. We should also receive compensation for all the unnecessary hoops we have been forced to jump through to access our refund. - Barking dogs across the water from the Tropicana keep guests awake all night. The management freely admits the dogs are a problem but fail to mention this in advertising. Lies by exclusion. The manager stated that all resorts will be the same regarding dog noise - which is a deliberate lie, as we moved to another establishment at our expense, without any dog noise. - We paid a higher price at the Tropicana for less (other than extremely high stress, poor facilities, and aggressive management), than it cost us for a very pleasant and cheaper stay at the Moorings in Port Vila itself. Hints and advice : Do not stay at the Tropicana. : Do not book this place through AirBnB or any other agency as doing so will compound your loss. : Read all the reviews about the Tropicana and note the discrepancies between the truthful negative reviews and fallacious positive reviews. Note that one of the owners is self-described as a writer, and has a history with the Vanuatuan courts according to newspaper articles published online. Goodluck

This place is a little away from the town but there is 2 supermarkets just down the road within walking distance. It is also easy to just flag down a bus from the main road to go to town or anywhere else. Everyone here is very friendly. Serah at the reception made us feel very welcome and was always happy to help with any questions we had. We stayed here for a week. We had the 2 bedroom apartment. It was clean and tidy. The rooms were cleaned everyday with new towels put in which we appreciated very much. Our apartment was just metres away from the water which we just loved. The only issue we had with the apartment was it had a bit of damp smell in the kitchen area. It wasn't too bad and we spent most of the days out so we didn't make a big deal about it. We assume it must be from the timber flooring closer to the bathroom area. Couldn't smell it anywhere else unless you were in the kitchen area, The restaurant served good food. Be patient as service can be a bit slow when there's a few other people. We didn't mind as we were on holiday and appreciated the food being cooked to order. Adele who worked at the restaurant was lovely. She was always smiling and happy to serve us. We even got a complimentary bowl of chips a couple of times because we had been waiting for quite sometime and she must have noticed our kids were getting tired and hungry. Try the kickass curry which we loved. However, it didn't kick our asses...hhaha...We love our curry spicy so the 2nd time we ordered we asked for more chilli to be added into it. I was much better then. The pool is small but the place isn't that busy and hardly anyone in the pool so it didn't matter. The surrounding areas around the resort is clean and tidy. Wifi was not very good in the apartment. Only in certain places. It was much better outside on the porch The estuary is lovely. Water is clean and clear. We were told we could swim in it, but we didn't. The only reason we didn't was because there were so many star fish and other sea creatures in there we were afraid we might step on them and hurt them. Our kids loved picking up the star fish and sea cucumbers. We went out kayaking in the estuary which was really nice and relaxing as the water is very calm. Before we arrived, I read quite a few reviews about the kayaks having holes in them. We found all the kayaks to be ok. The one we used did have some holes in it, but I think that's how its meant to be. If the kayaks didn't have those holes the kayak would sit too low in the water hence making it unstable and would topple over. Well, we kayaked quite a long way out and made it back without it sinking or filling up with water. The only noise was the dogs in the village on the other side of the estuary. The dogs barked quite a bit even in the night, but that's not the fault of the resort and nothing they can do about it. Before we left we got a little gift bag and a little note to say thank you for our stay there and signed by everyone who worked there. We thought that was very nice of them to do that. If we ever came back to Vanuatu, we woudnt hesistate to stay here again. We have even recommended this place to some friends who are planning on visiting in the future.

We stayed a week and though the staff were very helpful and very friendly, there was a need to improve the organisation. The kayaks leaked and the dining room floor needed to be swept every day. Our TV did not work for our last two nights and the shower needed somewhere for the soap, apart from the floor. On the other hand, the chef provided excellent main courses and the view over the lagoon was a delight. The bed was comfortable and the grounds colourful and tidy.

Wonderful friendly staff that made us feel so welcome and couldn't do enough for us. Anything we asked for they made it happen, it was a nice small hotel that really felt very personal and we were pleased we chose it for location and tranquility. While quite rustic in the location away from big resorts, it was really delightful to have experienced this lovely welcoming hotel. It was my husbands birthday while there and they went out of their way to make a fuss and do something special for us. I highly recommend. There were a couple of small things we needed rectifying however they addressed everthing for us - no complaints at all and would go back there. The restaurant was fantastic great food and really nice service to have them available at any time. It was a very nice personal service that we loved.
