I stayed here for a week (on business) but it was a good base, the room was large although I would have preferred to be upstairs because then I wouldn't have heard people walking above me. Wifi is excellent in and out of your room. This is a quaint little lodge with only a few guests at a time directly behind the Palace (I mean it is literally across the street) and in easy walking distance to the esplanade and markets or if you don't want to walk a taxi is only 2-4 dollars depending on how far you go into town. I suggest walking in and getting a taxi back if you buy a lot. A set breakfast is included: cereal, fruit tea/coffee, toast and they make pretty good scrambled eggs. I never got to eat here because I was functions during the day and night but they catered for that function and the food they put on was amazing. If the food in the restaurant is as good you're on a winner. I had a TV but never used it so can't comment on reception/quality. The A/C works well although you may not need it if you stay during May-August (winter). At night you know you are safe in your room as they shut the and lock the gates after dark and have a security guard on watch all night... but don't worry if you stay out late they let you in :) The staff are very friendly and super helpful, the manager saw me walking one day and pulled over to give me a lift. I only gave the place an average rating because I want other guests not to come here expecting a topend lodge, for the price you pay this place is pretty good. Honestly it is a bit well used and could do with some newer furniture/beds/furnishings, while not new you always get clean fresh sheets and towels. The pressure in the showers is good but it is a circus act to get the temperature right before the hot runs out. It was either skin blistering to cold, I usually opted for a cold shower and used the hot water for shaving. It is the tropics after all and who needs a hot shower, even "cold water" is around 20C. Which reminds me, Tonga does get cooler in the evenings in "winter" you might need a jacket, during the day shorts and t-shirts are fine as it is over 24C if your from less sun clims bring a hat/umbrella and sunsceen because fair skin will burn here but after dark it can drop into the mid teens.

This restaurant is part of the lodge and is behind the Royal Palace in the heart of Nuku'alofa. The food portion is definately palangi size, but the taste of the food is outstanding. It's not a large restaurant and has an unusual indigenous Pacific feel with decor ranging from Paul Gaugan (Tahiti) to Indigenous Australian Aboriginal Art. I would recommend this place for a coffee or lunch.

Roby Anne's presents well and has a quiet relaxing atmosphere. The prices reflect that management want Roby Anne's to be perceived as fine dining. The pricing reflects this intent also with the most expensive meal listed at $45TOP we chose cheaper options as we wanted a light lunch. The meals included fish and chips ($14TOP), and Jamaican Jerk Chicken ($22). The food was presented nicely but it wasn't great. The fish was slightly underdone and the chicken appeared to rest upon a bed of microwaved mash which was dry around the edges. The chicken was lovely and moist and the service was friendly. Of note, the menu includes another grilled fish option in the vicinity of $30TOP which is served with fries. The wait staff were unable to inform us of the difference of the meals other than the grill vs battered obviousness. We chose the cheaper option. We were unable to find value in the more expensive option.

We were only here for two nights before leaving for Vava'u. Unfortunately that was a Saturday and Sunday. We arrived in the evening on Saturday. On Sunday the whole country shuts down. Roby Anne's was clean and well-located. They had air conditioning and friendly staff. They did serve us breakfast on Sunday, but that was it. So it's impossible to rate their food.
