I recommend this place to those who are looking for rooms with basic necessary eg shower, toilet, kitchen (gas, plates, glasses, pan, cutlery) fridge and table. It's NOT fancy place so please do not expect anything fancy but the place will make you save a lots of money. Small shop is just opposite of the motel and 5 mints walk to the Main Street. Great bakery is around the corner. Lastly, no Aircon.

We booked via email. Reception closes at 7pm, so make sure you ask for the door entry code if you are arriving after that time. We arrived at la Tontouta at 5:30 and had intended arriving at the Anse Vata Motel before 7pm but it quickly became clear that was impossible. The owner's directions of "just follow the bus" turned out to be a bit useless. It probably helps if you actually see a bus. It might also have helped if the motel had a sign that was visible from a car approaching in the road rather than only when standing directly in front of the door. However, we later found that to be quite normal with NC hotels. It seemed a bit odd calling the place a “motel” when there was no on-site parking; we eventually found a free street parking spot in the next block. The actual room wasn’t bad for a basic New Caledonian hotel; plenty of space, a double bed and a single with a TV that had only French-language channels, a basic kitchenette with a working fridge and hot-plates and working hot water. The rooms were old and well-worn but I didn’t mind that for the price of XPF6750 (US$81, AU$96). What I did care about was my inability to sleep. The mattresses appeared to have been made in a quarry - they made rocks seem soft - and every movement of the upstairs neighbours could be traced either from the footsteps on our ceiling or the plumbing noises echoing in our bathroom. I tried both beds. In the morning I didn’t get upset when the manager asked if I had a pleasant night, but I did tell the truth. Maybe it was my bleary un-slept eyes that caused him to do the right thing and reduce the tariff. To his credit, I didn’t ask for a discount; he offered it. With softer beds this would have been a rating 3. The first thing I did after checking out was find somewhere else for our stay later in the week. I'll report on Le Pacifique separately.
