The Hotel de la Opera is located in La Candelaria, next to the Cristobal Colon Theater, in front of "Palacio San Carlos", currently headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, one block from Bolivar Square and a fifteen minutes walk to the funicular for Monserrate hill. Thanks to its strategic location, our guests can easily visit the most characteristic places of the city, for example the Gold Museum, Botero Museum, Primary Cathedral, etc. Also, many important government buildings are nearby. Walking its roads you will be part of its stories, legends and myths which are preserved in each of its houses. Questions like, why do the houses have doors of two meters? Where did Manuelita Saenz live her idyll with Simon Bolivar? Which is the window through which Simon Bolivar escaped? These are just some examples of the cultural treasures that you will find in La Candelaria.

Detailed Reviews
We had a really good four night stay at the Hotel De La Opera. The staff are all very friendly and keen to help, some speak English well, others not so much, but all try to do their best to make you happy and comfortable. The building itself is delightful, an old colonial building with courtyards and high-ceilinged rooms, ours was at the back of the property and had its own small balcony to watch the world do by from. Our room was comfortable, with air conditioning, mini safe, large wardrobe and mini bar. If you are a light sleeper, you may not enjoy it as much as we did as the plumbing is quite noisy and there is a fair bit of noise from the surrounding streets, but we had double glazing which reduced a lot of it. The bed was large and comfortable, and the room had good Wi-Fi. The housekeeping is of a high standard, bar they missed putting out clean glasses several times. There was also an old stain on one of the chairs. The bathroom was tiny with a sink, toilet and shower (which tended to flood) all in a space slightly larger than the wardrobe. TV channels are all Colombian, bat CNN. The Reception staff are very efficient and we had a very smooth check in and check out, with an accurate bill and an emailed receipt. The breakfast offering is very good, with cereal, fruit, juices, cheese, meats and eggs made to order. We ate in both restaurants in the hotel, the food is good but quite fancy dishes which were tasty, but a little bit much if you want something plain or light. The service was good. The Hotel De La Opera is ideally located, few minutes from the main sights of cultural Bogota, in the historic Candelaria district. There is a spa and small pool but you need to book ahead to access it, so it is not overcrowded. The local area is fine during the day, but we were warned not to walk about it at night. We enjoyed our time in this hotel and would recommend it as a base to see the city.

For the price of about $100 a night, this hotel exceeded our expectations with spacious rooms, quality service, and a restaurant/bar. (Our expectations may have been lowered by a few nights in Cartagena before, though.) We booked because of its unparalleled location at a decent price and were really impressed by the quality. The only drawback is we had a first-floor room, which has more street noise and noise from the restaurant.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. Our room was very quiet and had everything that we needed. It is a lovely quaint building and is in the perfect location for visiting the old town. Although there are many restaurants nearby we only ate out at one as were slightly nervous of venturing too far at night - maybe it was unfounded but we ate a couple of evening meals at the hotel - both of which were good. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.
We have no idea what we paid for our stay at the hotel as it was part of our package from the UK.

The location was good for walking to all the museums, major squares, shops and restaurants in La Candelaria. The staff was very nice, professional and helpful. The rooms are basic with NO air conditioning! We were in the main/first floor so could not open the windows since people could see in and it would be loud. The room was very hot and stuffy, they gave us a fan but did not really help. The rooms are around a center courtyard which is pretty but becomes very loud, especially when people are in the restaurant located in the center. The Christmas dinner buffet was very overpriced and food was subpar with few options and bad service. If it wasn’t for the location and staff I would have given it one star.

1. I understand that, visiting Colombia, it is my responsibility to be able to communicate with people we meet in Spanish .... but maybe not in a five-star hotel. A hotel where no one in the front desk is able to speak rudimentary English does not deserve five stars
2. I understand that hotels have check-in times, in this case 3 pm. But is it too much to ask for a little flexibility? We had a tour starting at 3 pm, and I asked if I could get a room at 2:50 pm to leave my luggage in the room and my money in the safe. The front desk person rudely pointed to the 3 pm check-in sign, without any attempt at an explanation (or a smile). Surely they had to have some rooms ready at 2:50m! A hotel that is so disrespectful of client wishes does not deserve five stars
3. The bathroom left much to be desired. The toilet was leaking, so I had to open the tank to push the flapper down after each use. The shower faucet was loose and came off the first time I used it. A hotel that forces customers to open the toilet tank after every use does not deserve five stars.
4. Bogota is blessed with pleasant temperatures most days of the year. Hotels generally do not have heating. Unfortunately, we were in Bogota during a rare cold spell, and we were cold in the room for our two nights. Does a hotel that leaves its customers freezing in their rooms deserve five stars? It would be so easy and inexpensive to provide portable electric heaters upon request.
Yes, the location is great.

Our rooms are in constant maintenance to ensure that they are in perfect condition when delivering them to our visitors. When we have unexpected problems, we fix it immediately. And also ALL our rooms have heating, unless four ones that are extremely hot, and it has the opportunity to have air conditioning. All our reception staff speak English and also our Concierge, who speaks English and French, so is surprising for us that you had troubles with the language, We hope to see you in another opportunity, Best regards,

This is not a 5 star hotel. In world terms it would rate 2/3, having said that in some areas it was excellent.
The location is unbeatable if you want to visit historic Bogota and for that reason we would recommend it to travellers without hesitation.
We had a 7th floor ‘art deco suite’, it was large and very quiet. The bed was too firm and the dated bathroom had an almost useless shower.
The breakfast was acceptable but nothing more.
We ate twice in the upstairs restaurant, our light lunch was very good but the evening meal awful, it was amazing to get inedible mashed potato!!
One final positive, the staff were in every situation smiling, friendly and helpful.

Whilst the location of the hotel is great for the centre of Bogota we did not enjoy the hotel. We arrived late at night and were asked if the room was OK but as it was late did not realise it would not be possible to have the window open without every pedestrian in the busy street seeing inside the room therefore no natural light. Also during the day very loud music was playing inside the hotel. Breakfast was very average in my opinion based on our experiences of other Colombian hotels. On check out you are asked to fill out a questionnaire in front of the receptionist which was awkward. I tried to make these comments but they were being translated into Spanish by the spellchecker making no sense. Perhaps a different room may have made a difference but I would not choose to stay here again.

This is a lovely hotel and from our experience not at all shabby or dirty. Staff are very friendly and despite limited English for them and limited Spanish for us we had no problems. Our room in the newer part of the hotel was spacious, a large safe. Fluffy towels and plenty of toiletries. A lovely view across roof tops, part of the city and the mountains. The thermal pool and sauna were a great way of relaxing after being out with the crowds and the heat. Only disappointment was it is closed all day on a Monday which after a long day of exploring was a bit annoying. Breakfast consists of the usual fruits, cereals, meats, cakes, jellies, breads and hot egg station, juices and tea, coffee and chocolate. It was quiet but only a minutes walk from the main square.

This hotel is perfect in so many ways. The location is fantastic, with many museums, restaurants, stores, historical sites and markets within the la Candelaria section of town. We found it walkable to Monserrate as well. The hotel is gorgeous, with comfortable areas within to dine, swim, read books and enjoy balcony views of the street. Nearby restaurants we recommend include Dona Manuela and Chamarico, both just down the street. All in all, a great place at an incredible value.

We had a lovely 3-night stay at the Hotel de La Opera in May, located in a restored building right next to the old Theater Colon in la Candelaria. Its location, on a pedestrian street, is fantastic—just a block from the Plaza de Bolivar and within easy walking distance of other historic buildings, as well as the Gold and Botero Museums. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. The front desk was helpful in making recommendations and reservations, arranging transport from the airport and helping us in other ways. We highly recommend staying in la Candelaria to get an appreciation of Bogota’s history and Hotel de la Opera is an excellent choice for your accommodation.
