I am a repeat visitor to the Mt. Zion Hotel, first because of the warm hospitality and great staff and service (starting from reservations to front desk, cleaning, restaurant and bar staff); and second because of the great location and breathtaking views of the Old City and Mt. Zion. You know you are in Jerusalem! The location is excellent as you can walk into Jerusalem Center, the Old City or closer by the First Station with restaurants, crafts and entertainment as well as the residential neighborhoods of "Ba'aka" and the "German Colony". However, on my recent stay, I finally had a wonderful opportunity to get a better understanding of the history of the Mt. Zion Hotel from the lovely night manager, Tarek Awedah. He took the time to show me what is probably the best kept secret, the Cable Car Museum, located in the Mt. Zion Hotel (and open to the public).
You can actually see one of the original cable cars which was from the War of Independence and was a link between Mt. Zion and the Western Section of Jerusalem. The little Museum also tells the history of the hotel building which was first built in 1882 as a hospitable for rare eye diseases. Seeing the old photos of the original building one can really appreciate what makes the Mt. Zion Hotel so special.

This is an unusual hotel outside the old city. Unique in that the lobby and entrance are on the 6thfloor which is at street level. It is an older building that fits architecturally in its location. The hotel is clean, the staff personable and the location is good.
The rooms are clean although sparsly furnished. Breakfast buffet has a large variety that would satisfy most ethnic requirements (egg station cook needs a bit more experience).
My only poor observation here is that the place looks shopworn. Additionally it does not seem as though maintenance takes any pride in its work. Bath fixtures are loose, caulking around sinks and tub is sloppy and the toilet seat either crashes down or hits you in the back.
I would sincerely recommend a thorough inspection and general spiff up.

Hotel with a great location but quite a bit run down. Rooms leave much to be desired... Sparse, worn furniture, old carpets. Sheets aren't the best. Bathrooms are nice. Housekeeping cleaned up pretty well. Breakfast is plentiful but not as tasty as one might hope. Staff are indifferent, pretty much par for the course for Israel. Fitness center has a few machines and is good enough but it is only open 8 to 6, not conducive to getting a workout before or after the work day. Hotel seems to cater to large tourists groups. There are much better places to stay in Jerusalem for the money.

The rooms were okay but could use a better cleaning. The furniture was dated and looked like it should replaced. My wife thought it was cute and in an old Jerusalem style. The sheets were clean but we did notice small holes in the sheets. We both severely disappointed with the quality of the food. The Friday night dinner was 260 NIS per person and looked below the level of cafeteria food. My wife pointed out that the fish looked like someone forgot to wash it before they cooked it. We walked out without tasting anything. We asked for and received a refund for the dinner. Breakfast was included in our reservation on the first day some of the items did not appear fresh on the buffet so we chose the items that looked okay. On Sunday there were birds flying in the dining room. Note this is not an outdoor patio this is indoors. It appeared as if this was the same buffet as Saturday when I say the same buffet I mean the exact same food. the cucumber started looking translucent, the red pepper was dry they cheeses had a hard crust (you know when you slice cheese and forget to put it back in the fridge overnight) I think it may be because it was Sunday and there were very few guests. Most people leave on Saturday night. I don't know for a fact that the food was old I can only give you my impression. without the food I would say it is a 3 star hotel with a wonderful view and a great location

Mount Zion Hotel derives its name from Mount Zion, which is a historic area near the Old City that features in the Bible. The hotel is a tourist class hotel, where prices are moderate. Hotels in Jerusalem are no longer cheap.

This booking was made by our tour group after the Dan Pamorama ran out of rooms, so my expectations were low. However, I was not prepared for the mess that greeted me after checking in to this hotel.

Although we paid quite a bit of money extra for an "upgrade", the first room that they gave us was totally unacceptable. It was dark, dingy, and smelled moldy. In addition, there was a view of garbage through the window.

The second room was a "suite" and somewhat better, but the airconditioning didn't work. When we compained, they told us that it was too late to get someone to repair it. The next day, after spending a sleepless night, they told us it was unrepairable and they moved us to another "suite".

Maintainence at this hotel is terrible. The halls and lobby are dirty. The hotel leaves several exit doors to the outside open most of the time, so many people from our group complained of roaches and ants.

Of the people from our group who stayed here(5 nights), about half suffered food poisening, and one woman was so ill that she required a medical consultation, and then was sent home.

Needless to say, you should avoid staying here.

I stayed in Jerusalem for 3 nights, all of which were at this hotel.

LOCATION
The location is problematic. Its close to East Jerusalem and many theives walk around at night. Cars are stolen on a regular basis and since the hotel has no parking of its own, parking your own car over night is not an option at all (even the hotel warned us about this). Other than that, most hotels are more central and you'll probably be needing a taxi/car unless you like to walk a lot.

PUBLIC PLACES
The lobby is quite small with a very nice view. Unfortunately it is unlit and very dark. After 7 pm you won't see the person sitting next to you. The have a snack bar offering mediocre food and drinks at expensive prices.
The pool is quite nice but the experience is badly ruined by the catastrophic showers/toilets. They are full of cockroaches and totally worn down. I doubt they are ever cleaned. A real shame.
There is also a nice looking spa & gym, but I did not go there.

ROOMS
Rooms have bugs and insects in them. I stayed at the 2nd floor and saw cockroaches in the corridor! My room had a lizard in it... The walls were paperthin. You'll hear your neighbours very easily and vice versa. Luckily this hotel has low occupancy so most likely there'll be no body around you.
The furniture is cheap and old. I would expect to find such items at pawn shops. The bathroom seemed to be in good shape, and the maids did a decent job.

STAFF & SERVICE
The people at the reception were quite unwelcoming (except for one or two), but they did whatever you asked them to.
The waiters in the dining room were alright. Too bad the food was bad. Overall the staff is very felt throughout the hotel. They tend to shout to one another in the hallways and seem indifferent to the fact that guests are around.

FOOD
I only ate breakfast. This was nowhere near the famous "Israeli breakfast buffet" I have heard about. Food wasn't fresh, especially the fruits & vegetables. Beverages were extremely limited with a disgusting orange juice and terribly poor coffee.
By the time I came (8am), some of the "hot" dishes were already cold and tasteless.

INTERNET
There are 2 obsolete 1990's Internet stations at an outragious price of 6$ per hour. They also had wifi for something like 20$ a day with most other places offering it for FREE.

OVERALL
This certainly is better than a 2-star hotel but deserves nothing more than the 3-stars it gets. A very overpriced mediocre hotel.
I should have seen the other reviews before booking into this place.

The hotel staff was very accomodating, the restaurant staff very friendly. The room and bath were a little small but no more than many European rooms. Security was outstanding and I felt totally safe. The hotel was clean, breakfast was okay. I would stay here again because of the location, the ambiance and the staff.

I visited the hotel as part of a tour group for 4 days in November, 2005.

Its a small-medium hotel with a very middle eastern feel to it: decorations, colors, furnitures, etc.
The building itself is very old and while they try to renovate it, it still shows in many places.

The room I got was small but functional. Unfortunately I had no special view but many rooms have views to the old city walls.

I was bothered with many things being too dirty. The carpets are in bad overall shape throughout the entire place and some open employee places throughout the hallways look way too ugly. The lifts are also very tired with doors constantly opening and closing with the elevator stuck on the same floor.

I even heard one of my group say she saw a rat in the dining room, but I can't comment on it.

I did enjoy the service however, the staff were efficient especially the front desk and the guards.
My room was cleaned every day and if I asked for towels they arrived quickly.
Food was generally quite good, although breakfast food wasn't freshly made.

The hotel has some very nice gardens outside and a swimming pool which was closed. There is a bar at the lobby but prices are expensive and food was so-so.

If they renovated the place and kept it in better shape and cleaner I think it would be a good option, but currently I would think twice before returning.

This hotel is directly opposite the St Andrew's Church and hotel, which has a Scottish flag flying from it - most appropriate for this visitor, who had a single room (which could easily take two) in the Citadel section of the hotel. The room had a view of Mount Zion, the Mount of Olives, and the Old City, and it was worth paying extra just for the view. The room itself was no more than adequate but you'll not be in there long enough to be concerned. It was cleaned every day. There was constant hot water and the shower pressure was very strong. Breakfast was excellent, and you can eat enough then to keep you going till dinner. The steam room, fitness centre and swimming pool are just fine, and you can have a massage if you feel like it. The hotel itself is worth an investigation, made up as it is of different architectures. The hotel's location made walking to the main sites of Jerusalem possible, but beware of the taxi drivers outside - make sure you agree a price before you get in the taxi! Hotel staff were very helpful, but you'll have to get used to the different culture(s) in the country, and different ways of behaving. All in all, a fine hotel, and not one of the chains where you could be anywhere in the world. With this hotel you know that you're in the Near East, and Jerusalem in particular.

I don't know about the fitness center specifically, but we found everything in this hotel to be old and outdated. Perhaps call and ask or you may find yourself disappointed.

Ask the hotel- they’ll know which rooms have views ( I presume you mean views of the the city of Jerusalem). Generally you pay more for such rooms. Ours were on the same floor as the lobby and had great views.

I think not, as to both of those items. But why not email the hotel and ask them directly. It's possible that some of their rooms have these things.
