You can actually see one of the original cable cars which was from the War of Independence and was a link between Mt. Zion and the Western Section of Jerusalem. The little Museum also tells the history of the hotel building which was first built in 1882 as a hospitable for rare eye diseases. Seeing the old photos of the original building one can really appreciate what makes the Mt. Zion Hotel so special.
The rooms are clean although sparsly furnished. Breakfast buffet has a large variety that would satisfy most ethnic requirements (egg station cook needs a bit more experience).
My only poor observation here is that the place looks shopworn. Additionally it does not seem as though maintenance takes any pride in its work. Bath fixtures are loose, caulking around sinks and tub is sloppy and the toilet seat either crashes down or hits you in the back.
I would sincerely recommend a thorough inspection and general spiff up.
Although we paid quite a bit of money extra for an "upgrade", the first room that they gave us was totally unacceptable. It was dark, dingy, and smelled moldy. In addition, there was a view of garbage through the window.
The second room was a "suite" and somewhat better, but the airconditioning didn't work. When we compained, they told us that it was too late to get someone to repair it. The next day, after spending a sleepless night, they told us it was unrepairable and they moved us to another "suite".
Maintainence at this hotel is terrible. The halls and lobby are dirty. The hotel leaves several exit doors to the outside open most of the time, so many people from our group complained of roaches and ants.
Of the people from our group who stayed here(5 nights), about half suffered food poisening, and one woman was so ill that she required a medical consultation, and then was sent home.
Needless to say, you should avoid staying here.
LOCATION
The location is problematic. Its close to East Jerusalem and many theives walk around at night. Cars are stolen on a regular basis and since the hotel has no parking of its own, parking your own car over night is not an option at all (even the hotel warned us about this). Other than that, most hotels are more central and you'll probably be needing a taxi/car unless you like to walk a lot.
PUBLIC PLACES
The lobby is quite small with a very nice view. Unfortunately it is unlit and very dark. After 7 pm you won't see the person sitting next to you. The have a snack bar offering mediocre food and drinks at expensive prices.
The pool is quite nice but the experience is badly ruined by the catastrophic showers/toilets. They are full of cockroaches and totally worn down. I doubt they are ever cleaned. A real shame.
There is also a nice looking spa & gym, but I did not go there.
ROOMS
Rooms have bugs and insects in them. I stayed at the 2nd floor and saw cockroaches in the corridor! My room had a lizard in it... The walls were paperthin. You'll hear your neighbours very easily and vice versa. Luckily this hotel has low occupancy so most likely there'll be no body around you.
The furniture is cheap and old. I would expect to find such items at pawn shops. The bathroom seemed to be in good shape, and the maids did a decent job.
STAFF & SERVICE
The people at the reception were quite unwelcoming (except for one or two), but they did whatever you asked them to.
The waiters in the dining room were alright. Too bad the food was bad. Overall the staff is very felt throughout the hotel. They tend to shout to one another in the hallways and seem indifferent to the fact that guests are around.
FOOD
I only ate breakfast. This was nowhere near the famous "Israeli breakfast buffet" I have heard about. Food wasn't fresh, especially the fruits & vegetables. Beverages were extremely limited with a disgusting orange juice and terribly poor coffee.
By the time I came (8am), some of the "hot" dishes were already cold and tasteless.
INTERNET
There are 2 obsolete 1990's Internet stations at an outragious price of 6$ per hour. They also had wifi for something like 20$ a day with most other places offering it for FREE.
OVERALL
This certainly is better than a 2-star hotel but deserves nothing more than the 3-stars it gets. A very overpriced mediocre hotel.
I should have seen the other reviews before booking into this place.
Its a small-medium hotel with a very middle eastern feel to it: decorations, colors, furnitures, etc.
The building itself is very old and while they try to renovate it, it still shows in many places.
The room I got was small but functional. Unfortunately I had no special view but many rooms have views to the old city walls.
I was bothered with many things being too dirty. The carpets are in bad overall shape throughout the entire place and some open employee places throughout the hallways look way too ugly. The lifts are also very tired with doors constantly opening and closing with the elevator stuck on the same floor.
I even heard one of my group say she saw a rat in the dining room, but I can't comment on it.
I did enjoy the service however, the staff were efficient especially the front desk and the guards.
My room was cleaned every day and if I asked for towels they arrived quickly.
Food was generally quite good, although breakfast food wasn't freshly made.
The hotel has some very nice gardens outside and a swimming pool which was closed. There is a bar at the lobby but prices are expensive and food was so-so.
If they renovated the place and kept it in better shape and cleaner I think it would be a good option, but currently I would think twice before returning.
"Get a room with a the outside view of the valley and the Mt. Zion Church. Hopefully the rooms will be more modern and cleaner.(!)"Read full review
