I really enjoyed my stay here in East Jerusalem at Mount of Olives. The people are wonderfully kind, a huge place with only four nuns and staff. They have a great sense of humour too, always helps. This is a large, stone, rather austere looking building but it is very warm thanks to the residents. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very clean, so is the whole building. There are no phones or TV in the rooms and they do not speak English, take your french dictionary, Sister Ana speaks Spanish (she should, she is Spanish).
It takes about 10 minutes by bus or taxi to the Old City (the walk is more like half an hour). The bus is a 3 minute walk to the stop and costs about $1. Strongly recommend staying in the main building and not the chalets, worth the difference. Food is optional for breakfast and/or dinner, it's fairly average but fine.
A nice surprise was the availability of Beer and Wine, wine around $10-12 a bottle, good Taybeh beer $3.50. It is kept in a cold cooler in the dining area. The only good white wine of the various 'Domaine de Latroune' is the chardonnay, the others rather more like 'Domaine De Latrine'
The rooftop view is fantastic, the best view of the old city one could imagine. The grounds are lovely and peaceful.
Support these people my friends, they are wonderful, it is cheap and excellent.

This is the sort of eclectic place that we love. The accommodations are basic, the staff is very nice, and don't believe what people tell you about Sister Anna. The property is a bit hard to find in the Palestinian part of Jerusalem. We took a cab from the bus station and initially spoke to a Jewish driver who said he could not take us there, but he pointed us to a Palestinian driver who could. Welcome to the international politics of Jerusalem, the most contested real estate on the face of the earth. The property is a short walk through the mount of olives to the Lion gate in the old city. The last few blocks go through an area some might consider sketchy, but we experienced no problems walking to and from the old city, just know that on the return trip you have a hefty hill to scale to get to the hostel. The grounds provided a great escape from the hectic pace of Jerusalem and provided outstanding views of the old city. They sell bottles of Israeli wine and we suggest you enjoy one with your significant other while viewing the old city at night.

When we booked this, I thought FRENCH monastery, the food is going to be GREAT. Well not so much. The food will sustain you but that is all, don't expect haute cuisine here. You will find interesting conversation at the table as the sisters will attempt to seat people by language(s) spoken.

We had a wonderful stay here, the compound is beautiful and peaceful, and the location is a 15 minute walk from Lion Gate into the Old City. There's a lounge for guests and a stunning garden, also there's a wonderful view of Jerusalem from the roof. The rooms were clean and basic, exactly what we wanted, and so much better than a hostel!

Maison d'Abraham is on the second hill of the area called Mount of Olives, called Rus el-Amoud. If you go there, and ask a taxi to take you to Maison d'Abraham on the Mount of Olives, they won't know where you mean, and will drop you on the wrong hill. The walk over is very steep.

This hostel is not really a hostel, it's a Catholic retreat location that might remind you of a run-down, "rustic," summer camp with trailers for "bungalows." They are not really prepared to assist with tourism or any logistical amenities one usually finds at a hostel. In my opinion it's overpriced. If you want to be near things, and plan to see Jerusalem on your own I'd refer you to one of the hostels near the Old City. (Seeing the Holy Land on your own is also not recommended, it's very confusing and the people are not particularly helpful - they're on-edge and constantly overrun with tourists, so I get it.)

Maison d'Abraham is run by a rude nun named Sister Ana, she wouldn't let us get dinner on a Friday night (when everything is the city is closed) because we hadn't asked her in time, though the cooks and rest of the staff said it was fine. All of the staff you'd see most of the time are wonderfully kind French people. They even tried to speak a little English with the preson with me who didn't speak French. But they absolutely had their hands tied by Sr. Ana. The trailers that serve as rooms are falling apart, and we brought back bedbugs. THey were hot, but to open the doors invited every insect imaginable inside, including gigantic ants. Almost nothing went smoothly there. Especially trying to get back at night. Jewish taxi drivers did not want to take me through the neighborhood - one actually left me, a young woman alone, on the wrong hill in the middle of the night because HE didn't "feel safe." So get a Palestinian taxi driver. Though from the Old City it's a relatively easy though long walk along the main road. The person I was with who looks extremely American made the mistake to get of cutting through a neighborhood to walk back at dusk and had kids throwing rocks at him and trying to jump him. of course, that's not the hostel's fault, but it's certainly something anyone going there should know.

Of course, it's beautiful, as the others said. Hearing the call to prayer around 8pm was magic. And it's quiet, so if that's what you're looking for this may be the place for you. We're more active and adventurous, with on-the-go vacations, this was not the place for that.

The main take-away is: this is not a regular hostel - it's an out-of-the-way Catholic retreat center that seems to be supplementing its income by allowing tourists there when they're not full. They cannot and will not accomodate tourism assitance. One of the nice French people working there showed us how to take the bus from where we were to the Old City and beyond, which was very helpful. But that was all they could really do, and Jerusalem kind of needs more guidance than that. I live in a serisously under-developped country in Noth-West Africa, and have travelled a bit, so I'm not just saying that. I really believe it's true.

Hope this helps. And have fun!

La Maison d"Abraham is a Catholic Guesthouse with a beautiful location and a tradition which says that 2000 years ago the High Priestly Party met to consider ways to put Jesus to death and thus the hill on which it stands is called the "Hill of Evil Counsel". The Guesthouse is very basic with rooms which are ample but large with bathroom facilities. The service is good and friendly with food of a very simple standard but tasty and sufficient for anyone who likes French
cuisine. The Guesthouse overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem with beautiful views round about
which more than make up for the about 30 minutes walk to the Lion Gate but also called but also called St, Stephen Gate. Not many people know about this place so that it is rather difficult to find but it is near "Ras el Amud" and an Arab hotel which is called Hotel Panorama. It certainly is well worth a visit and for such people who are not too fussy and who do not have trouble in walking via the rather steep hill through the Mount of Olives to and from the Guesthouse the stay there can be quite an experience.

I Stayed here because I couldn't get any accomadation in the old city. We booked 3 nights and ended up coming back for 3 more!!!! The Building its self is very simple and basic, but the atmosphere and view make up for any luxury lost.
The staff and sisters are wonderful but mostly just speak french, but we managed. The rates are good and include breakfast. The breakfast is very hearty and plentyful.
We had dinner a few nights which was surprisingly good, and had a wine list!!
The guest house is about 15minutes walk from the Dung gate, and maybe 10 from the lions gate. we had a hire car but chose to walk in. I found the area it is in a little intimadating at first as it is a mainly Palestinian, but in fact no one did or said anything to us.
I cannot recomment this place higly enough, I just loved it!!

We have stayed here for four nights with 8 persons. It is a sober but very nice place to stay. It lays on top of a hill very near by the mount olive (they say it is a part of the mount olive) Sober but good rooms, very good beds. Breakfast is sober but OK. From the shadowed garden, sitting on benches you have the most beautifull view on the old city you can inmagine! It is very nice sitting there in the evening, drinking a glass of wine listening to the sounds of te city. From the location it's a 15 minutes save and nice walk to the old city. The people of the hospice are very friendly and helpfull. They arranged transport to Masada & the Dead Sea and the airport. We paid for 4 double rooms, 4 nights and breakfast 825 euros.

High on the Mt of Olives, surrounded by trees and fencing is an old monastery that has been turned into a hostel of sorts. It is run by French sisters. There are rooms in the building and little family cabins in the back. It is clean, comfortable and safe. It is quiet on the premises, but when you open the windows, the noise from the old city goes on way into the night. There is free parking and breakfast. We had boiled eggs, cheese, leben, tomatoes, jam, pocket bread and juice/tea/coffee. Internet is 6 shekels but only worked in the lobby. The door is open 24 hours and there is a person on duty at the desk. The town is called Ras-el-Amud and a map may be found at the site: www.masion-abraham.com/Acces.htm The staff was pleasant; we did not see any of the French speaking nuns. There is no phone, TV or air conditioning in the room. The rooms are up a long flight of stairs and there are no elevators. The shower is very small and the curtain does not go down far enough to keep the floor from getting wel. But if you are willing to put up with these "hardships" it is a good place to stay. The view of the old city from the ground floor patio is very good.

Love these no frill, guest houses. So large and airy, with so much character.
Large rooms with bathroom facilities. Availability of meals- room & breakfast, or half service- room, breakfast & dinner or full service- room and meals. Very simple, nutritious meals in true French cuisine.
Location is okay - 10 minute walk to Old City or Taxi service on adjacent road. Bus No 5 from Bus Stop opposite Damascus gate @ 5 shekels.

The place is difficult to find and many taxi drivers don't know it so tell the driver it's in Ras al Amud in Palestinian part of Jerusalem, aside from Mount of Olives. Hostel has fantastic location with outstanding views of Old City and Temple Mount in particular. It takes only about 15 minutes to walk to the closest Old City gate. For this location it is a bargain.
Rooms in a main building differ substantially so be careful: we were sent to to a quadruple with old, rugged bathroom. Fortunately on our first day electricity broke down- there was no light in half of the apartment so we were offered two doubles with renovated corridors and bathrooms. Rooms are very spacious and have high ceilings. There are also bungalows but I haven't seen them.
The principal downfall of the place is attitude of nuns. Majority of the ones I had contact with (except one in charge of reservations and payments) don't speak English or they pretend they don't. They should not run the guesthouse, should they. My basic knowledge of French didn't make things better. They were rough and unpleasant. One morning we were late for breakfast and overstayed (mea culpa): breakfast hours are early 7:00 to 8:00 so we were kicked out from the dining room efective immediately (I asked for 10 minutes to finish our meal and was refused!). On Christmas day we prepared our own food with staff brought from home- we were inpolitely, witout any explanation, sent out from dining room to eat in a library and they didn't let us take plates from the cupboard!
Other staff (locals), i.e.porters, were nice and helpful.
Breakfast was tastless and poor choice. Hotel prepares dinner but we didn't try it.
The main building lacks open kitchen.
