Upon my arrival, the on-site concierge Ahmet helped me with my luggage and made me a delicious cup of tea. He spent 10 minutes of his time showing me places on the map, how to get around the city, and how to avoid pickpockets. He was the most helpful and friendly hotel owner I have ever met. The hotel itself... More

Ahmet met me by name and offered right away to sit down with me to go over a map of the area. He explained how to get everywhere by public transport and highlighted a route that hit all of the must see Istanbul sights. The room was clean, the air conditioning functioned well, the shower was hot. The lobby of... More

We were pleasantly surprised from the moment we arrived at the hotel. Our host, gave us so many details about the location, how to get around, where to go and hints for visits. We had a quadruple room at the third floor and it was just as described on the website. The room was clean and spacious, with A/C, bright... More

An excellent budget hotel for the price. Very clean room with excellent bed, excellent bathroom with full size glass shower cabin, great hot water pressure. Those features are hard to find in Istanbul at that price. Tasty, basic breakfast in the hotel restaurant room. Please note there is no elevator in the hotel. Location in the center of Fatih, about... More

Friendly staff and clean rooms. The breakfast was good and filling. We found it an easy walk (15-20 minutes) to the more touristy areas like the Blue Mosque. It was also fairly easy to find coming back, which is a major plus! The area the Lotus is in is interesting too though, with some nearby shops and little restaurants. There... More

Staying at the Lotus was one of the best decisions we made in Istanbul, as it let us experience some of Istanbul’s local life: as the sun sets, old men chat outside cafes blaring the football match, children play in the street, and the call to prayer is broadcast in stereo from at least five surrounding mosques. Staying at this... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighborhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
