In Besiktas, skyscrapers compete with palaces for space in an upscale vista replete with hilly green parkland filling in the margins. Step into this rather wealthy neighborhood and discover a rich mix of opportunities to shop, dine, and be entertained. For folks in search of urban buzz, not to mention a constant reminder of just how important Istanbul’s waterways are to its rich history, there's the frenetic Besiktas ferry terminal or the city’s most vibrant fish market to explore. For a timeout of metropolitan proportions, head to the bucolic Yildiz Park or the chic Bosphorus-side fishing village of Ortakoy. Attractions such as the grandiose Dolmabahce Palace and a bevy of other stately residences await admiration. To be sure, this large and not overly touristy swath of Istanbul yields plenty of pleasure for all.

My family and I traveled to Istanbul in July of this year, and this was the only hotel we stayed at for the duration of the trip (which was 7 days). At first we reserved a regular "suite", but when we arrived there the only suite thing about it was the kitchen counter and the washing machine. It was basically one big room, and since the kids were with us, we found that a bit of an issue when it came to sleeping arrangements. However, the thing that made me change rooms is the fact that it was below street level, so the four windows this room had could allow anyone to look down if they wanted to. So, we opted for an upgrade: Room 702. We stayed there during our trip in 2013, and this was a real suite. Although smaller than usual, one thing made this a good deal despite its hefty price: a balcony with a spectacular view of the Bosphorus. The family and I would chill there after our outing until the sun sets over the beautiful horizon. That alone made this room upgrade well worth it. Of course, there are other positives here, such as friendly and competent staff, reasonably priced Italian cuisine from the hotel's restaurant, and the peace and quiet of a posh neighborhood. Just around the corner one may find restaurants and coffee shops fit for all tastes, which are usually frequented by locals looking for a relaxing environment to spend the rest of the day in. As for the Cons: at the time the living room's AC cover was broken and taped together. Also, the AC remote was missing. There were much less international TV channels in comparison to the last time we stayed there 5 years ago. The only other Con I can think of is the price, but that is relative I suppose. Oh, wait. The elevator stops at the 6th Floor, so you will have to take a couple of short stairwells to reach this room. Therefore, if you have a lot of stuff to carry upstairs, just take that into consideration. All in all, this hotel is one of my favorite lodgings in Istanbul, thanks to Room 702!
