This was our 3rd visit to Empress Zoe, our first 10 years ago, then a visit last year and a very recent return trip this year. This is my all time favourite hotel anywhere, and a decision to pay a visit to Istanbul is influenced by the chance to stay here again. The location is perfect, the garden delightful, the... More

This was our return trip to Istanbul for 5 days in the beginning of July after being last there 15 years ago. We chose Empress Zoe for its very convenient location in walking to Hagia Sophia and the other cultural attractions. We tend to stay in boutique hotels and B&Bs and this hotel has the best of both. The rooms... More

We splurged on the Empress Zoe, with the penthouse room. We were not disappointed. It's a small pensione style hotel, more like a B&B really, with unique rooms with traditional furnishings that charmed us. If you like big box hotels this is not for you. There are lots of stairs and it is an old building. But we like that... More

You cannot go wrong with Empress Zoe! We are frequent travellers and visited many years ago - in February 2009, and think about it often to this day. Especially the yummy breakfast and the wonderful hospitality. Not to mention the fantastic location.

Charming little hotel in the old part of Istanbul within walking distance of main attractions. Very hospitable and helpful staff. Lovely traditional breakfast in their beautiful garden, complete with resident cats to entertain! I could have spent all day there. I guess the only issue would be the stairs. My room was on the top floor. Fortunately, staff helped me... More

If you don't like cats or spiral staircases, don't stay here. If you like unique rooms, and a hotel close to the main tourist attractions this is your hotel. We spent 3 nights here in the old part of the hotel, in a double room, a queen bed and a turkish bath in one, and 2 twins with a modern... More

I am CRAZY about this cute hotel, an old hammam, .........so charming and lovely and very very Turkish with loads of ambiance and lovely decor. Gorgeous rooms, but stay in the rooftop suite if you can. The location is in the heart of the Sultanahmet, close to the Hagia Sophia and the blue Mosque, so you wake up to the... More

We all just loved this charming hotel in a quiet corner of old Istanbul, not far from Topkapi palace and Hagia Sophia. The owners have a wonderful sense of artistic detail. There is a delightful garden where you can have breakfast or just unwind, as well as a friendly indoor breakfast area. The breakfast was delicious, with fresh fruit, olives,... More

A fabulous small traditional hotel in the heart of Istanbul. We had an amazing room with a private terrace, traditional fireplace and marble shower room. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and all was as we expected from looking at their website before we had booked. The breakfast was lovely especially as we were able to have it in... We loved everything about our stay at Empress Zoe. I was travelling with my adult children, we stayed in one of the suites which had the bonus of two balconies, one looking out over the Bosporus and the other with views of Aya Sophia and the Sultan Ahmet Camii. With its polished wooden floors, marble bathrooms, quirky passages, garden area... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
