I stayed at the Ayasofya Hotel for the second time in July. It was great to stay in such a comfortable place - the beds and even the pillows were wonderful. The room was super clean and the air conditioning worked perfectly. We could walk everywhere and easily hop on the tram. The hotel is very close to the old... More

I had stayed here 12 years ago and this time around the Ayasofya was even more charming than before. A truly enchanting place to stay in Sultanahmet, the Ayasofya is within easy walking distance of the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, and the tram. Gaye and Greg are wonderful, friendly hosts and very knowledgeable about restaurants,... More

While we didn't see Gaye much, we spoke with Greg every morning at breakfast and he was very helpful and informative about things to do in the city. The room was quite nice for the price and had a very cool Ottoman vibe. Also the hotel was very conveniently located, within walking distance of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.... More

What a wonderful place. The hotel is an historic Ottoman home so the experience is truly authentic while the staff welcome you like it's their own home. Gaye and Greg (both Australians) are the perfect hosts, always there and welcoming, with an apple tea and travel tip or hint to set you on the right path for great days of... More

We stayed at Ayasofya Hotel very recently and it was a very good base amidst all the other excitement and activity of Istanbul and Turkey. It is a cozyl 21 room boutique hotel, very nicely located a short walk from the Hippodrome area within historic Sultanahmet and close to the tramway public transport. Aussie hosts Gaye, Greg and the crew... More

This is a great hotel situated in the perfect position for all excursions into Istanbul's Old City- everything is walking distance (although it is also tucked away from the noise!) The city has such a great transport system you can get anywhere from anywhere- so if you want to experience the roots of Istanbul look no further for a hotel.... More

Why 3 Greats - easy, this was our third stay in 4 years. We were picked up at the airport, courtesy of the hotel and arrived late afternoon. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by Gaye and Greg as if we were good neighbors who had just returned home. The apple tea was truly appreciated after our... More

Well located near the best Istanbul's Sultanahmet district has to offer-- Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome,Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar. The room was large and comfortable, the breakfast buffet very nice but best of all was that the staff was wonderful beginning with transfer from the airport -- a welcome service after a long flight. Helpful with suggestions for tours, where... More

Istanbul was a fantastic experience, full of life, history and excitement. Gaye and Greg at the Ayosofya were both warm, easy going and extremely helpful with tips on places of interest and tours around Istanbul. They also helped with tours as we continued our trip around Turkey. Their staff could not be more pleasant. The neighbourhood of their hotel is an... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
