With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to
retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.

Couple of my Indian friends are staying there this week for ten days and I'll join them next week . This is one of my favourite hotels in old town and I'm never disappointed.... May be its worth to drop them an email to emphasise its your birthday and you'd prefer a room with balcony , if they have it you'll most likely to get it ... My room had a little balcony, it was faving the front .....
I'm excited to be going there again next week .
You'll be able to walk to most historical sites and wonderful cafes nearby....
Enjoy Istanbul. Happy birthday.

Perfectly safe. In fact I'd say all of the areas making up the Old City are perfectly safe. Personally I walked from Sultanahmet to the Fathi Mosque, Chora Church and almost everywhere else I went during my recent stay, as well as walking the entire Theodosian Wall, making sure always to keep to the back streets and alleys.
I traversed a lot of poor and run down areas and a number of areas with a high refugee population, I always walked alone and I never felt in the slightest danger. In fact I felt far more safe than in many areas in large European cities, let alone the many areas in US cities where I would never dare set foot. The worst thing that befell me was that I sometimes accepted too many glasses of tea and at times had trouble finding a convenient toilet. Hard to blame that on anyone but myself though.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that the snippets of awfulness you see on the news constitutes the full reality on the ground. If that was the case you couldn't exit the front door ever unless living in a remote wilderness.
