Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

Ah, Istnabul, the magical city! Georges Hotel, had read and heard praise about it. Was happy that we might have made the right choice. Room: # 20: We arrived at about 10:30 in the night. Mustafa, the Man-Friday, on duty. He brought the bags to the room. The room was spacious. No wardrobe. You hang your clothes over the tea/coffee making platform, in full view. The bathroom spacious, but has glass walls, with wooden louvres and were half open. I tried to close, but of no avail. We were just two of us, but then there is certain business you want do in privacy. Called the reception. Mustafa showed up, struggled, but could not fix it fully. We asked this to be done the next day. The room has a lovely balcony, overlooking the Bosporus. Lovely view. I fully agree with the previous review- the toiletries, were not replenished every day and on asking were supplied. Again, there is only one guy to do all the jobs. Restaurant: Roof top, amazing view. Our room was with breakfast. At the breakfast, the 3 waiters looked as if just out of the bed- unkempt, T-shirt buttons open, horsing around, no greetings and no smile. Looked as if they were in a roadside eatery and were doing a favour. The plates were cracked, bowls chipped, I had to return the plates twice, because something was sticking on it from the previous meal.. yuck!! The second day, I was given a bill for the breakfast. I was surprised and they said the ‘breakfast is chargeable”. Went to the reception, and the guy was of not much help. Said “he will check”. Evening, on our return, when enquired, another guy on duty said, yes the room is with breakfast. So much for professionalism! Had dinner once. The food was okay- nothing to write home about. We are vegetarians, so not much of a choice, neither was the captain of much help, to suggest, any options. Services: Totally non-existent. One day, the “clean my room” somehow, got reversed “DND”, and in the evening when we were back, to our dismay, we found that the room had not been cleaned. Asked to do it, and the reply was that after 4 pm, there are no cleaners available. And mind you there are may be just 25 rooms, not a huge place, that you don’t know your guests (because in the morning we had complained about the breakfast bill, while going out) and neither do they have an army of staff. We asked for cups, tea bags, milk. After 20 m ins wait, just the cups came. Then after another 10 mins, the tea bags and after a sound scolding, finally the milk. Phew !!! horrible, horrible horrible service. On the first day itself, we had givenour laundry. On the third day we enquired about it, and were told that it would be “tomorrow”. The next day, after coming back and the room/tea fiasco, we enquired again about the laundry. To my horror, the reply was “Sir, what did you give for laundry?” I said “some plates, spoons and forks” (dumbo, what reply did you expect?). Then, “Sir what brand were your clothes” ? No try and beat this…. I was aghast. Lost my cool, scolded him for such question. After a while, a guy comes with a crumpled shirt on a hanger and some laundry, in a basket and enquires, if this is my laundry? (and this was not) This was the last straw. The idiots, do not have a record of which laundry is from which room. I called the reception and demanded that my laundry be sent NOW, since we were checking out the next morning and the reply was “Sir, we are trying to trace it” …. Had to call the Manager, Fulya and after much dialogue at a high pitch, finally after one hour the laundry was delivered. So much for the ‘professional services’…. Absolutely deplorable and downright disgusting attitude. Check-out: Mustafa, had a perpetual scowl on this face. Fumbled and demanded the extra payment only in Euro, even though I tried to give in Turkish Lira. No bill was provided and he unethically, went on to write my credit card details, even though the payment had gone through, to which I objected and did not allow. No thank you, no bye, no smile- absolutely nothing. They don’t even any dress code- the front desk guys (always one at any point of time) are always casually dressed and so is the attitude. The most horrible experience, and would neither ever think of going again nor would ever recommend to anyone. It spoiled our holiday, completely. Every single word in this review is personal experience and the suffering and horror that we underwent.I could on and on, but is becoming too lengthy. STAY AWAY!!

Dear Guest, We do not have a "Mustafa" or "Man-Friday" at the reception. Your vivid imagination we presume as the rest of your letter clearly confirms. We have uniforms for every single member of the staff. Our staff does not "horse around" neither are they called "idiots" or "dumbos". You are lucky we are not suing you for your unacceptable and utterly unfortunate choice of words. We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen, hence we do not curse, use foul language, "scold" or belittle anyone. This however, seems to be your private and very sad specialty. We share your experience regarding your visit to our hotel, it was absolutely horrible, every moment of it, and we will make sure it never takes place again. We would be more than happy that if you kindly stayed away, sir, for the foreseeable future. Fulya Ulusoy General Manager

We met Gursoy upon arrival who was very knowledgeable, friendly and gave us great restaurant recommendations and pointed us in the right direction. The room’s views, no. 19, were incredible. The bed was very comfortable and the room was spacious. We enjoyed cocktails and dinner at the roof top restaurant where once again the service was impeccable and food delicious. Will definitely return.

Loved our stay in this hotel the rooms make you feel like you are in another century with super high ceilings and huge balconies but very modern services included. The bathroom and shower was amazing!! The service from the front desk was very informative and the location is in a very cute hip neighborhood with tons of coffee shops and boutiques while being a few minutes drive from all the tourist stuff. The restaurant has a beautiful view and delicious food but pretty pricey. The AirCon could be improved.

The location is super! Staff is great, the view from the rooftop restaurant - wow! The walls are thin, so it can be quite noisy in the morning and at night. Sanitary installations need to be replaced.

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your kind words and your criticism too, although we cannot agree with thin walls as this is an historical building with quite thick walls :) Nevertheless we are looking forward to welcoming you back with all our heart. Love from the entire Team, Fulya U. GM

Georges Hotel Galata is perhaps my favourite hotel in the world. My partner and I came with a group of friends for a wedding last year, and stayed at Georges for 3 nights upon arriving in Istanbul. Firstly, Galata was my favourite neighbourhood in the city. Highly recommend staying in the area, or at the very least coming for lunch and exploring! The hills and cobblestoned streets will give you a work out, but the vibe is unbeatable. Rooms are small as the boutique hotel is in an older building, however they are outfitted pristinely. Bedding is luxurious, as is bathroom. 5 stars. The rooftop bar/restaurant is a must visit, even if you do not stay here. The views over the Bosphorus are stunning, especially at sunset. Service at this hotel is phenomenal. I can't remember the name of our concierge (arghh!), but he was delightful and so above-and-beyond helpful. Make sure you sit at one of the tables out front and sip an espresso from the coffee bar. There are plenty of stray kittens to keep you company! We hope to return to Istanbul, and will definitely be staying at Georges.
