With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.

I stayed here for about three weeks in September, 2019. Firstly, I can assure readers that the place was well-run, clean, with pleasant, with helpful staff. They have an excellent breakfast laid out in a room with lovely views of the surrounding buildings and out across the water. However, the point I wish to make is about the staff. On my second day, I was a little careless and allowed myself to be mugged down near the Galata Bridge (drugged). I was now in a desperate situation with no passport, no phone and very little money. However, things slowly got better. But I needed to find many places: Police stations, the Australian Consulate, a hospital, Western Union, Banks, etc. and all of this with very little money. The three young men who took turns managing the hotel 24/7, were extrordinarily helpful. Advice, directions, guidance, companionship, and special care to see that I was ok. My bag with passport and phone were found and I managed to continue with my holiday. I have been left with pleasant memories of the people as well as of the sights. On my next visit to Istanbul, I will stay at Esans Hotel.

Hotel Esans is apparently an old perfume manufacturing property turned into a boutique hotel.Right from the beginning,we got immense help from the Manager Mr. Çetin, a host in the truest sense of the word. We walked into the hotel, dead exhausted. But he made sure that we got one big family room, full of a fresh citric smell. And then encouraged us to go out to the very close by Sultanahmet square. It is always bustling with life and activity and shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to walk to this place. In fact, most of the places, The Topkapi Palace, The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Basilica Cistern and Grand Bazar are pretty nearby. At most, it will take you 15 mins. On the other side, you will find the huge expanse of the Bosphorous strewn across. That too won't take you long. Overall, if you enjoy being in the heart of a bustling tourist spot without having to worry about getting transportation to the popular places, this is your best bet. But perhaps what is most amazing about this property is the spectacular view they offer from the terrace, which you can enjoy while devouring a lavish breakfast. May be,we will again visit Istanbul with the expectation to stay at Esans Hotel! Thank you Çetin.

We really enjoyed our stay at Esans Hotel. The room was comfortable, staff was helpful and pleasant, and the breakfast delicious with many healthy choices. The bed was comfortable and the room heater worked well during chilly winter conditions. Our laundry was done properly and in one day’s time. We used the driver service for our airport transfers and the directions were clear, the driver excellent and safe, and our pickups prompt. Room WiFi was very good speed using my tablet. Plugs were in good places to charge our devices. You are a very short walk from good restaurants, a small market for snacks or drinks, and the old city sites of Istanbul are an easy walk away. We always felt safe in the neighborhood when coming and going from our day’s activities. That said, if you are a large person or have any disability, there is no elevator and the shower in our room was quite compact. It was a fine size for me, but my partner found it tight quarters for his showers. You may need to take that into consideration. We stayed on the second floor, which was nice as it was two floors up from our room to the breakfast and then two floors from the entry to our room when coming back after a day exploring Istanbul. You have a short staircase from street level to lobby and a spiral stair up. My partner has had spinal surgery and cannot look down, so the staircase was a bit challenging for him. I loved the hotel and would stay here again, but my partner would probably want accommodation that is easier for him to negotiate. It’s the trade off of having a quaint, repurposed historical building—it’s lovely and welcoming but will not necessarily easily accommodate all travelers.
