We had 3 nights booked through last minute.com. The hotel supposedly 4 stars. We arrived late that night but our room was given to someone else! They offered us for that night only room on the ground floor behind the reception. All night we heard people talking, walking, doors etc.! Next morning they moved us to 3d floor- room was much smaller then it was advertised, but it was satisfactory. The problem was that next morning the cleaning staff changed the towels but didn’t change the bedding! It was tidy but not changed! Because we came back late at night and we were going next day afternoon, we didn’t make big issue out of it. But I would expect for 4 stars hotel change of bedding every day! The staff was friendly, especially the breakfast service staff. Karina was lovely lady, who spoke English and was very accommodating. For the first night fiasco we were promised complimentary free hamam service but it’s never materialised as the guy in the reception who said that was never seen afterwards!

All the hotels in this area are within walking distance of the main historic attractions, however, they all seem smaller than we expected.
Amber hotel is extremely clean, the bathrooms have been renovated, the breakfast hall has amazing views (and the food is quite nice!). All the staff were friendly, accommodating and discreet.
Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

We had a great stay. The breakfast was a local Trurkish flaver but they would cook your eggs anyway you want. The room was clean and some what roomy. Close to all big ticket to do's in Istanbul and close to the best eating area in the city. A big shout out to the staff and desk clerk who helped us out immensely with our last day and helped us with directions, metro and airport connections because we could not get a decent cab pick up or booking on the day for that I thank them as we arrived at the airport on time and with no fuss. I would thank them and wish all staff for a great and friendly stay. The Romano's

Hotel Amber is situated in Kumkapi near a streat with a lot of (fish)restaurants and in walking distance of the bazaars. The location was very good. The room was very clean (and was cleaned every day). The breakfast was on top of the hotel with a beautiful view on the sea of Marmara. The receptionist helped us with arranging the boottour and taxi.

Went from the 30th April to 6th May. Staff are lovely and knowledgeable, informing us of the historic sights to see. Hotel was very central to main routes especially the blue mosque, tram line and grand bazaar.

Will miss Istanbul, especially the hotel cat we made friends with who slept on our bed every single night. To whose that stay in room 207, please leave your windows open and look after her with plenty of cat treats and food.

This is by far a fraudulent advertisement of the hotel. The pictures are perhaps a decade old and the premises is disgusting. The staff who served us laughed and said oh well you have paid. I did not even have the energy to argue we left within 15 minutes. My only regret not taking pictures of the hotel. No refund or solution offered rather a threatening email response. Booking.com disgustingly played no role in supporting a regular customer or looked into this. This hotel had dusty rooms and old furniture far from 3 stars definitely a hostel with the lads not fit for family visits. The whole experience was awful. Please save your money and avoid this hotel. The location is 15 -20 minute walk from main area but amongst the back end which is very rough. Me and my pregnant wife booked this to find it was unsuitable we was given a coffin box room with dirty sheets despite an email request prior to attendance that my wife was pregnant. A solution another room was offered which was just as worse. If you have asthma this will kill you. Awful experience and appalling customer care. The mere fact hotel staff laughed in my face as I stated the pictures on the website do not reflect the hotel. The staff laughed and said “oh well you paid” we had to find alternative accommodation. Awful experience please be warned.
Do not take your family or loved ones. This would be ideal for lads holiday rough get a few bed bugs and dirty sheets and be greeted with abuse and treated like a animal.

I hold TripAdvisor responsible for ruining our experience in Istanbul because of this hotel! We totally trusted the load of positiveI reviews here, and paid no attention to the relatively small number of negative reviews! Not when the hotel has two certificates of excellence from TripAdvisor!!! The two certificates are hanging miserably behind the reception desk, witnessing, like the "Best Western" logo, the extents of fraud some can achieve!!
I'm writing this review a month and a half later since our stay there and I'm still very upset about it, the whole family is. And because I came back to a load of study and exams, I thought I'd wait till I'm done then seek to contact TripAdvisor directly to let them know how their name and service is being misused, but I couldn't find a direct contact e mail. So here, I hope they read this review!

Where shall I start?

Location: in a very narrow and noisy street, its only positive point is closeness to the main attractions in the old city. But because the street is very narrow it gets blocked easily, don't set your alarm if you need to get up early, angry drivers in the street will take care of you!

Hotel Building: not detached as the photoshopped picture might make you think. It's crammed between very old buildings, some deserted. You will probably notice the "Best Western" group logo. Maybe the hotel was an affiliate at some point, but sure not any more, though they still take advantage of the name!

Reception: very small and very narrow lobby, I know the photos suggest otherwise!
and no you will not be able to notice the stained beautiful glass on the doors, it almost exists only in the photos, I mean because the colors are enhanced in the photos. Photoshop makes wonders!

Rooms: small like everything else. Furniture is very old and worn out, so are the beddings and curtains. Almost everything is broken, from the toilet paper holder in the bathroom, to the useless safe inside the closet.

Bathroom: old, dirty, and you get worn out towels. Also hot water can be in short. Seems like the norm in this hotel since another reviewer experienced this too.

The terrace/restaurant: I know how the photos look, I showed them to my tearful big kids explaining that I was cheated, that I really thought I got them a decent place, it's the photos that made them forgive me because everyone can be fooled the way I was!

Breakfast: disgusting!! Very few options, cold and unappetizing!! The hot drinks machine produces warm brown and black stuff that taste nothing like coffee or chocolate!!

Did I mention how noisy the corridors were? Yes, the kling sound that announces the arrival of the elevator might wake you up if you are a light sleeper like myself. Let alone if there's someone coughing or talking in the very narrow corridors.

If you decide to go to this hotel anyway, or wherever you stay in Istanbul, I have a last piece of advice for you: if you want to get on a day guided tour, which is recommended, avoid purchasing tour tickets from the hotel, they will charge you at least double its price, e.g. 80 TL instead of 40 TL per person, in tour offices you buy what you want for the reasonable real cost, and cut the middle man/hotel.

I feel I need to emphasize that this hotel was our only bad experience in Istanbul, everything else was very beautiful, and definitely worth visiting. I loved the old city and its unique style, colors and smell.
Turkish people, the vast majority we met and dealt with were super friendly and nice.
Would love to go again, just will have to be more careful about hotel choice next time!

Response from Alihan A, Sahibi at Amber Hotel Istanbul
Responded Dec 19, 2017
We're deeply disappointed to hear about the experiences you faced during your time with us. At first I want to tell you that I have two hotels in Istanbul. One of them is still member of Best Western Hotel Cahin and it is in top 50 hotels in Istanbul on Tripadvisor. The Amber Hotel was one of the first Best Western Hotels in Istanbul / TURKEY and it was member of Best Western for about 20 years. In begining of the 2017 we decided to leave from Best Western for Amber Hotel. In 2016 and 2017 in Turkey there were many political and economic crisis and attacks. In Istanbul many hotels were closed or suspended their facilities. But we decided to continiue with same quality & standards. And now we are in top 80 hotels in Istanbul on Tripadvisor. Every year Tripadvisor send certificates to hotels and noboby get them without real reviews. And they are orginal certificates which you saw on behind the reception desk. -Location : In Istanbul there are two main places. One of them is Sultanahmet Area ( Oldcity-historical) which we are located. In our area most of the building are historical and you can not change buildings. Our building was one of the olsed building and it was orginal bank building. With your pictures we understood that you stayed in 205 and it is one of our family rooms. In opposite of Amber Hotel there was a hotel and last year there was a fire in that hotel so we can not do anyting this view. We applied to every officer department in Istanbul to cover this building. -Noisy : As we can understand you did not complaint anything during your stay. If our guests want to change their rooms they can notify reception and they can change their rooms. But you did not request anything. -Logo : We do not use any Best Western Logo in or in front of our hotel. Also The Best Western does not accept to use their logo. It is unlawful to use their any logos and it has big penalty. When we left from Bes Western Hotel chain, we and Best Western office informed to all of our partners. -Rooms : When you check in our front office gives informations about hotel and Istanbul. And also our bellboy shows everthing in the room what you want. If you would like to use safe in the room at first you should ask to reception or bellboy and they will tell you how you can use. We are in this field because we love dealing with people from all over the world. The employees at our hotel have all been here no less than 10 years with more than half of us here over 15 years. We are a family and we treat our guest as family. Photos: During your stay you could show differences between images & what you see. - You took your room pictures after one day you check in. - You took safe-box picture, we do not understand what you want to mean? - You took Windows picture, what was wrong. - You took another hotel’spicture opposite us which was fired last year. We can not do anything for it. We still waiting their renevotion. - You took a hall pictures, which one our second exit for laundry, our staff and management. I think you should take thin picture in day, not night. There are just some things we can't control and we do the best we can but no matter what...... it's impossible to please everybody. Tours & Tour Guides : In reception you can find the brochures about tours, restaurants, cities, attractions, Turkis Baths and etc…All of them have been selected carefully and have certificate from Ministry of Tourism Turkey. All tours with professional tour guide, licensed by the Ministry of Tourism. There are lots of illegal tour guides in streets with no license and insurance. They are working only with commissions from your shopping.Maybe you liked them. But we can not recommend them. We take all the complaints very seriously and constantly work on improvements. We, at Amber Hotel Istanbul, constantly strive to achieve high standards of service and regret that we failed to meet your expectations. There may have been a mix up in communication and ability to contact you. Please provide an email address so that a member of our team may contact you. Regards

I had booked a 4-night stay at the Best Western Amber Hotel (no longer affiliated with Best Western as of Sep 2016), but checked out after 2 nights because of the terrible conditions. By NO MEANS is this a 4-star quality hotel. Please read this review in detail before considering booking it.

1. LOCATION: Awful. Run-down, congested, tiny street that for some would definitely taint their experience of Istanbul, particularly when there are plenty of other hotels for similar prices in good locations to choose from.

2. IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE PHOTOS: Don't expect it to. The photos are VERY photoshopped.

3. REVIEWS: Please pay attention to the quality of reviews, not just the quantity. I wish I'd done so. Most of the reviews that say 'poor' or 'terrible' have been left by seasoned travellers who have frequented various hotels and left a number of reviews, as opposed to the majority of reviews that say 'excellent', which have been left by people who have only left 1 or 2 reviews in total.

4. ROOMS: I found clumps of hair everywhere - in the shower, on the toilet, all over the bed, and a thick clump of hair when I opened up the towel. The toilet was dirty. The water boiler still had remnants from the last guest, the tissue box hadn't been replaced, the toilet paper was three-fourths over and hadn't been replaced. I didn't bother showering, and immediately checked out when I discovered the mass of hair in the towel. It was the last straw. The hotel smells musty and it very poorly maintained.

5. POOR BREAKFAST: I can tell from experience that there are hotels that provide good, clean and diverse breakfast. The Amber Hotel has stale, cheap cereal probably bought from the nearby supermarket, greasy cakes, runny eggs and the like. ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTING,INEDIBLE BREAKFAST! I didn't return for breakfast the next morning.

When I went to the reception to check out early, I requested the receptionist to give me a receipt saying I was checking out on the 24th. He immediately refused. Not only this, he was rude and suggested I was checking out to check into another hotel with my "boyfriend". Is this any way to speak to a customer? First, I was travelling alone. Second, instead of apologising for the state of the hotel, he was actually disrespectful towards me.

Utterly disgusted with this hotel. I spoke to the manager who offered to shift me to another Best Western but I refused and booked another hotel for myself. My advice? Save your time and money and book a different hotel.
