Ellen's Place was named after Ellen Senanayake - the youngest child of Mudaliyar Don Charles Gemoris Attygalle and his wife Peternella Abeykoon. Ellen Senanayake contributed much to Ceylon's independence struggle, being the supportive wife of F. R. Senanayake, one of the post independence national heroes who propelled the Independence movement. Ellen Senanayake, who at one point owned all the houses and land down Shady Grove Avenue in Colombo 8, built a house for her personal physician who was expected to live there and treat her and other members of her family. Years later, the house was inherited by her great grandson Hon. Vasantha Senanayake, a young and dynamic parliamentarian who decided to convert the beautiful house to a modern boutique hotel, yet retaining some features of its original decor. He decided to name the property "Ellen's Place" in memory of his great grandmother, an ardent Buddhist, generous Philanthropist, astute businesswoman and a devoted mother to her six children.

Wow, this place was such a great deal! The room was really lovely with everything we wanted. The front office executive (A Sudharshan) in charge of the place was amazing too. He was always there from the morning to the evening and happy to answer any questions we had. He always had good suggestions and even helped us with booking an Uber and other related things. He spoke very good English. I can't recommend them highly enough.

We stayed in the very clean deluxe double room for four nights and our 4th and final accommodation of a lovely long holiday. The room is magnificent, very high ceiling, lovely comfy super king four poster bed, sofa area and very large bathroom, even with bath jacuzzi which was all show and not much performance. The bedroom had two aircon units because the room is so big and the first time in weeks I slept without a direct draft. The bed was very comfy and having a kettle for hot drinks was lovely. The fashion feature was the shower being open to the elements, making the bathroom a different temperature to the bedroom. This also didn’t help with insect like Cockroaches visiting, not what you want to meet for that midnight pee!! We had no problem with mosquitoes in the room which was a plus. Breakfast was ok, only two set choices, not all of us eat that much! We had better breakfasts elsewhere for half the price. Staff where very nice, youngest being very shy. We received a restaurant suggestion which was great. The pool was cool and great for those hot city feet, it’s not a swimming pool. We where very surprised that most Tuk Tuk driver don’t know there way round their own city! This place is beside the biggest cemetery and we have to work out directions! Here to the Fort 280rs.

Ellen’s Place was a perfect lovely refuge away from the hustle and bustle of Colombo. The staff was happy to help arrange for airport transfer and they were prompt to respond to all questions asked before our arrival. The hotel was clean and the room was spacious. The amenities were abundant and the room even had a mini fridge to keep our perishable items cool. I would highly recommend Ellen’s Place!
