Governor, Hand-written Deed and Peppercorn The year was 1892 and what was known as "Ceylon" was under British rule. Governor Havelock transferred the title to the land (on which the bungalows are built), by a hand-written deed to the Havelock Building Company on the payment of Rs. 1307/- and a Peppercorn. The present owners purchased the properties in the mid 1980's and lived there. The Havelock Place Bungalow was first opened to guests in December 1999. In the city, yet miles away... If you've ever visited the Bungalow, you would have noticed how discreet we have been about our presence. To the casual passer-by, the Bungalow appears to be nothing more than an old colonial home. Only a plaque with the name 'Havelock Place Bungalow' engraved on it, indicates that we are open to guests. No wonder the Bungalow continues to be Colombo's best kept secret! We are conveniently located so if you are in the mood for a visit to the Museum, Independence Square, or Temples, or would like to go on a shopping spree, you can get to your destination in a matter of minutes. It's a jungle. But definitely not the concrete type... When you enter our gates and walk along the paved pathways, you realize you are in an oasis, away from the bustle of the city. Trees are an intrinsic part of the Havelock Place Bungalow experience. You can enjoy your breakfast while watching our garden come alive with a variety of birds and butterflies, or relax on a bench and gaze at the stars as night approaches. The surrounding foliage lends a quiet charm to every part of the Bungalow. Welcome to the Bungalow!

We decided to stay at this place as it was reccomended by a person who travelled a lot. It rained at that night unfortunately and we noticed raindrops leaking through the ceiling to the mattress. Since we didn't wanted to trouble anyone we first moved the bed aside, but as rain got heavier it started leaking from more places. Then we informed the staff and they opened a another room for us which was not fitting for us. In the morning, when we go back to our original room we found all our baggages are wet. Only thenwe notoced the walls were stained too. It was not repaired for months. I really wish that they repair the room and maintain it properly hereafter.

We stayed at this hotel for the first two nights and returned for the final night of our two-week holiday in Sri Lanka. It's a lovely little colonial style house-hotel with a cooling swimming pool and a lovely shaded garden restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Service was excellent and the location was quiet and relaxing. Very nice.

A gem of a hotel tucked away aff a main street but with the ambience of a country hotel, the Havelock Place Bungalow is a special place. Spacious rooms have been renovated with an eye for authenticity and comfort. The family rooms are truly delightful and open onto garden vistas. A minute swimming pool with a jacuzzi helps to combat the oppressive heat of Colombo. A friendly staff, a limited but interesting menu in the in-house restaurent and a great location makes this an easy choice.

I was hugely disappointed by Havelock Bungalow. The previous owners have left and standards have left with them. I've recommended this place for 20 years but either I was staggeringly unlucky (the 5-star reviews make it sound like a different place) or it has crossed the line from inviting old-style colonial to a shabby property in desperate need of love and attention. What was once an attractive resident's lounge now doubles up as an office and so is essentially unusable. The first room I was offered was the one-time garage with minimal furniture; the second was slightly better but the outside sit-out was dirty with rusting chairs. The garden restaurant is its saving grace and can be recommended. But please invest in this once glorious property and arrest its decline, or abandon your lease and leave it to somebody who will.

It’s hard to believe that you can walk a few yards from a major Colombo road and be cosseted in this secret, garden hotel. It feels like stepping back 100 years it is so unspoilt. Only air conditioning has been added and the gardens and pool are so well integrated with the building that simply sitting anywhere is a pleasure. The staff are wonderfully enthusiastic and the food outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the olive oil and pepper ice creams and the arrack cocktails. We really enjoyed our stay here.
